This song never fails to bring me to tears. It brings to my mind and heart my first love, who perished from AIDS in 1991. He and I had parted ways 10 years before he died, but he never married, nor had anyone in his life, so my husband and I cared for him for the 8 months he lived after being diagnosed with AIDS. My husband is a magnificent, caring, compassionate man to have accepted this responsibility, and I am forever grateful to and for him. ❤

The best part about this video is the live singing. For those who didn't know, Bruce actually is singing live while walking here. There is a microphone connected under the jacket he is wearing. You can hear the background noises such as his footsteps and kids playing. Just adds that extra charm to this song.

My youngest sister passed away last week after a long and punishing battle with cancer. Today is her funeral. She loved Bruce Springsteen, and among her favorites was this song. I was listening to a music channel when it came on, and I realized the song was now about her. I hated seeing her waste away, even as she put on a brave face. She endured so much pain and uncertainty, it's a hard way to live or die. I can't go to the funeral but I am grateful that I was able to spend significant time with her this summer and fall. At the end we took shifts so that there was always someone with her, to hold her hand and let her know that she was safe and loved as she slowly but inexorably was pulled away from us. I'll carry you in my heart forever, Herm. I miss you. God speed. j

Homeless now, sleeping in my car, was military for 13 years and was diagnosed with a heart arrythmia issue that side lined. Just had surgery the other day on my heart and I'm in my car recovering, seen another homeless guy and I didn't have much myself and I gave him my water and he cried and it hit me, especially the part in this song that no angel is goin to great me, it's just you and me my friend..... God bless and merry Christmas! Update: I am in a apartment, car broke down last month but still walk to work, I still owe on that care because I had not great credit when I got it from the bills I defaulted on because I had to miss work over the heart stuff, but I have since filed bankruptcy, got a apartment, rebuilding credit and knock on wood my heart is holding up now! I had to have an Ablation procedure done and some other things but I’m holding up. Tryin to pay off this car to get a newer car and have one I’m paying on that I can drive. I appreciate the love and support! Not all homeless are fake nor do they ask for help, just remember that. We’re just like you but something happened to side line us, try and remember that.

Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, And though they are with you yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not your thoughts, For they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday. - Kahlil Gibran - On Children

This song makes me cry because I was homeless and many times wanted to give up because it definitely felt like no matter how hard I tried I could never better my situation. All the people I thought were my friends and that I helped over many years all turned their heads like they didn’t know me and I saw their true selves which to me was sad because I knew if they were in my situation I would try to help in anyway I could no matter what. It wasn’t really my fault for being homeless I had lost job and then everything went down hill. I lost all my belongings down to what I could carry. I feel bad for those out there going through it and I pray for them everyday. Even while I was homeless I helped a pregnant girl that was homeless with her boyfriend who were fighting over $20 that he wanted to buy liquor and she just wanted food so I got her some food with my food stamps to take back to their tent. Just see her smile was the best thank you. If people would understand that those who are homeless aren’t always there because of drugs or doing bad stuff, sometimes things just go bad for them like it did me. I’m glad after 3 yrs of being on the streets I finally got into my own home and did it all on my own. I lost a lot of things that I can’t replace but I’ve been able to replace what I could. But I’m glad I never gave up and I promised myself never to walk that road again no matter what. If we would all just give a helping hand to someone in need you would be surprised the simplest thing makes a big difference and helps in the biggest way. God bless and I pray all those stay warm during these winter months and pray our government would start to see the we need to solve our own problems before we keep sending all this help and money to these other countries when we have children and adults worried about their next meal and a safe place to lay their head at night. That’s not what God wanted for us!!! Open your hearts!!!

I'm definitely listening to this evocative and deeply emotional special song from the amazing Bruce Springsteen. In many ways the music and lyrics mirror my own life with no family left alive, my beloved husband unexpectedly and tragically passed away in 2021, and I am battling pancreatic cancer and other complications all alone. So I find this song strangely speaking to me.

My wife put on a play at kids school where Bruce attended as a kid and we had no money for some equipment to put on production. Wife wrote a letter to the Boss after surviving cancer and this play was something she put off but put off no longer(those with cancer will understand). Lovely letter from Bruce and family with a check for the soundsystem to support the production for the students. MORE OF A LEGEND THAN EVER to our family. Forever grateful Boss and forever Freehold Proud.

Springsteen has so often made his music showing the working classes, the downtrodden, those lost or ignored. So many beautiful songs he's done about the struggle of life. But here, walking the streets of Philadelphia, did you notice how many people were sad? Or how many people kept on living, making the best of each moment? I'm sure they had to get all sorts of releases to include these people in the video, but it feels like witnessing how good living can be as we get reminded of how hard it can be to live.

@J F exactly. "Nobody exists on purpose, nobody belongs anywhere, everyone is going to die. Come watch TV?" Which I've always took to mean, spend the time with the people you love, because that time, those people, and all that love - that's all that matters

Well I did not know that, and that's what they say in Wikipedia. I never noticed the difference with the CD recording + I was wondering where they hid the microphone and on what device they could record it with a quality sound. "The vocal track for the video was recorded live during the shooting, using a hidden microphone, to a prerecorded instrumental track. This was a technique, appropriate for emotionally intense songs for which conventional video lip-syncing would seem especially false, that John Mellencamp pioneered in his 1985 "Rain on the Scarecrow" video, and that Springsteen himself had used on his 1987 "Brilliant Disguise" video. Springsteen would also go on to use the same technique in his "Lonesome Day" video in 2002."

Hello Garry, I hope the you will not be upset when I say that I'm not a gay man with AIDS. Bruce's song The Streets Of Philadelphia is about what a man with AIDS can go through but the lyrics apply to many of us in so many other ways also. So, for example, when I identify with the lyrics "I was bruised and battered" I was indeed till very recently bruised and battered since November of 1971 but not because I have AIDS but because I suffered with anxiety and depression and much more else besides that I will not describe in this public space. I am a great fan of Springsteen but I did not go to his recent concert here in Dublin over two nights. I hope you see this post because KZbin doesn't always work as it should for me. All the best, Peter Nolan. Dublin. Ireland.

Thanks for that Peter, and no I am not upset at all, I am a humanist and the song "works" for people on many levels. Although I have not suffered the "black dog" of depression or anxiety I am acutely aware the toll it takes on individuals and their families. I hope everything is well with you now and you are able to enjoy a fulfilled life on this beautiful planet we all live on. Just as an aside I am gigging with my band tonight so we will do a cover of this song and I will be thinking of you and yours, again thanks for posting.

I remember when this song came out. Its impact remains the same. The lives of those we deem irredeemable must be excruciatingly lonely and hard to live. This song conveys it well. May we build better societies across the globe without tearing each other apart. May we care for those who have been left behind without being hateful towards those who seem to have it all.

He is singing live in this video. The music was fed into his ear via a hidden earpiece and he sang live as the camera and mic followed him. This got me thinking about how many music videos out there exist where the artist was recorded singing live like this? I can't think of a single one. This is likely an extreme rarity.

@@busybee6889 it does sound live though, when he has subtle turns to the side you can hear the muffle from the mic and his breathing. If you're right though, then this is a damn good gimmick.

Angels so do exist and I could not do without them. The were there when I was ready to let go, when I touched the lowest of bottom to find strength I had no idea exists. Facing life threatening illness is a blessing in disguise finding a new light in you, discovering love you have amongst family & friends. It is powerful and humbling experience I would not want to repeat but neither would want to change. It changed me and I'm ever thankful for that. I am healthy though, powerful and strong 🤍

The existence of the human being may be surrounded by challenges, by evil, by the overwhelming power of reality over our experience . But the beauty that is reachable by our existence, by the good, not money or the material, by the real good stuff, the stuff that will fill you with grace, the stuff that will dignify you, like love, that is way bigger than ourselves.
