In an effort to keep videos more relatable to my audience, I'm foregoing all of the bigger, faster machines I have available to me to move this big ol' pile of gravel, and instead I'm using my John Deere 1025R. Who doesn't love a bit of extra seat time?! So let's see if there are any strategies we can use to move this pile faster and get the most out of our little subcompact.

The 1025 did really good. Hey, it has its limits, but so much better than a shovel and wheelbarrow. Thanks for taking the time to show this model in action.

I was told by a very experienced machine operator that when back-blading to level, you should have as much material in the bucket as possible to avoid having to put so much down pressure. This advice, of course, came AFTER I had finished the job!

Great Video. It's difficult at times to get a full bucket with a small machine. If you pull the pile down first to make it "fluffy", it makes it much easier to get a full bucket. I picked that up from Mike at Outdoors with the Morgans. I have tried it and it works great. No matter the size of the machine, it sure beats a shovel and wheelbarrow. Cheers

I did 11 full loads of 3" and 5/8" road base with my 1025R last spring in course of a day. Tractor got a workout big time. Its a great workhorse. New bucket got scratched up lots but they make green paint everyday :)

Wow. That was quick. Already people don't like what you were doing. I've got a 2038R I should take delivery of in about a week. Can't wait. Later this summer I will be doing this same thing, for the foundation of a shed. I appreciate all the hints, as I have only sat on a tractor twice, and never actually used one. I have learned a lot watching you and TTWT, but of course experience cannot be taught. No doubt I'll make a lot of mistakes. I'm glad these guys won't be able to criticize what I do...

Good demo of the 1025. As you said, a bigger machine would've moved it faster. I take the digger bar off when handling gravel whether dense grade or sized stone. I find it easier to scoop the rock and much easier to smooth it with just the bucket. TBH, I've started leaving the bar off the bucket most of the time.

I once heard a story about the union representative that was berating an owner of a construction company about buying an excavator. The union rep said that buying the excavator would coast the union a hundred jobs for workers with shovels. The owner said why not a thousand workers with spoons. To the point, ANY tractor will move dirt faster than a person with a shovel and wheelbarrow. I got rid of a MF GC 2000 for just the reason of your video. Your 1025 got the job done but as you pointed out in the first minute of the video, you have larger machines that would have moved the soil in a much shorter amount of time. For me the light went on when a friend helped me level an area for a twenty foot shipping container. He was using a large Bobcat and I was using my MF GC 2000. His bucket was at least three times as large as the bucket on my little tractor and my tractor had neither the power or the weight to cut into the existing dirt to level the pad. I quit after about ten minutes because I was only in the way and wasn't getting anything done. Shortly thereafter I put a down payment on a Kubota L3901. I don't have ANY regrets buying the larger tractor. Now when I get on the tractor I feel like I actually accomplish something. Still appreciate the videos.

Great use of a little machine. Between the forward and back dragging with the bucket and then land plane you will have a great surface. The use of a tooth bar back dragging really helps spread the material out nicely.

I understand the purpose of this was to show the capability of the 1025R (Or any sub-compact), but, wouldn't it have been more efficient to have the trucker roll and dump over the actual location? Then just grade it? Not trying to be snarky, purely just being logical. However then, you wouldn't have gotten a cool video.

I'm thinking you are going to need 40 more tons. As a retired truck driver you have to swing really wide to make a right hand turn into the driveway, I would rather go past it and turn around and come in from the other way and make a left into the drive. One could pull past the driveway and back into it , that would be very easy to do.

my heavy hitch toothbar did not connect correctly...because the Kubota blade edge welding was out of spec. They did not grind down the welds to the nominal thickness quoted in the manual. Took an hour or so of grinding the bucket to get them to fit. But now they dig in easily and don't come off.

Tooth bars are great for digging but they don't help the bucket get any fuller has been my experience. When I had my 1025r it had the backhoe on the back and I can spread rock like a skid steer with just the bucket pretty fast. Amazing how much I could do with a small tractor.

If you have a day to get something done and a smaller piece of property with smaller tasks, then a smaller tractor works just fine. If you have a bigger piece of property with bigger tasks, but only a day to get things done, then you need a bigger piece of equipment.

I use a 72” wide landplane as counterbalance. It can be used to push the dump piles around a bit then pulled to level the road/drive/pad afterwards. I’ve never had a bucket full of gravel overcome the counterbalance weight of the landplane.

Would it not have been easier to have the delivery driver tailgate when he dropped it off? Seems like it would’ve saved timed and reduced the effort to a rear blade operation only. Just a thought.

A couple of points to ponder: the tires shouldn't be squatting, increase the tire pressure. The tooth bar doesn't work in leveling. I suspect that by removing the bar, the final leveling would have been better. The machine was working at max capacity. Either use a bigger machine or get Johnny X from TTWT.
