Just found Billy's channel. I own two Harbor Freight electric chain saws. I know even I laugh at that. My slowest cutting has tooth link, link, link, tooth. It is like an old man like me with not all their teeth. My other chan saw was twice the price and has tooth, link, link, tooth. It is pretty slow. Anyway I sharpened both and what a difference. Thank you Billy!!

When i started to hand file, I watched and learn many filing tutorials and tips but i couldn't get a perfect result because i didn't tighten the bar enough. Just a little wobble during filing makes a huge difference. Hope this helps someone new like i was. Btw Billy, that saw cut like hot knife through butter. Just beautiful to watch

I just got a Holzfforma G660. An I cut a little bit with it. It cut ok. Just ok. Not what I think a new chain should cut. So when I got home. I bragged my file. An seen right off that the chain was not excepting my file properly. It had no gullet. Must be a square grind. Gullet is straight. With what I call a beek at the top. So I did exactly what you are showing. To file a proper gullet in it. But my Stihl files dont file as quick as your files seem to. I worked my tail off. Please tell us where we can get good files like yours. I have learned so much from you. More than just filing. I love you Buckin. An I'm not afraid to say it. Please never stop spreading the message.

a video covering all chain sizes with what file and raker gauge would be helpful
@brettblack70492 жыл бұрын
You can use a 3/16 on a 3/8 lp(picco in still brand). Ots not so much about the size as understanding what the cutter should look like in order to perform well with your cutting style, saw, and wood. A chain should be tuned to those things for maximum performance or to last longer in dirty/frozen wood.

I wish you would make a video on choosing the right size file to use. How do you determine what size file to use. You go over how to sharpen a chain but not most importantly which size file to use. How many other people are interested in more sharpening videos of 3/8Lp? These are the chains I have the most trouble with. 3/8 and .325, i can almost always sharpen them to put brand new chains to shame, so much so that whenever i have time, i will redo a brand new chain right out of the box. 3/8Lp, i'm still a bit hit or miss with.
@gerritvanwilligen2 жыл бұрын
Think this has to do more with the type of chain than rather the size. I have an old Stihl 180 and a 193T that use the P (Pico) chain and it's simply a different type than for example the RS chains that can be used on a 3/8 and .325. And for the record: I file a nasty RS chain that does a wicked job, but also in my case the P chains are somehow... less, or how ever you want to name it. The type of chain simply is less sharp, but is way more forgiving than an RS when you hit something or cut into some dirt.
@nate28382 жыл бұрын
@@gerritvanwilligen By type, are you referring to full-chisel vs semi-chisel? Full chisels come to a square corner where the meet the side plate, and semi's come to a rounded corner where they meet the side plate. I can file both full and semi's to perform noticeably better than out of the box when they are 3/8 or .325.
@gerritvanwilligen2 жыл бұрын
@@nate2838 I'm not a native speaker and not too familiar with all the terms, but you are right: I meant the difference in square and rounded. But that's not the issue apparently 😀
@brettblack70492 жыл бұрын
That's surprises me, I've seen some very poorly sharpened picco chain that still cut well. I have a video on my channel from last summer or the one before where I fixed athe chain on an ms192, I talk about what I was going to do to it/what it needed, but don't show me filing (no room on phone at the time). It's basically the same principles as with a larger chain, you have to know what you want the cutters to look like when they are sharp in order to know how to file them. You are setting the rakers on them?
@nate28382 жыл бұрын
@@brettblack7049 Typically yes. The trouble i've often had with picco is it hooks to easily. i find the 5/32 file too small, and the 3/16 a little too large until its been filed a couple times, it wont fit between the tooth and the raker.

Some engines " kickback " when stopping. This can put stress on the starter pawls etc. Also the starter cord gets rubbed, jerked against recoil housing & fibres weakened, damaged. Having the handle pulled out, allows the shock, force to be absorbed, dissipated in a more controlled manner. A lot of vintage equipment, parts are getting harder to source. So try to minimise the risk of damage. An easy habit to adopt for all recoil start equipment, could save a lot of time, money in repairs

I've never quite understood the whole *shorter bar cuts faster* thing. The teeth of the chain are traveling at the same speed, regardless of the length of the bar. The cut should be exactly the same, if everything else is even.
@LordProsen2 жыл бұрын
More friction from the longer bar might steal some power and therefore speed of the chain?
@jamesfield65682 жыл бұрын
There's more chain to pull around the bar ,taking more power to do it. It's like carrying a heavier load in your truck.
