I feel like Spider was joking about the blue stripe thing. I think Eywas immune response is smart enough to tell which humans are friendlies. I think Spider only painted on blue stripes because he sees himself as a Na’vi or he just wants to fit in more with Jake’s kids. Edit: Also I agree. Quaritch 2.0 is way more interesting and I’m exciting to see his character develop alongside Spider.

Quaritch is by far the most underappreciated villain in cinema right now. I strongly believe he has the potential to be this generation's darth vader, given how many parallels there are between the two characters in Avatar 1 & 2 + A New Hope & Empire Strikes Back. Both characters started out as very one dimensional doing nothing more than stomping round and being scary before they were explored more deeply in their second movies.

About not breaking the glass though - you also gotta look at an angle. In the tree bombing scene na'vi were shooting from the ground at an angle, while in the final battle and also ever since, they shot through the glass when facing it straight forward. This is the same reason why throwing a rock into water makes it sink immediately, but when you throw it at a low angle, it can skip several times from the surface. At an angle, there's just not enough momentum to arrows/rocks to break the tension. After all, sharp edges of arrowheads DID leave a scratch at the glass so it's not like it was made from something else, that was obvious right from the start. I'm telling you, medieval arrows were also known for being able to blast through plate mail when hitting it right on. I have never seen this as a flaw at all. If anything, then it makes sense that na'vi learned this angle trick from Trudy when she was explaining them how to take out rotors of gunships.
@PhailRaptor10 ай бұрын
Another point on this, at the Tree of Souls we are, IIRC, only ever shown the arrows penetrating the glass on the initial dive, putting that velocity into the arrow in addition to the strength of the bow.

I also thought it was interesting when Quaritch interrogated Spider. He referred to his original body, in third person. Mentioning stuff like "I am not your father" even though he had the memories and overall consciousness of the man who actually was Spider's father. Which I found rather interesting. We also see that when Neytiri held Spider at gunpo-I mean knifepoint, Quaritch looks genuinely scared, but tries to hide it under words like "He's not my son, we're not even related" which from a scientific standpoint, is true. But Quaritch still had the memories and consciousness of the person who WAS Spider's father, giving Quaritch the exact same emotional connection to him. So when Neytiri showed she was absolutely willing to kill Spider, Quaritch gave in because of that emotional connection. I will admit, when I first figured out they brought Quaritch back as the antagonist of Avatar 2, I was really skeptical. Flashing images of "Somehow Palpatine returned" made me scared of what that could do with this sequel. Yet, when I watched the movie, the way they brought Quaritch back made sense, and fit perfectly to the story and world-building. So I am happy they managed to actually pull it off like this. Can't wait for the 3rd movie. ^^
@dragonscottage9796 Жыл бұрын
That scene was always so fascinating to me because whenever we see such mind transferrals and cloning tech in stories, it's almost always considered like the same person, 'same body' and greeted with, oh love we missed you, we're so glad to have you back! (And moralisations based around that) But with Quaritch it was different. One day he woke up with the last memory of his being him getting scanned. Now he's in a different body and everyone is telling him that you're somebody else, that you are not 'you'. But according to his memory continuum, he never died. And here he was remembering intimate relationships with his gal, seeing the birth of his son, and all that jazz, but no. You are not you, said everyone. Of course, genetically your body is not a father, that's true. But your mind? A lot of other sci-fi would disagree and have hour long debates about personhood. And on parenthood? For one, you can't tell your own mom you're not her son and the whole community agreeing with you. She'd feel viscerally wrong about it and that's the same feeling quaritch is getting from his perspective based on memories. That's some next level gaslighting! But he's sorta accepted the 'not a dad' at last 'on paper', given it was clear he was more so trying to convince himself!!! that he's not Spider's father rather than to placate Spider in that talk scene between the two... I so love that scene as you can clearly read between the lines. I really started to like quaritch here, while I appreciated him before as an antagonist, he really got to shine in new levels in 2. I am so curious what will happen in 3 aswell!

Quaritch as a recom is a far more nuanced and enjoyable character. He's still an asshole, but he's given a chance to grow and branch out as a person. He's not as invested in the RDA's bullshit as he was as a human. Partially because he's no longer a human. I think he knows this. And the hunting of the tulkun for amrita for rich people to become immortal just doesn't resonate with him as much as the unobtainium did in the first film, as the unobtainium was more geared towards helping humanity as a whole, whereas the harvesting of amrita is just immortality for sale for whatever rich dickheads can afford it. And Quaritch, having already died, crushing his own human skull in his bare hands, doesn't have much respect for people who fear death to the point where they're willing to put people up to the arduous task of harvesting this literally golden substance for their own interests. Hell, the idea of amrita in general doesn't interest him much at all. Plus, he can't use it to halt his own aging, so there's no real benefit to him at all. Quaritch is hungry for revenge, and the RDA's bottom line and their agenda just doesn't mean as much to him anymore. Also, his journey with Spider is a very interesting mirror to Jake's journey with Neytiri from the first movie. There's something in him that just wants to do right by his kid since he was an absent and neglectful father the first time around. He's tapping more into what it means to be alive and to connect to others. Maybe I'm just overthinking this.

Quaritch in the first film was a bitter old boot from a dying planet. Who’d only been trained as a hammer. Who was fighting to save the earth. In the second film he’s a man with a thousand regrets, with paralysing fear from seeing Netyri’s arrows. Also he genuinely sees Spider as his son. From the very first moment in that interrogation. It wasn’t an interrogation. He never interrogated spider. He gave him a deal impossible to refuse to save him from having his brain microwaved. The first film has left quarritch disillusioned with what the hell he’s doing and who he is. But he sure isn’t a grunt who’s only trained to kill anymore. He’s learning a new culture, new language, new world. With all the wisdom of his last life and none of the restrictions and bitterness. He’s 100% going to die redeeming himself. Likely with Jake in the third film. Or he’s going to kill jake and then realise it was never about Jake i

In Universe: Quaritch's actions make more sense when you remember the arrows in the truck wheels. The Na'vi have been using the RDA for target practice so much that they don't even bother to take the arrows out any more. How often do they miss and kill someone? How often do they NOT miss and kill someone? Quaritch says they are very hard to kill. How would he know except via clashes wherein the Na'vi are being pretty damn violent? His conduct makes a lot of sense as a decades long slow burn, watching his soldiers die around him, and always having to hold back due to PR. If that were true, I would be utterly unsurprised that hew view Hometree as an opertunity to finally pull out all the stops, and teach the Na'vi why Bullying The Dragon is a stupid idea. Future film? If the humans actually want to settle Pandora, they will want to terraform it, which will mean changing its atmosphere. (It would make much more sense to use the same tech to fix Earth, but nevermind.) Since the second film introduced the idea that na'vi can't breath human safe atmospheres, and Quaritch is now stuck as an atavar, he's now on the same count-down timer as everyone else. Something something overcome their differences to defeat a common foe something. Though personally I'm also hoping for a 'let Ewya decide his fate' moment, and having to come face to face with the memories of Dr Grace Augustine... :P

I’m absolutely obsessed with Quaritch in The Way of Water. His relationship with Spider grows so subtly in most of their scenes together, that it’s hard to notice with just a couple viewings. This relationship, along with the fact that he’s a fucking Na’vi clone of himself, makes him such a more interesting villain. I’m so excited to see more of him in Avatar 3. Will he get punished for causing so much damage and failing his mission in The Way of Water? Will he get lost and survive in the wild for a little bit? How will he confront Jake again? Will he become a better person in any way, and/or become a better father for Spider? I’m so excited for Avatar 3 lol Plus most people have forgotten the fact that at the end of the film, Spider still has a GPS built into his mask for Quaritch to track at all times.

Something I'd like to point out about the colonel: in his old body, he was a 50+ year old man. I've noticed as I get older I find myself caring less and less about the consequences of my actions, and finding less value in things I did before. Miles 2.0 is bigger and bluer, but also younger/newer. The first time we see big blue is essentially his birth. He just happens to have the knowledge imprinted on him of years of experience and a body in its prime. This caution of youth makes him dangerous as he will be more cautious, but at the end of a2:wow he is also alone. Nothing is more dangerous on pandora than a 9ft+ marine that will do anything to survive

Miles Quaritch is a character from the movie Avatar, and his duality refers to his conflicting motivations and actions. On one hand, he is a military commander who is tasked with protecting the interests of the human colonizers on Pandora. On the other hand, he is a ruthless and violent man who is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve his goals, even if it means harming the Na'vi people and their environment. He is loyal to a fault, charismatic, strong, and doesn't let anything stop him. Really, he has all the makings of a hero and a Na'vi warrior. I thought it was quite clear in the 1st movie that the Na'vi arrows could pierce through the copter glass was because of the 90 degree angle to the point of contact with the added momentum of the flying Banshees also diving in the same direction (in way of water this momentum wasn't factored in so maybe it's not really mandatory). In the earlier scenes, the Na'vi were shooting while on foot onto the glass at a very small angle compared to the point of contact.

FYI, the reason arrows can piece the scorpions hull is because of the velocity from firing from an Ekran while diving. If they fired stationary on ground, it would bounce off. But because enough force was shot while diving straight down at probably 60-100mph, I’d say that’s enough to piece an armored window.

THe biggest flaw in Quaritch’s character was his war mongering. He was charged with keeping the security forces safe and escalated the conflict between the Nav’i and humans and got most of his soldiers and miners killed as a result. He does this again with the whaling ship that purposefully didn’t want to antagonize the natives in the second film. This results in them getting completely massacred. I just felt bad for the average soldier, miner or crew member working for the RDA and Quaritch because it seemed like their lives meant nothing.

Stephen Lang is too good. I mean honestly, even reduced to a fairly one dimensional villain in the first film, he still had this cool sorta charisma about him, but not in a just "cool villain" way but more like what we got to see in the second film, a core of humanity to him. I was so surprised but happy when I realized I was actually kinda liking Quarritch, as far as shitbags go. Sure it might steal the Darth Vader track a little too much but I'd be so stoked if he turns into something of an antihero in the third. The interactions they could have between both him and Jake and especially him and Neytiri, who he seemed to build an increasing smoldering hatred but also fearful respect of. I’ve been keeping up with interviews and avatar 3 photo leaks/script leaks From what I’ve read/watched since December 2022 up until now from James Cameron/jon landau and Stephen lang, recom quaritch is going to - develop a problematic relationship with the RDA - lean into becoming more Na’vi - slowly open his eyes to Eywa/Pandora - Spider bringing jake and quaritch together to work with eachother - also could have a love interest by A5 with one of the new villains but maybe not lol

So, I have question. If they can so easily transfer an individual's memories and psyche from human to Avatar, as they did with both Quaritch and Jake...WHY couldn't they have just done this with Jake's brother, rather than having to replace him with a twin who wasn't as initially capable of handling the task? It seems like Dr. Grace needed Jake's brother pretty badly to prove her case. Also, I would posit that Quaritch DID change for the better, at least in one sense, in the second movie. Both he and Jake are learning how to be fathers to their sons. While Jake is proud of Ne'tayam for being his firstborn son and his favorite, we see his bond with Lo'ak transform from one of Jake being dismissive and harsh, to Jake actually LISTENING to his son and respecting him when Lo'ak defends his sister, and finally, accepting Lo'ak as his son when he says "I see you." In my opinion, Lo'ak is, perhaps, a more worthy son than Jake thinks. He is not a soldier....he's more like his mother. Emotional, kindhearted, but honorable and brave. He saved Payakan and befriended him, and in doing so, learned how to embrace this new home he's been taken to. He is the one (apart from Kiri) who truly immerses himself in the ocean. Quaritch, on the other hand, has an opposite perspective. For him, Spider is NOT his son....he is the son of the former Quaritch. They don't share blood. But notice, while he initially has NO love for this child, he is the one who stops them from torturing Spider to betray the Na'vi. He starts to listen and respect the boy when Spider is teaching him the Na'vi way and when he is pleading mercy for the Ocean Tribes. He saved Spider's life twice in the movie....the first time when he took Spider after the first attack, rather than leaving him to die in the jungle alone. There was no REAL reason to. He wasn't one of Jake's kids. But he saw Spider struggling to breathe in the broken mask and he saved him. When Neytiri has Spider and says she will kill him if Quaritch doesn't release Kiri (and for the other reason) Quaritch releases Kiri, rather than see Spider be killed. HE stops Neytiri from hurting Spider. I think that is why Spider does what he does in the end. A life for a life. He just wasn't willing to go with this father, but instead remained loyal to his true family. At least, in that way, he has honor.

Hm, I don't think it's so much a "I want money" as a "Earth is dying and we need a new home" kind of deal. So, to that end he feels he's doing the right thing. He's helping to preserve life on earth...by ending the lives of Navis on Pandora. Parker is a corporate man. I can't see him coming around to anything more than what else can they make a buck off of. I also think that Quaritch is going to find out that the plan for Recoms is to be put on ice once the job is done.

I'm Still confused as to why, as a species, we would care so much about life on the moon at all? Not just nuking the moon and mining it after it's a baron rock makes sense, but asking for permission to mine the planet from a species that is completely outmatched by us is ridiculous. We went there to mine it, not co-habitat. Take samples of everything, study whatever you can, and get the precious ground money-making rock. Simple. It's not like the entire surface has to be destroyed in order to get the stuff there. If you wanted to create a record of life on the moon there would be plenty of time to take proper samples and do a proper study of whatever we find. By the time of the first movie we already had a massive understanding of the Navi culture and biology to the point that we completely understood their language and could create totally functioning clone bodies.. The theme of these movies is supposed to mimic the moral and cultural problems that we saw happen to the Native Americans during the European colonization of North America. it's such a clear comparison that most people I know still refer to this movie as "Pocahontas in Space" but the problem here is that the feel for the problem isn't really the same. We are not doing this to our own species, we're made to "FEEL" like we are because they designed the Navi to look and act like us but there completely alien... as horrible as it sounds this isn't as big of a moral dilemma as the movie would make it out to be.. Not to mention it would be a complete walk in the park to win a fight against these guys.. The movies work so hard to try and paint the combat as fair or evenly matched, when you account for the planet being "alive" and getting all the life on the planet to fight against the Humans, but it's simply not. massive shuttle craft being flown into tight rock formations when they could just go ABOVE them is stupid, they fly to the moon from orbit... there not combat vehicles.. not to mention that the only ground combat machines we see are cumbersome.. bi-pedal (walking) mech suits and the only air fighters we see are basically combat helicopters retrofitted to also be cargo haulers.. where are the tanks? Why aren't there more armoured gunships like the Dragon Assault Ship that took out the Hometree? where are the armoured monster machines? We had a massive forest levelling machine in the first movie that would have completely destroyed ALL the life it came into contact with, put some massive canons and anti-air on it and BAM, done. We win. This movie, again, tries so hard to make us think we couldn't or can't win here if we wanted to, and that diplomacy and cooperation are the only way but it's not, to the point that it's laughable.

Quaritch is a villain, yet there's no mistaking the guy is not a coward and has some sort of code of honour even in the first movie, people don't let themselves get killed for money or a job as eagerly as they do for an ideological cause, and Quaritch fought to the death.

I firmly disagree. The Na'vi were pissy because of mining, so they BURNED a dozer presumably killing the person driving inside. The troopers followed them, and killed the ones who did it. What were the troopers supposed to do? Allow an attack on their own, tattle on the young warriors to the elders? Quaritch never went FORWARD with acts of violence before peace was exhausted, he gave jake three months to become apart of the tribe, have him an EXTRA day to get him to move, and when all options for peace weren't going to happen, he pulled the trigger. As we hear him say "I'll be nice once, then I won't." Quaritch told Jake that they had three months before the dozers got to home tree, in that time the mining operation was expanding. It's Jakes fault for not speeding up the timeline, it's Jakes fault for thinking he could get the natives to move, and it's jakes fault for betraying his entire species for a blue alien. Quaritch literally gave the blue monkeys chance after chance to move, only to be met with a dozer being burned, and arrows shot at his machines. I think Quaritch was doing the best he could with the approval from Corporate he got. People want to leave out all the wrong the Na'vi did. Making them out to be 'peaceful blue people.' The humans tried to be peaceful, to mind their own business, maybe teach the blue people to learn english to communicate with humans, instead they got burned literally. Grace even admits that the young warriors thought she could protect them from the troopers, why would someone in the right need protecting? Quaritch from my perspective was nice, until he wasn't. Guess what, if they just MOVED none of them would have died. We see after the war, before the humans return, there are a BUNCH of massive ah trees they could've moved into. Would it have been the same, no. Would it have been really sad to see them move, yes. Instead the Na'vi chose to ignore Jake, and fight. Their home destroyed as a result.

ok so. Recom Quaritch is and isn't Quaritch. He is, in the sense that he has all the memories and capabilities (and then some!) of OG Quaritch, but isn't, literally isn't, the same being. It's weird. Try to put yourself in his shoes. You're yourself, but the you that isn't you, that is the original you, died. Recom sees OG as a failure, in more ways than one. It's like having your biggest regrets and failures on display, constantly, not to mention the whole "existential crisis" of being a copy. You want to do better, be better, than the OG failure to justify your very existence. I think that is part of why he crushes OG's skull, tries to be there more for OG's kid, and this mindset is established from his debrief by OG, where OG says something just FULL of hubris and Recom is like "well that didn't go to plan" through facial expression at Recom Wainfleet.

Yeah, the whole think about people lumping them together as the same character is a pain. I've seen computing comparisons explain this best to people. Taking files from one computer and putting them in another doesn't make them the same computer. Even if they had the same operating system and components. Not the same computer. And yet, everywhere you look, despite everything you've written as well as stuff mentioned in the video and more being right there in the open proving he's somebody else on top of the solid, straight up irrefutible fact that he is objectively a different person... It persists that people call him the same character. If somebody gets amnesia that doesn't stop them being them. The memories are files. They're not even original copies.
