I really enjoyed your breakdown/reaction to this song. It reminds me of my high school years (many decades ago). I wrote an extremely long poem for this girl I REALLY liked. My friends thought it was stupid of me to declare my feelings for a girl via a poem, but that was what I was good at. Long story short (too late), the girl liked my poem so much that she copied it and covered the inside of her locker with the poem. I don’t know if anyone else has said this but the Korean title for Boy in Luv is “Real Man” and for Boy With Luv it’s “A Poem For Small Things” (or similar) so I feel that shows the difference in attitude already. I love the song and I loved your reaction, thanks guys

The song itself doesnt bother me, its reflective of immature adolescent infatuation, and the lyrics are mainly self criticism and confusion/miscommunication. The video is 😬 but I can see a whole lot of teen drama tropes in it - these images and experiences were typical in most teen dramas and fiction i partook. I blame the mv director not the boys - this was their early days where they may not have the position to veto everything. I love that they used it as an opportunity to learn and develop a healthier message from this point on. Contrasting this with Fake Love shows HUGE growth

Most of their songs are deep and inspires us ARMYs. But it is nice to see them singing about young love that normal teenagers go thru. Most of them were teenagers at that time afterall. The music itself is fire 🔥.

In my opinion, raw working class high school scenes and rough or violent scenes involving frustration driven by obsessive lust for a woman has a history in 2nd generation K Pop. 3rd generation BTS twisting similar manner of visuals or lyrics to portray schoolboy emotions toward females here or in their song War of Hormone were meant to be theatrical representations, not misogynistic expressions. The word misogyny has a very specific dictionary definition, much like the word racism. Both all too frequently are used to characterize people in ways which are outside that definition. This most often happens when there are parties with agendas. In case of young BTS, stans of the three letter SM group found emergent BTS as a potential challenge to their beloved ***. Though Big Bang, a top tier male group of the same period from a different large corporation (YG) had similarly suspect lyrics, BTS was a small corporation threat. In their minds without the need for big corporation respect, BTS could be squashed like a roach. Slandering and belittling them would mold public opinion. And to some extent it did. When people hear something disconcerting there is a tendency to follow suit band wagoning with negative opinionating never investigating the legitimacy of their attacks. Sadly, speaking negatively in unison with others make people feel good. While I think it is fair to say there was some sexualization of women in early BTS songs, the term misogyny was wielded like a cudgel swung wantonly and with destructive intent. The fanbase had the comfortable position of a Big 3 corporation's similar desire to hold back artists from small corporation groups. While SM could quietly behind the scenes try to be monopolistic, they also could quietly tolerate their fanbase being attack dogs.

I can def see how certain things (esp in the mv) might bother some people, but I’m pretty sure the one that really ended up bothering people was actually the song War of Hormone (on Dark & Wild album). That song was where eventually after that RM had women’s studies professors reviewing the lyrics to his songs (even though at least culturally speaking it didn’t seem much worse than this one- at least for me.) But the follow through with their actions instead of just with their words is one of the really impressive things about BTS 보라해요! 💜

Also, apparently, the weird interactions with the girl, those scenes were very common in k dramas of the time, and BTS was supposed to be emulating that. People already mentioned how apologetic they were to the girl. This is one of my favorite songs, but the mv does make me wince, suga and Jin's interactions mostly. The words don't bother me, we've all had thoughts like that when we hit puberty regardless of gender imo. Eta: the song in the beginning is just one day 💜 Borahae 💜

I really enjoy your reactions! I’ve seen other people already mention the rough behaviour being very typical in kdramas (also in anime) and how the guys (and the company) have grown beyond the stereotype and apologised for the more misogynistic themes in their older stuff. I would definitely encourage you to also watch their live performances. Particularly 2019 MMA and 2019 MAMA as they performed the older songs like Boy in Luv. I personally fell in love with them 2 years ago after seeing the live performances as they just blew me away! Hope you continue enjoying learning more about BTS and Army!

All the scenes are super famous Kdrama tropes during that time.. The most popular Kdrama with school background storyline was Boys Over Flower with Lee Minho and Goo Hye-sun; where the producers were inspired by I think... Even nowadays, grabbing hands, pushing against walls and such are still in trend in the Kdrama... 😅😅😅 And yes, the lyrics are appropriate for their age within their culture. It's part of their school trilogy and the trends during that time is being a macho man which is why the title of the song in Korean is "Sangnamja" which means 'Real Man'. Hi Guys! I had a chance to watch your Super Nova music video and commend you for your efforts! If you want to see pen game of BTS you should definitely check Ddaeng, Trivia:Love, Disease, Tears etc. Lyrics is one of the thing I love about BTS. They balance out korean & English words perfectly. It don't sound odd. As a bilingual I try sometimes it came out weird so huge respect to them. Namjoon really love to play with words like really. It's evident on his solo songs & album. I love how BTS 3 rappers have different approach to deliver. Best example is Tear (yes I love this song alot, one of the best rapline song)

This song is like quintuple-tied for 1st place in my heart of all BTS songs (ok, maybe dodeca-tupled 😂) because I was an alt-rock fan for decades b4 finding BTS. The beat, guitars, & growly vocals all hit that sweet alt-rock vibe... You guys even nailed so many of the things I love about this song! I adore your attention to detail - yes, the lyrics read strangely in straight English translation, but *hearing* them is something completely different...and I love that you recognize and appreciate how well they mix English & Korean lyrics, and the effort involved in working rhyming schemes with more than one language...This song has just enough repetition (but not too much to make it sound lazy lyrically) to allow me to be able to sing along with the Korean for 70% of the song, JKs choppy rap helps too - only the rapline's parts are still beyond me 😂 Someday I hope to be able to sing along 100% to at least one BTS Korean-language song 💜

Aw man, I hate it when ARMYs try to “warn” reactors about this song and War of Hormone in particular. I’d much rather the reactor watch it and form their own opinions without the sense of dread or the wall put up that they may have to say the “right” thing in response to BTS’s more “controversial” songs. I agree with you guys that the lyrics aren’t very problematic, just young boys with huge crushes, trying to be cool and appeal to their crush. The MV, while definitely aggressive and not very cool towards the girl by American standards, was very common in Korea teenage dramas at the time. Additionally, I see this MV and even the lyrics as more of a mocking of the boys themselves and their utter insecurity and lack of ability to reach out and TALK to this girl like a normal person. In short, the lyrics and MV to me mock young love and mock how much young boys try so hard to be “cool” and get their crush’s attention. While at the same time wondering why they’re so “lame” and why the girl seems completely uninterested and how they can change the situation towards their favor. Thank you for your reaction and open minds with this. While I still think the song is a bop, I think you two will enjoy some of their future stuff WAY more💜💜

To stand out from all the other million bands debuting in 2013 they worked hard on the choreo and their singing/ rapping. They worked harder than other groups and became known for their amazing stage presence and choreo. This song was on their mini EP Skool Love Affair. All of them(EPs and albums) are great. Hope u check them out. This song is very kdrama inspired. They have made songs more recently to fix their image/mistakes. (Halsey represents ARMY here. She wasn't expected to dance, but she decided she wanted to try). Both choreographies end with them doing "I love you" in sign language. Halsey got a sparkly mic from the guys as a gift because she loved theirs. In return she gave them pink tennis bracelets because they friends for life. She talks to RM all the time by text. They performed together in USA on an award show in May 2019. She is the only artist from the US who asked to learn their choreo. Their choreography is no joke. In the US its easy stuff. About the song it's very close to my heart and this is literally ARMY's happy song. Halsey represents ARMY here in the song. This song is basically a letter to ARMY. As the Korean title of this song suggests, “a poem for small things.” When asked to talk about the song, RM said, “It’s about finding little joy in love, being curious about the little things, the details like what you’re eating, what you’re doing. But, most importantly, Boy With Luv is like a fan letter from BTS to ARMY. That’s the most important thing.” It is quite interesting to think about the shift from Boy In Luv (2014) to Boy With Luv - from a young, passionate, immature love that is represented with masculine, macho-like lyrics and visuals, to a mature, ‘true’ love that is about every small thing in life and in love that is represented with feminine, reflective lyrics that are more accepting and embracing.

This video uses common themes and tropes from Korean dramas that were hugely popular at the time. Any drama and hate they got was just antis looking for any little thing to hate on them for. It was organized and systematic and rumor was some of it was organized by a big entertainment company. This video didn’t have issues with their lyrics so much, just that one scene wherebJin slams the girl and again that was a common thing back then. They were also accused of plagiarism again in this video bc they wore school boy uniforms, like no other videos have boys in uniform right? They later come into plagiarism accusations again bc jimin had orange hair and so did another more famous singer. I know it’s stupid. War of hormones is the song they were accused of misogyny in the lyrics

my problem with people having issues with bts songs is the sheer hypocrisy many people especially kpop stans had because bts concept of rude bad boy is rough to girl cause he likes her ( and lets be honest many parents still tell their daughters this globally which is the real problem) is something VERY common in korean dramas and many korean groups music videos and the lyrics are very common in western music actually western music is much worse than bts ever went. it feel performative how anyone tried to condemn bts while supporting so many groups and artists who have done the same or worse and never spoke out about them. thats why most armys love these songs and still recommend them there was a short period where we didnt send them to reactors but we got over that because why shouldnt we. people cant pick and choose when they wanna be activists or advocate for something yet thats always the case when it involves bts. so i dont find anything wrong with any of bts songs or music videos. especially when people conveniently accused them when bts became competition against big groups.

They have hiphop backgrounds and were HEAVILY influenced by largely AMERICAN hiphop artists. When I think abt that the lyrics are understandable. I know that the culture in Korea is different, as well as many other places and people have their own thoughts, and I respect that, but contrast the lyrics with how they were treating the girl actor behind the scenes 🌟goalsss🌟

I love this song, but I stick to the choreography MV instead of the actual MV 😂 the choreography is amazing and while I know the video is tongue-in-cheek, it’s still a bit triggering 😬😬 Also a lot of ARMYs don’t know about the choreography MV for this song (and lots of other BTS songs!), but I highly recommend it. It’s the best of both worlds: like a dance practice and MV in one 😂

I won't say that some of their songs/vids weren't a bit questionable (mostly vids. The only lyrics I take issue with personally is intro sla), but its very conspicuous that BTS are always the one being picked on for it. They were still young and pictured love in the ways they had seen in popular media of the time. There were plenty of BG's with similar songs. A lot of them were even shown to be misogynistic behind the scenes too. But kpop fans still support and defend those groups while throwing undue hate on BTS (who are good ppl that take fair criticism very seriously).

In this video I think it was an effort to try and show or express the chaotic energy and not knowing what to do or handle things as young men. I def don't think they were trying to say this is ok to do to women. Holding the wrist/arm is more common over there because holding hands is considered showing public display of affection. From what I understand it is considered to be more polite to hold a girl by her arm or wrist so people don't misunderstand that they are not together dating. I do know that in making the video Jin felt uneasy and uncomphortable doing those scenes of the video and kept apologizing to the girl in the video for his inappropriate behavior.
