I think Ian has given the best ever review of this game that I've seen on. Every other person I've seen review this game simply says it sucks because it "religious" and that's all they base it on, but Ian actually hits on points like gameplay and entertainment value.

I remember when PC Gamer did an article on this. They described it as, "Remember that game Rod and Tod Flanders on The Simpsons played? ("No, you just winged him and made him a Unitarian!") This is that game."

You know, this game would be amazing if 1) the swords were used for melee (and each had a different special ability) 2) it had rpg elements (dialogue trees, dynamic characters, side quests, skill tree, etc.) 3) a more in depth story line and subplots (maybe on the side collecting scrolls which lead up to finding more information about something crucial to the endgame). Character moral development and the impact of their choices would've also been a great addition. 4) it wasnt so damn fast - some of the demons move like light. 5) level design was improved and challenging puzzles were integrated, as well as setting atmosphere and emotion to levels. for example, in the area where you go before you fight satan, there should be music that gives you the feeling of depression and that all hope is lost. 6) it took itself more seriously and mature. by this, I mean the dialogue was super cheesy and violence is pretty much non existent. if catechumen was aimed to a more mature audience and integrated in violence (i mean, just read the bible; violence is glorified) then the game would most likely have been a hit game. Christian games have so much potential and nobody has accomplished it yet.

oh my God, when I was little I played this game a lot. it seems almost like a dream now because I wasn't sure if it actually existed or not due to the fact that no one I knew acknowledged its existence. I was like four at the time and the first time those rolling demons came after me , I almost shit myself and quit the game on the spot. good game though especially when you don't have a whole lot of access to games as a kid.

I'm a Christian and I can tell you 100% Christian Media sucks, how hard is it to get a group of talented Christian developers I'm sure they exist and gather them all together to make a good game? Also in the realm of movies and TV it also sucks oh, the only two good Christian shows were McGee and me and Veggie Tales which of course that's screwed up when DreamWorks took over the project. But if I had a computer I definitely buy catechumen because it looks fun. Wow a Christian game that I was actually fun who knew!?

I'm a Christian in my senior year for a Gaming Arts major, I hope I can make you proud! I think a big part of the challenge is making Christian themes "digestible" for people while not dumbing down the message. C.S. Lewis always did a great job of that.

0:38 As far as I can tell, this is why the Chronicles of Narnia seems to be the only piece of christian media to be popular with non-christians. It's tricky for sure, you want to make Christian media entertaining and "digestible" for everyone, but you also don't want to dumb down or "hide" the Christian themes. C.S. Lewis kinda set a standard in how to do it right.

Pretty sure this game was parodied to hell and back in all forms of media where you ran around zapping people with a weapon to convert them into goodly christian stereotypes. Any game dealing with religion can only be done from an outsider perspective potentially critical of religion. Otherwise it comes off as literally someone screaming "WE HAVE THE TRUTH YOU FUCKING TWAT!" and shooting you with a magic sword that "converts" you to their way of thinking against your will. Honestly this game is insidious.
