This is a cover of a song by Jamaican performer Jimmy Cliff. The crowd recognized it because Bruce has included it in his set fairly regularly since the 80s

Bruce's version is definitely his own though. It's one of the few covers he's released.

I remember watching Letterman and the guest was Jimmy Cliff. He started singing and the song lyrics were familiar, then it hit me at the refrain. I was stunned to learn it was originally a raggae song. Bruce rearranged it and turned it into a Springsteen song.

I'm so glad to experience "Trapped" played again last year on their 2nd night concert in Barcelona. Although knowing it is a cover song only, it is what Bruce has made out of it. It's special, not comparable with the original, it became over the time Bruce's song and it will be always highest appreciated by the crowd. You will always see a jump of joy in the audience when Max starts with the distinctive intro.

David, I’ve been enjoying you reactions for a long time now, and especially your expertise in music and live performance. I am also aware that you really don’t take lyrics into account. However, in this reaction you nailed it anyway. In the verses, the tension builds and builds with the lyrics and then comes to an emotional release with the chorus. I have seen Bruce play this live many times, usually in darkness. All though he doesn’t have much “production” he definitely uses lighting to great effect and live, the lighting on this song really enhances the emotion. It’s hard to appreciate that on video and this was performed in daylight. I really hope that he plays this song when you and your wife see him live as I believe it will add to your feelings about the song. Keep doing your great reviews and enjoy the show!

This is one of his most popular covers. He released it on the USA for Africa album in the 80s (We Are the World album.) The release got a lot of radio airplay when BitUSA was at its peak.

The female vocalist is his Soozie Tyrell who usually plays violin, but some acoustic guitar. Usually that's where Patti is.

The way the story goes Clarence pickec Bruce. He heard about him, found them playing and asked to join the band on stage. Probably all true.

Trial of 1 - but I think I'll be a fan of this scoring - Your reviews always give me some insight into maybe why I like some songs over others - have never really appreciated how chord progressions and dynamics can really affect the feel - but I guess it makes sense - Morgan Freeman could read a phone book and make it interesting - My uncle Lenny reading Shakespeare is a travesty I think this song really shows the power of ESB - A slow tempo- but a physical sound And it helps that "Mail it in" is just not in their DNA

I'm here for the "new" scoring, and I like it. But I have not heard you say 3 stars. 😉

The original version by Jimmy Cliff sounds NOTHING like this. Give it a listen for comparison. Bruce Makes all songs he covers uniquely his own.

I managed to hear Trapped live in Munich last year! It was only my second gig! The highlight of the gig for me definitely! I could not have believed he pulled out that.
