Spokeshaves are one of the coolest tools ever invented. I just started using one to shape an axe handle from scratch from an old pick axe handle. Got myself an old vintage workbench with a vice to shape my first handle - came out alright, but to get the same fitmanship as ol Buckin aint so easy. Lots more practice for me - at least its fun using the spokeshave and the more you use it the better you get.

Hey Buckin', I would love to see a video on the different chains you use, skip tooth, full house etc., and how you set the tension on them. Down here on a Texas ranch, with almost nothing but bois d'arc, we just tighten the chains as tight as we can get them and replace them when they stop cutting! lol I've been watching your videos on filing them and I'm still trying to grasp "get the gullet" haha! I have a many a chains to practice on so I keep reviewing. Lol keep it up, love your videos! Take care buddy.

What kind of oil do you put on your axe handles ?
@2-MuleTeam5 жыл бұрын
Mike, the reason I saw your post here on Buckin's old video, is because this is one of my all-time favorite videos by him. I've watched it many times! :) I'm a relatively new sub, but I've used this wood oil for almost 40 years. It is "Watco" Danish Oil, and Buckin and I think there is none better. He affectionately calls it "Watca" (hilarious). Apparently several people have asked what he uses, including one I saw who asked what "color" of Watco he uses. I have studied his close-up "oiling" vids where he is applying it as a labor of love, and I cannot quite tell the color, although he may have divulged this "military secret" at some point in the past in his almost 1,800 videos, eh? I'll tell you what I use--I LOVE "Dark Walnut" Watco, and use it on lighter wood, including especially old oak. I have already used Dark Walnut on a new hickory handle after performing a propane "burn job" per Buckin's example. It turns out awesome . . . .
@2-MuleTeam5 жыл бұрын
One more thing-go to about 3:19 on the play timer: When he says, "A Super 10-10 . . . . Now I wonder what the Super means??" And then, "I love ya, Pal! I feel like throwin' a bar and chain on it and takin' it to work today and givin' it a run!!" Ha!! I am laughing out load every time I watch that! One of the best clips ever . . . .
