Also: I forgot to mention that just like the delay you don't want too many lows and highs in the reverb signal, you can see at 9:07 I have an eq filtering them out before feeding the 'verb

love your videos mate, legend. May I ask a question. It wasn't mentioned in the video and the sound was great, do you not layer pianos? Or is sound selection good enough?
@Bthelick8 ай бұрын
Thanks i don't usually layer no. . Layering pianos typically causes them to chorus, because pianos are not actually 'in tune' when sampled. Pianos pretty unique among acoustic instruments in that they are "stretch tuned" , meaning the higher notes are sharper than mathematically pure pitch and the lower notes are flatter. Not to a fixed standard either. It's all dependent on the length of the strings in the original piano. So they'll all be tuned slightly differently. So any layer produces a chorus effect and personally I feel chorus softens the sound so when I want a punch direct sound I use a single piano, want that's mono compatible (Which is another thing to watch out for as many are not)
@adamnewton83358 ай бұрын
@@Bthelick thanks so much, great answer. So you say the single piano used should be mono?
@Bthelick8 ай бұрын
"Mono compatible". Meaning it doesn't change significantly when played back in mono. It's common to find sampled acoustic instruments like pianos , strings etc that were miced up to 'impress'. Giving a nice wide sound, that's a great technique for the few people left on the planet with audiophile stereo systems who listen to well recorded orchestral and jazz music, but it's terrible for club music! Many wide sounding stereo instruments collapse in mono due to phase cancellation, making it much quieter and thinner, thus completely changing the mix when played backing mono. Or even near mono. That's important because many clubs still play back in mono, on many listening devices like TVs, sound bars and phones have their speakers too close together to be usefully stereo. The only listeners who benefit greatly will be headphones users, The headphones aren't even technically stereo either, they are binaural , but don't get me started on that 🤣! To sum up, always check your dance music in mono. We have make our tracks work for both mono and stereo playback. (Which is why panning elements doesn't solve mix problems) If you ever get time, at my first live stream making piano house from scratch, there is a part in there where I discovered the reference track was poor in mono and I talk about that more.

Noce video! Love this one! I have one question (It could be a topic that can be for a video), But I hear that you didn't see chain the Piano and kick to get that Pump effect on that is very common in EDM music. How you get that feeling right? I heard that the Kick doesn't clash with the Piano in this example. There is a Sound selection theory behind this or just mixing?
@Bthelick Жыл бұрын
Thanks! It's just an artistic decision really. The side chaining (for effect) wasn't a thing in the 90s, so if you want a more 'classic' feel then it's not needed. That sound is coming back via the likes of Ben Hemsley and Ewan McVicar etc. The sound selection here is why you can hear both, there is no extra mixing that you didn't see in the vid. the kick has no processing on it all. The only place side chaining is really needed is sub bass, anything else is an aesthetic /emotional choice.
@jorgedejesustejedavaldez5283 Жыл бұрын

@AutPen38 Жыл бұрын
With piano house tracks (especially when using the M1 or samples of it) unless you play chords in a really low octave (which isn't a good idea for a piano-led track) the piano chords' fundamental frequencies are way above the pitch of the kick or bassline. I think it's one of the reasons why M1 piano tracks were so popular and relatively easy to produce. By default, the "plasticky" M1 piano didn't interfere with the kick. Rolling off a bit of low end and boosting some high mids (with an EQ) makes it cut through with no sidechain ducking required.

Hmmmm I'm not sure I agree with that statement. the test of time is a pretty good arbiter. Like the 808, 909 and others before it, there were lots of contenders to those machines and much cheaper ones too that haven't stood the test of time. it's success goes way beyond familiarity imo.
@FortheSoulFtS Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the hass effect plugin screwing the mids I just realize some of my tracks were less punchy just because of that. I can add to the process You may want to add soothe 2 after the ott to get back some clarity in the mids and then a 1176 after the dducking delay to add glue.
@Bthelick Жыл бұрын
I've never needed a plugin like soothe tbh, after a few hundred million streams you stop trying to make each sound 'perfect' when you see it doesn't make much difference to your audience, and in fact can hurt the track. Instead I focus on the emotional response, it's perfectly appropriate for the piano to 'stick out' in a piano house track! I find plugins like soothe make can put you in danger of making very balanced mixes, which emotionally can be a flat. Certainly as I am always catering for an audience at beginner level, any flat recommendation of any dynamics processing before they have the ear training and monitoring environment to properly judge those elements would be irresponsible on my part.

Hey mate. Loving your videos, on a bing streak. However, if it’s not too much to ask, are you able to share the delay and reverb custom racks that you’ve setup there? You’ve set them up a bit different way with chains. Just a bit hard to follow as beginner and get the same sound. All good if you can’t. Awesome video.
@Bthelick Жыл бұрын
Yeah lots of people asking! I'm working on it ASAP. Thing is they use 3rd party plugins which I can't redistribute. I'll be showing it in video soon but they are just two parallel paths (chains) and one is blank (for dry) and the wet side is just the effect (like tal reverb) preceded by a volume knob (utility plugin). That's basically it. It's just like a send effect that's all it is. But the reason I do it that way is so when I grab sounds from other sessions I don't have to remake the send effect.
@Jvssvl Жыл бұрын

Haha. It is pretty amazing what you can get away with now. I only have this little hx90 mini pc now. And whilst the free processors and instruments are great, I don't think I could manage with only free sample libraries in some genres, I do abuse my splice membership! Having said that though it's more of a speed thing, free samples might be possible if time wasn't a factor.

@@Bthelick I just want to use your philosophy on only having plug ins you actually use and organized samples. I will work on it soon

Well do you consider this track to sound mixed? Because I do. And everything is just right there in the video. I don't do anything else to it for release. That's the whole process.

@@Bthelick Yes I do, that piano sound amazing, it has the perfect amount of reverb and delay!
