Ruth being killed at the end..Just points to a metaphorical symbolic truth that poor people from crime ridden backgrounds rarely win or make it out. Their stories are the most tragic. I love the quote from Ruth where she says, "I am smart enough to know how fucked my situation is, but not smart enough to get out of it". This encompasses the feelings of people coming from lower class systems with systemic poverty, abuse and crime . The byrds-middle class family they ultimately win the game. I liked the ending because I felt it was realistic but Ruth was my favorite character and I hated seeing her go down. RIP RUTH.

Agreed but I also think thats the point. The Byrds will keep encountering friction and problems…but somehow make it out alive. And, on a personal note, my fictionalized tempered sociopathic man-crush on 'Jonah' was confirmed in the final moments of the finale. Marty beating up the guy in traffic is also important, the whole show Marty is the one who tries to diffuse situations from escalating to violence and he constantly suppresses his anger and frustration because he needs to think logically in order to get his family out of danger, but he slowly becomes accustomed to violence and that scene indicates that he now sees violence as a viable option to solve problems and that he is no longer able to control the rage that has been building up inside him, so i think that's why he was ok with his son killing another person

Eh. Realistically speaking the cartel/Camilla will kill Three. Let's not forget Ruth murdered a high ranking cartel member. Typically they find the suspect and kill them and their family. We all know the extent the Cartel could have gone with Ruth...a much slower, painful death

I feel like Ruth dying was the ultimate culmination of Wendy's ambition for power and Marty's desire to protect his family. Her going to Claire shaw who they needed badly to go legitimate, and Claire being some fake tough white collar exec was always a match made to explode. She was ambitious as the Byrd's, as vile as Wendy, yet from the jump lacked all of the backbone. She was just a scared young woman trying to play in the big dogs world, which was reflected by her having a bodyguard do her dirty work, where the bryds handled their own business. So due to the Byrd's biggest misjudgment, they finally came to a point where on one side they couldn't do anything to protect someone they wanted to protect, but also both reflected their truest desires: Wendy's lust for power since she kept what she wanted, and Marty protecting his family, by just allowing Ruth to go die. Also, Ruth went out like an absolute boss, still sad to see her go

The uncomfortable fact is that the deaths of Ben, Wyatt and Ruth were consequences of their own actions, not the Byrds. Wendy went out of her way to attempt to save Ben, begged him to leave and even tried to facilitate his escape, or her kids would be killed - and he just ignored her and became a total liability in the end. Wyatt was given chance after chance to have a better life and leave Darlene, he was told he would be killed if he stayed, and he chose to ignore that too. The Byrds begged Ruth not to kill Javi and warned what would happen to her if she did and once again she chose otherwise. The Byrds knew who they were up against and should have been listened to.

I think the ending was fitting but too abrupt(?) First off, I loved Ruth. Even in her death she was a more badass than the cartel bitch who shot her. Secondly, her death was a means to an end because they constantly mentioned her as the last Langmore. So there will be no revenge after her murder. Lastly, the idea of evil having the last laugh was perfect. They really nailed it, as the clean record Ruth gets killed while the truest evils laugh away altogether on her casino. Then the cherry on top was of course their innocent son committing murder. The script and narrative were excellent, if you nitpick at each detail individually, it is charismatic.. but I am disappointed how they ended the series so abruptly.

As season 4 progressed, I kept thinking that the Byrd family and their journey had a "Breaking Bad" vibe to it. It all starts out with a family member getting caught up in some bad sh*t for seemingly innocent reasons. Eventually, more members of the family are exposed to it. And by the end of the series, the entire family is now neck deep into theft, drug deals, money laundering, murder, etc. all in effort to "get out".

@@tarantinoish - nope, Marty had already been laundering Navarro Cartel drug money for the 10 years leading up to the pilot episode in which he comes up with the plan to move his operation to the Lake of the Ozarks in a desperate plea to save his life. And there is no evidence that Wendy knew all about it until Marty is forced to sell the house and move the whole family within a couple of days. Besides, even if she was aware of what Marty was doing prior to the first episode, she didn't play an active role with the laundering process until they moved from Chicago. Also, I didn't say that "Ozark" was just like "Breaking Bad". I said it had a similar theme of one person getting caught up in a lot of illegal sh*t that eventually pulls in the rest of the family. And they do share in that same theme.
@tarantinoish2 жыл бұрын
@@dwaynecoy1871 Have you not watched the show? There is a flashback episode in season one where Del first asks Marty to start laundering for them. You know, ten years ago. And before he makes his decision he discusses it with Wendy. It’s a whole thing. She’s a thrill seeker. She used to ransack houses as a kid for fun. Yada yada yada. Anyways she totally agrees and so they decide to do it. Bruce just comes along for the ride. They were at a fancy golf course getting wined and dined after Marty solved their books for them. And calm down, that’s all I was pointing out. I don’t think it’s like Breaking Bad very much at all the way you describe it. Wendy is more like Walt than Marty. She is the one corrupted by power. Marty is just really smart, good with numbers. The roles are split. There’s different themes involved. In fact Wendy is the one that totally gets Marty to start laundering in the first place, and it wasn’t to provide for his family like Walt. There was no catalyst to set off the life of crime. And the kids are more involved throughout the show. They actually participate in the crime, which Holly and Walt Jr. certainly never did. Sure, they’re both crime dramas. Both extremely well written with great acting and some edge of your seat suspense. But they’re way different.

The show should've ended with the viewers never truly seeing the Cartel, as if it was a shadow lurking around, omniscient of everything the Byrdes were doing, and in some clever twist the Byrdes find a way to get out, be clean, but paying a price (for example, Jonah getting killed because he went too far, crushing the trope of the "genius young boy solves everything")

Julia Garner made this a hit. Marty & Wendy Byrd's character's were always far from being believable and more on par with The Brady Bunch. Darlene was believable as all hell.

I haven’t been able to watch the second part since I’m in Mexico and they still haven’t released it out here but as soon as It’s on Netflix I’m watching it ! This is one of the best series I’ve ever watched next to Weeds, Breaking Bad, & Dexter I’m definitely gonna miss this

I had a similar take about the car crash after seeing it, my reddit post analysis: I really do love the writing of this show. Themes and motifs are very common for the Ozark writers. I would like to think that this car accident had a very similar effect as the initial car crash with Marty and Wendy when she was pregnant. In that car accident they were hit and began their journey with deep loss. This time around they've been suffering the consequences of making choices around loss and constant grief for years, and when this van accident happens it represents a shift back. After the first accident Wendy felt dead inside which ultimately led to the start of the Byrdes Laundering as a way to make them feel alive again, but after years of escaping death by their own means the second accident presents the fickleness of life and thus making them feel more alive than ever before. Thus Wendy's transition to a more empathetic response to Ruth's danger, and Marty's more logical approach to the acceptance of an inevitable death. Of course as shown in the final scene it doesn't mean the Byrdes are free of their life of crime, but it does represent that death is ultimately inevitable and they can only worry about the death they can get away with / prevent.

the ending was cartoon like, terrible I wish it would have another season or a spin off with Ruth and the cartel.

Thank you thank you so much for this very well-done analysis!!! I loved the show and liked the ending fine. I mean it was a little rushed but that's more Netflix's fault than theirs. But I've been debating the same points with others, without really wanting to rewatch the whole series right now to pinpoint the specific instances that support them. Now I'll just send them this link lol. Also, I had forgotten about the opening narration. That does make me think there'll be a final movie/limited series in the future because you always try to bookend that kind of thing if you can.
