Buddhist in America- Ryan Hayashi

Ryan Hayashi explains how the lowest point in his life-facing a felony drug charge in high school-became the starting point for a great transformation. Using his Buddhist practice of chanting nam-myoho-renge-kyo, Ryan uses the suffering caused from his troubled youth to understand the suffering of others. Upon graduating college he enters the highly selective program Teach for America, and teaches at a alternative high school in Anthony, New Mexico, where he teaches and empowers the kind of at-risk youth he himself was just a few years ago.
This series follow members of the Buddhist organization, SGI-USA, as they share their real life stories of practicing Buddhism in America.

as one of pioneer (12/1/68) members of SGI-USA, I viewed your video Ryan with great hope for the future of America and great pride in the foundations we built. Your experience was solid proof of the validity of Nichiren Buddhism the way we practice it in the SGI with our Mentor, Daisaku Ikeda. I loved this! I was an art teacher in Detroit for twenty years because a great teacher, Dr. Reynaldo Ruiz, from NM encouraged me to apply for the bilingual teacher program. Good experience. I couldn't help thinking about the madness of laws that turn you into a criminal for altering your consciousness with a plant - something people do with alcohol every day, and something that is a part of exploring and growing up. While Ryan used this experience to deepen his faith, he should never have been arrested in the first place. I hope that young people will take the opportunity to rid this madness from society in the future.

There's nothing wrong with smoking marijuana. As a matter of fact it's good for you and it kills cancer cells. I chant nam-myoho-renge-kyo everyday. But I think the anti-marijuana thing is just an Asian culture thing. Because there's a reason why it's becoming legal in America. It's good for you.
