I was under treatment for depression with psychotherapy and medications in he 1980's. I used jogging as a form of meditation and also discovered Buddhism. I had to quit running because of bad knees. I stopped all medications in 1991. I am still a Buddhist. At age 77, having spent 15 years in SE Asia as a medical volunteer in a predominately Buddhist country I'm now fully retired. I feel better than ever.

For almost 60 years I wasn’t aware that I suffered from anxiety. Buddhism and meditation has helped me realize who I am and to accept it. It sounds simple but how many of us really know who we are? Being anxious and/or depressed is nothing to be ashamed of.

@@Sk3r0 That’s a great question, obviously one difficult to answer. I just turned 68 and for most of my life not fully ‘aware’ of who I am. Through a protracted period of philosophical study specifically in Buddhism and though both breath meditation and Nichiren chanting, I’ve come to understand more about my tendency towards anxiety and how it has impacted me both mentally and physically. It allows me to step outside myself.

I have 'suffered' from anxiety for almost 4 years now and meditation and acceptance had a lot to do in reducing it. I meditate 20 min. every morning starting with body scan (focusing on each body part from head to toe and 'feeling' relaxed with every outbreath by releasing the tension aka body scan) and then focusing on the breath, keeping a count upto 10 (The mind drifts and I simply acknowledge it without being agitated by it and bring my focus back on breath). I don't think meditation reduces the anxiety just by itself. I see it as a practice. I learn what really feels like a relaxed state when i meditate and if during the day (and especially when going to bed) I feel anxious then first I accept it ('I am feeling anxious' or 'my body is shaking involuntarily', just simply noticing it and nothing else) and 'being with it' (in a funny way you just start enjoying the body shaking, idk) and just take a deep breath, exhale while trying to bring the same feeling of relaxation that you experienced during meditation. I don't know if it makes sense to you when you read this but this really works for me.

Biggest change for me has been acceptance of myself regardless of what the society wants ME to be. They don't have any right to dictate that, only I have it. So now I accept myself for who I am instead of constantly trying to meet society standards.
@armeetindergill
@armeetindergill 5 жыл бұрын
@@DS-Pakaemon I get where you are coming from. But for me society/culture is something that keeps people sane to a certain degree. For e.g. if my sleeping habits and my eating habits are aligned with those around me I feel less stressed because I don't have to figure out these things by myself. The questions of the sort 'what should I do when...' are answered already for us. If society wants me to be a self dependent man by a certain age, then I get it. It's important to have things in order. Accepting yourself also means to accept that we are nothing without people around us. We are social beings. But as with everything, and most importantly, too much of order (societal pressure) is also not good. As Buddha said - take the middle path.

Things that changed my life that I wish I could know sooner: 1. Constantly improving myself by building good habits(nofap, cold showers, meditations, controlling anger and emotions, doing fasts, and practicing stoic mindset) 2. That trying addiction again of curiosity will lead me to addiction to it again. (I went nofap 110 days and relapsed because I wanted to know if it would feel like first time. And here I am one year later struggling again ). 3. Doing nofap for entire life and never getting addicted to Porn. (it caused me loots of trouble like insomnia, social anxiety, depression, but worst that I became insensitive to anything everything just became boring. You remeber that excitement you felt at Christmas when young? That's what I want to get back that I lost) 4.Being mgtow monk. (you have 3X money and time and energy than you will ever have with children and wife. 5. Never getting addicted to social media. ( causes me anxiety) 6. Money isn't everything. 7. Being myself and not being toxic. (ruined my relationship with my best friend now we are enemies.) 8. Thinking for myself. 9. Finding this channel and other improvement channel sonner.

I am staunch follower of teachings of Buddha and the biggest takeaway for me is: Buddhism isn't the solution to your problem, but you are. It's not a means to an end, but it's the end. To love yourself as who you are and others as who they are. There's so much suffering. Acceptance is the only way forward.

Used to go meditating at a Diamond Way Buddhist centre years ago. It was nice up to some point. I was able ignoring rather irritating stuff like being told to imagine how some invisible entity shot a ray of light from its mouth into my mouth... but the stuff that really turned me off was the glaring arrogance of the folks who ran the show. One day I asked if I could bring a friend. They asked me about this friend, his financial background / social status. I responded he was unemployed, but in need of something that stabilizes him, offers him balance. The head-honcho replied: 'Nah, we don't want such people here'. That was the moment I told to myself 'fuck you hyprocritical lifestyle-c*nts'. I never returned... and I have to admit not really missing it. Try stoic philosophy. Combine it with some meditation. We don't really need actual Buddhism here. Just look at actual Buddhist countries... the people there aren't really more balanced than we are. It's even the contrary: They (the average Joe) often are highly narcissistic and brutal. Furthermore..just look at how animals factually are treated in Buddhist countries...forget about the romanticizing crap you saw in movies like 7 days in Tibet. It was lifestyle propaganda for a naive western audience desiring something exotic Christianity lost ages ago - the spiritual core.

I enjoy how Alan Watts explains anxiety. Which is having "thoughts about thoughts about thoughts" from a mind that isn't meant to think about itself in that way; much like a person who speaks but never listens. Its a vicious oscillation and feedback loop. The "go with the flow" technique is also something he has mentioned. instead of going against your nature flow along with it; see where the extreme takes you. And honestly how trustworthy is a mind that's overcritical of itself? If one can't trust themselves but that's coming from a mind that can't trust itself. Its a paradox and a double-bind. The "worst possible thing" is an illusion that your mind has projected and is causing anxiety. It will take over your reality if you let it. You can easily become what you think and speak.

Your friends...your body and your job are all yours but certainly they are not you.Keep some distance from them and dont identify yourself with them.They are accessories but its not you.If you do this you will find some significant balance and the feeling of suffering will gradually go away.Nothing that belongs to somone else and even to you should determine how you feel within.

If I'm understanding, it seems that a key component to this philosophy is to observe without judgement. This is new to me, as I had a habit of thinking 'this behavior is sloth, therefore it is bad' instead only observing what is going on. This will take some practice. At this stage, I still find value in judgment, so I am not sure how i can hold both of these beliefs.

Informative video but no practical steps and too simplified. Secondly anxiety is a chemical imbalance in the brain--the firing and misfiring of neurons and synapses in the brain. Thirdly "If the problem cannot be solved worrying will do you no good" but no solution is the cause of worrying. You are right--Meditation is the solution--will watch your other videos. Best wishes.

Kids arent born with anxiety because anxiety is a conditioned response, developed over time, through contact with an external environment. It is the environment that conditions us as children to have anxiety as adults. When i look back on my childhood and the trauma i was subjected to it makes perfect sense that i would develop anxiety later in life. Its important to keep in mind the Buddha suffered zero trauma as a child, and didnt grow up in poverty. In fact he grew up in extreme luxury and was raised by a family who LOVED him and WANTED him. If the Buddha had been repeatedly traumatized as a child, and grew up being UNWANTED and UNLOVED, guaranteed we would not be hearing about the Buddha today. Any thoughts?
@HeraldandDonut
@HeraldandDonut 5 жыл бұрын
Well we most likely still would have the Buddha today because when he was born he was destined to become a wealthy king or a great spiritual leader. He became a spiritual leader even though he had everything in his childhood, so if he was exposed to trauma in childhood he probably would have still become a spiritual leader. But your point is really interesting. Also keep in mind that trauma is everywhere, even in wealthy royal families who have everything, kids can still experience anxiety/trauma due to other factors like family dynamics etc
