The Idaho murder victims' surviving female roommate likely didn't call for help after coming face-to-face with accused killer Bryan Kohberger because she may have been paralyzed by fear and confusion, experts told Fox News Digital.
The roommate - one of two who survived the attack - faced swift backslash after it was revealed in an affidavit, that she awoke Nov. 13 and looked directly at the alleged murderer as he fled, then locked herself in her bedroom.
"When a person goes through trauma, they are going to experience fight, flight or freeze," said Dr. Katherine Kuhlman, a police and public safety psychologist based in Arizona. "Most people in their entire lives won't have to deal with this type of trauma and won't mentally prepare for it."

Yes and if she was worried about making a mountain out of a mole hill why didn't she text the victims themselves? She would've had all the vics phone nums , all she could've text was" are yous ok" who was that bloke" i think she was just used to living in a busy party house.

My understanding is the roomie opened her door and saw a black clad person with a mask on skulking in the hallway. I don't recall roomie saying she actually saw him coming out of a room. And how could roomie see a person coming out of a bedroom on the second or third floor when roomies bedroom is on the first floor which is the floor below the incident??

Even if she didn't have her cell phone handy and locked herself in the room. Couldn't she still have shouted out that she phoned the police and there on the way. He wasn't to know if she had her phone or not. He might have panicked and left so it would have giving her time to try and help the victims. Or get neighbours up to phone the police. Strange how she didn't do a thing to check her friends. I can't figure out how someone would target a party house to kill people knowing theres people coming and going all the time.🤔 .

It does not make sense. Why did Dylan open her door 3x as if she finds something strange or suspicious? Keep in mind they’re not roomies but best of friends. So why didn’t she check on them, call them or even call the cops. It was early morning 3-4 am lights out…clearly it wasn’t a party and she sees a man wearing all black and a mask! Come on now!

I once swore I was witnessing a crime where I froze in place in fear of being seen by the perpetrator. Once I was sure I was safe, and the threat was gone, I rushed out of there and texted my friend to confirm if I should call the cops on it. In my case, it was a huge misunderstanding. There was no crime, just someone acting extremely shady and me and my friend were able to confirm that without me calling the cops. I can totally imagine DM texting her friend to tell them what she saw and ask if she should call the cops on it. In her case, it was a huge mistake not to. Seems to me like anonymous people in and out of the house is so commonplace that she or her friend could've talked themselves down from calling the cops. Outside of this, she is not under suspicion by law enforcement.

You don’t check the hallway 3 times concerned, hear the crying of your roommate with male voice attempting to soothe them, and some random dude leaving your house without checking in with your friends physically, sending them a text or call. Oh and maybe do some research on the mind while in a state of shock during a traumatic event before publicly tearing this girl apart. Oh wait, that's too much work for you to do. You would rather come to a sm platform with thousands of people reading your comment to say this young lady was wrong for the way she did or didn't do. It's not like she is going through enough about her decisions so you got to keep digging the knife into her. I'm so tired of people sitting on the sidelines judging what others do. Odd, that would be the first and only time in the history of the world that someone is "too shocked" to call anyone and yet also manages to fall asleep. And remembers everything, so obviously wasn't that intoxicated. They are assuming that no one else has ever been in shock when coming across a crime scene? Er, they are. But they still call. I've listened to hundreds of first responder witness calls (family massacres, Travis Alexanders roommates etc) funny how they managed to call.

On the other it might just be a dude in all black,using the sliding door hanging out with my roomates. Which one? I wonder if when BK was arrested, and he asked if anyone else had been, if he wasn't talking about her. Her reaction doesn't make sense. She didn't need to rush to call the police,she could have tried any of the 3 roomates. Fishy. She could of been buying her killer boyfriend some time. Someone made a very good point in comments on another channel....so, from 4:30-11:58 DM didn't have to use the bathroom? I found that very interesting. Everyone in that house was drinking that night. The bathroom was next to Xanas room. What female do you know isn't going to use the bathroom for 8 hours after consuming alcohol? Doesn't add up. The more you think about it, the more it makes no sense. You hear whimpering or crying but you don't check to see if your friend is OK? Why did she lock herself in and why would she be traumatized/froze if she didn’t perceive extreme danger? Why didn’t she call 911 or campus security? Why didn’t she text/call to check up on her roommates to make sure they were ok? Also very important to remember that what we know about her behavior that night is her own side of the story which could be coached by her lawyer or modified to protect herself. The major question on any rational mind is was her behaviors in an attempt to protect or hide something.

well its all speculation until her side is told and the truth is unveiled but in my opinion its very likely she just didnt put two and two together that the crying represented someone dying rather someone scared. these are all young college students who were pretty close and dont seem to have violence or crime any where near their reality. who knows what went through her mind. girls love the serial killer shows so she possibly thought she was only safe locked in her room and as to why she didnt call till later id speculate in the waiting for something to happen she dozed off and woke up a few hours later realizing it was eerily quiet and discovered her friends barricaded in the room and unresponsive and called friends over to help her not realizing how serious the situation was. one death let alone 4 people you live with is no where near anyones mind. they all had locks on their door. you just have to wait till all the information is available. for example we still dont know where exactly the bodies laid at and where the initial attacks accorded or really much of any of the information regarding what transpired between the victims and the perpetrator. dont draw presumptuous conclusions. please put yourself in her position and think innocent until proven guilty. give them the benefit of the doubt and let the state prove one way or the other. rumors dont help no one especially someone who just had 4 friends die by the hand of a man she saw leave from killing her friends and she for whatever reason wasnt able to call or come to the decision police were needed. that must be very hard to speculate whether or not the deciding factor of her friends lives was if she called police in time. if any of them could of lived shes gonna be suicidal from survivors guilt and needs support not rumors.

I feel for DM and the ordeal she has encountered but not calling 911 after all the things she heard and saw is absolutely bizarre. I understand it was a party house but that night it wasn't. D herself said in the affidavit that she saw the victims come home and there was no mention of anyone else being with them. That would eliminate the theory there was perhaps a friend over that D didn't know about strolling around at 4am. D heard K playing with her dog upstairs mere minutes before the murders, she would have heard if they'd invited anyone else over. I must say that I dont think she's involved at all but I can't seem to comprehend why she didn't contact anyone for 8 hours and then when she finally did contact someone it wasn't even 911 it was a friend... And before anyone says 'she probably thought it was just a friend cause it's a party house' the affidavit itself describes D frozen in fear. She was frozen in fear and had looked out of her room numerous times indicating she thought something was up. Then AFTER looking out of her room 3 times and hearing something she described as 'crying' she see's a stranger she didn't recognise, with a mask on, dressed in all black and doesn't think these things put together is suspicious enough to contact someone? Again, before anyone brings up the fact she my have been intoxicated, she was perfectly able to hear things coherently from other bedrooms AND give a detailed description of the stranger she saw, she may have been drunk but that doesn't seem to be the actions of someone belligerently drunk. She literally saw him leaving out of the sliding glass door, she knew he was no longer inside, that would have been the PERFECT time to call for help.

We know now what happened, but she could’ve though her friends (who were all awake) invited someone strange over after a night of drinking, plus hoodie guy was supposed to come home with them, maybe she thought it was him? I would imagine seeing a masked stranger clad in all black would be quite a shock for many people. And maybe she wasn't exactly sure what to make of the situation. Apparently this was a party house with people filing in and out all the time, esp since it was a weekend. Maybe she thought this was one the roommate's friends pulling a prank or something. Ethan was a fratboy, so the stranger could have been one of his brothers messing around, she could have thought. Remember at the time she saw the killer, she apparently didn't know he had just killed her friends. She heard crying, but crying doesn't necessarily mean someone is being murdered. So maybe she did think that was weird, but figured it was none of her business or shrugged it off as one of those weird happenings common in party houses like theirs. She then went to sleep and didn't wake up for several hours. This could also explain why she called friends first instead of police. Because she didn't know a quadruple murder had taken place. Think about it from her perspective, if the guy was a murderer, why didn't he kill her when he saw her and walked pass her? She was afterall a direct witness. Usually murderers are keen to not leave witnesses behind. So maybe that led to her thinking this was just some odd prank and so she called her friends over to talk about the weirdness of it all. The friends come over, they talk about it then go try to wake up the others to find out what the heck happened ... and that's when they realise the magnitude of the situation and called 911.

I'm sick of all these comments saying, "You don't know how someone would act in that situation" I know that in traumatic situations victims have a hard time remembering details because the brain blocks everything out for survival instincts. If she had any reason what-so-ever to keep a mental note about something strange at 4 a.m. Even just one. Let alone multiple reasons. She should have called police or very least texted her roommates. She had trauma enough to blank out or 'freeze' for 8hrs not calling police, but still remembers so much detail and called friends first? It just don't make sense. I've went through a break-in while being home and it is very very scary. It was absolutely traumatizing. With that being said. I don't believe the roommate's story. Hello, just some thought to share. Take it or leave it lol. For one, most of that is not technically the "roommates stories." Some is news media and YT mostly speculating. No one has truly understood this whole "unconscious person" call. Also "masked intruder" ? You mean a dude with a rona mask? The affidavit says the mask was "covering his mouth and nose" and THAT ISNT SO ODD now a days. Esp in a house that has so many people in and out, that we got to see it first hand. A police bodycam of noise complaints of parties where the people who lived there weren't even there! That's how "open door" that place appears to have been. The house dynamic matters here is what I'm trying to say... Frat houses have late night booty calls, all kinds of stuff. Maybe him walking by wasn't so weird. Maybe the only reason why she was scared was bc she had not expected some rando dude to be walking towards her at that time. I think that some ppl are taking the wording in the affidavit far too literal. Just my opinion, and I hope you don't think I'm coming at you I'm just sayin we don't know a lot. Hindsight is 20/20 now that we know she SHOULD HAVE called for help. But think about it, how many ppl would have said "gee I should go make sure my roomies weren't knifed down." Not many people would truly consider that. Esp if they were drunk or high like some are while in college....

I think the police haven’t revealed much because they didn’t want to tip the killer off that Dylan actually saw him In order to protect her. She also didn’t realize that her 4 roommates just got stabbed to death so she wasn’t acting with that knowledge . She also could have thought that this guy isn’t too dangerous since he walked past her and didn’t harm her or even if she thought he was a threat, she saw him leave the house and thought they were okay now. I could be wrong but... I was a college kid once with roomates. We mind out own business when in our rooms like we're in an apartment. This house was known as a party house, so people coming in and out wasn't uncommon. Roommate heard some random crying (maybe she thought he broke up with said roomie or she was just upset) sees random dude leaving with black clothing, mask over his nose and mouth, could see his bushy eyebrows not being aggressive or trying to escape out of a window or anything. Sounds to me he was trying to leave like he was visiting someone secretly and didn't want to be seen. Roommate sees him leave (it's cold out, snowing there) closes her door and thinks whatever. The next day she hasn't heard a peep out of the roomies, it's noon, someone should have at least made a noise. Goes to check rooms- bam. This is just my observation of why she didn't call right away. It's perfectly normal to lose conciousness in a state like that and I'm speaking from experience here (fortunately, not half as bad, but I can somewhat relate). Under a lot of stress, at night, when you make yourself relatively safe (in her case: by locking herself up in her room), it's common to just fall asleep. Our brains are working very hard to protect us from trauma and it's very possible that hers simply convinced her that it was only a bad dream. The amount of hours that passed was consistent with sleep, the house wasn't cleaned or anything. Only when confronted with the aftermath, the details came to her again, because the nightmare turned real. That would be my theory. She's a victim as well from what we know. At least try to be more understanding or voicing your doubts in a less attacking manner, this should come even before your prayers. Let's not make their trauma worse, I'm sure the lawyers and other specialists will check out her statements and her with a magnifying glass.

What I don't understand is why nobody is questioning: If the roommate saw him holding a knife or anything else? Did he have any blood on him? How do we know if the roommate was traumatized when we only are told she saw him walking out? Did she see the dead body? Did she see him killing in action? What did she know? These are very important questions to ask, so that we could figure out if the roommate was aware of urgency to contact police. Maybe it was even possible to save some of the victims if she called police immediately. Maybe police could have caught the guy on the same day if she contacted them immediately. Is media so stupid or do they think their viewers are so stupid? Pisses me off.

I've read a lot of comments here and in my personal opinion, there are 3 conclusions to this story: 1) The roommate called her friends 8 hours after the murder and the incident got reported as an unconscious person upstairs in the house to completely throw the police off of the trail from having any thoughts that this roommate was involved. She wanted to portray herself in a light where she "doesn't know anything and is completely oblivious as to what happened that night". Also, waiting 7-8 hours gives plenty of time for the murderer to act according to plan, get rid of the evidence and build out his alibi. 2) The roommate is some weak-minded little girl that decided to chill in her room after she went into a panic mode from what she heard and saw in the house and therefore decided to wait 8 hours just to chill out and then call her friends rather than the police to check if everyone in the house was okay. 3) The roommate was afraid to call the police due to having drugs and alcohol in the house and she was too young to be drinking. She was afraid to go to jail, so she waited for 8 hours until the alcohol was out of her system. My vote is that scenario #1 is most logical. What are your thoughts?

Two question I have is if the roommate heard crying a thud a makes voice then a man masked that scared her why didn’t she call her roommates and no answer call the police. They said she froze in fear. The second question is if she was in fear why did she not only wait that long but tell 911 there was a unconscious person? If she knew there was a unconscious person she had to see them and would know it’s much more than a unconscious person. Did they do a check if there was any relationship going on with them? She may be perfectly innocent but a unconscious person when they were covered in blood and White as a ghost at that point???!!!

So for me its weird that she waited so long to call the cops. Further...ive heard the audio of Ethan screaming...how someone coukd hear that and not immediately call the cops i don't know. I also read that BK had asked if anyone else had been arrested....wonder if Dylan was somehow involved.

Yeah, I cannot stand people who've never experienced trauma claiming that the freeze response is the same as becoming catatonic. You FREEZE for seconds, maybe a minute, not for hours and hours, that is called a catatonic state and is NOT a trauma response to seeing a vaguely threatening presence. I can say this because I have PTSD and I've experienced a freeze reaction in response to witnessing a life or death situation in front of my eyes, it doesn't last forever because your brain knows you're in a life or death situation and fills you with adrenaline forcing you to act. Her response was to close and lock door, meaning by definition she was NOT catatonic or frozen but taking action.

It is more of a punishment for these inmates to spend the rest of their life, living in a tiny cell for 23 hours a day, than to be killed by the death penalty where they don't have to suffer anymore. If she simply "slept through it all" how do you say she experienced something horrible and her life will never be the same? People in the military, law enforcement, emergency rooms and first responders experience 100X more trauma witnessing injuries and death than this person. And, from her "quick response" with contacting her friends before the police, she tells us all we need to know about her "brain freeze".
@KvltKommando
@KvltKommando Жыл бұрын
She was in a locked room, with a phone, then she was able to relax her nervous system enough to sleep deeper than most working adults do? NOPE. Not how trauma works, sorry, I have PTSD, I know the insomnia that comes with anxiety/panic states, this is so incredibly stupid. I've experienced a FREEZE in shock of seeing violence but you quickly snap out of it and realize if you do nothing you'll allow somebody to die or get maimed, I took action even as a child, don't tell me an adult woman was so terrified she simply forgot her phone existed. If you're in a state of panic, then you're not sleeping. It's one or the other. This isn't Colombia, US citizens know the police are easily reachable, people carry cell phones with them 24/7, and they most CERTAINLY do not climb into bed and sleep all day when a potential killer was literally right in front of your bedroom door. If she was freezing, she would've shown no response, instead she showed a typical response of locking the door, Any normal trauma response would've been to lock and barricade the door, call police immediately and grab a defensive weapon. The moment she closed and locked the door, it revealed she wasn't in a catatonic state but was in fact aware of the dangerous threat and capable of responding protectively. In other words, she 100% was not frozen with fear, but actively responding to her fear, aware of and feeling fear, yet she slept in all day? Didn't call or text the roommates? Didn't call out to them? Didn't ask, hey who is that the creep in the mask roaming around at 4 in the morning?
