I know this nun and two of the men in the video. This nun had enormous respect as a spiritual practitioner/ yogini in the Everest region, and her living conditions were just that small tiny hut and her nunnery was extremely poor, made from rocks and wood by hand. Food (perhaps only one basic meal per day) would be put at that window for her. No toilets, showers, phones, electricity, or heating through the Everest winter. Being women in the community that nunnery received little to no support or respect. Highly respected masters would pay their respects to her if in Everest region. I am happy that some western women/ org was helping this nunnery in recent years, however it was badly affected by the earthquake. I have to say I laugh to see the contrast from her purity, to two more prideful intellectual men and how she sweetly cuts through that. Sadly she passed a few years ago. There are so few left like her, so utterly devoted and non materialistic. Please visit this Devoche nunnery if in Everest region, go to morning puja and have tea and a chat, make a donation in the box in the shrine room if you are able (or not just visit!).

So you know, I was the 100th like on your well meaning and beautiful comment, so there is a time date stamp for the first 100. Oh I wonder how she made it through those winters without the hut being insulated 🙏🏼🫶🏼 people should have financially supported the nunnery more while she was alive. Why wait till people die to do good?

How extraordinary. How wonderful. Samsara is filled with countless suffering beings. The objective of Buddhists is to achieve enlightenment in order to help liberate all sentient beings from their suffering. She is much closer to achieving this final goal than most of us. May she bestow blessings upon us all, and may I have the good fortune to practice in the same way.

Very beautiful heart this woman has, so many years of practicing wishing happiness for all beings must fill one with such compassion, joy and love for all beings, her level of detachment is extraordinary, an inspiring being. So much mantra must make for her to have such a One-Pointed mind, clear mind. And in my experience, Every word she spoke touched my heart.

As Tibetans, we were born to study dharma and all my family believes in Buddhism. I moved to the state although I'm still questioning all methods and religions and the relation between the universe and human beings, seeing their genuine conversation and warm heart gestures is fundamentally different than what I see every day. We shall all practice compassion regardless of our believes and where we live. ❤🙏

@shadowmover63 according to legend, the Buddha was not going to teach humans because he almost believed they were beyond saving. A being or spirit came to him and begged him to share what he realized with the world and so instead of staying quiet for the rest of his life, he decided to teach and share what he realized. I say "he" as a place holder because his avatar was Guatama after realizing buddhahood, he went beyond the opposites, beyond duality, beyond Gautama.

I've seen a talk form the narrator within this video. He's unbelievably full of knowledge and insight into the world and how much suffering is created by us as consuming inhabitants. This video is so inspirational. Often times, as a Buddhist who follows Tibetan tradition but isn't of Tibetan ethnic descent, I think that my practice is too weak, and that I need some highly advanced teachings straight from a Rinpoche in Drepung monastery. This Nun is a living testimony that the simplest of practices bring about the highest states of inner change, thus enlightenment. Really great practitioner as well as Venerable Matthieu Richard. Highly inspiring masters!

Just consider that through this one National Geographic documentary she has shared this message with more people than what most of us will ever do in our lives. You are 100% correct. Those who’ve been trained in tantric meditation, those who’ve met awakened Buddha’s, they would never question such a life choice, not for a second. Most feel inspired by those on long retreats, because they know what it means to do so, they know what deep states of meditation do for mind. Tantric meditation 2,3,4 times a day are common practices.

Talking about the concept a mysterious living being, it stucks in your mind, it makes you suffer, keep you thinking about that concept. The most important thing in life is you, just do you mindfully so there shall no god, evil can defeat you or destroy you. You're what you're, you're the universe. @@SuperLazyCatTheravada Buddhism places an emphasis on renunciation, it is Mahayana Buddhism that encourages enlightenment for the benefit of others. That being said, plenty of Theravada practitioners ARE helping out. Just because you watched a 4 minute video doesn't mean you know her and how much she has or has not helped. I guarantee she has helped more than you, who leave toxic comments on youtube in beautiful videos. You and those who support your ignorant statement may continue enjoying a life of indulgence and judging others for 'not helping', as the average person does very little to help. In fact with such a closed mind how are you helping, when the best way to help others is to be open, friendly, and so on to family, strangers, and so on? Even if you think she wasted her life, guaranteed she's happier and more at peace than you or anybody leaving such comments will ever be. Those of us leaving nice comments are doing so because we have had a taste of what it's like to experience spiritual feelings, I wish you the best in discovering that. Except everyone is a zealot atheist these days and closing themselves off while they brag about being superior. Good luck.

I felt such enormous gratitude, out of reflex I folded my hands in front of my heart and began crying tears of joy. And those tears just became more and more intense the longer the video went, making me re-realize so many truths, like the simple fact that I know at least my own self good enough to understand that I have grown to receive her blessings and the emotions carried with them. Some earlier version of myself would have not been as deeply touched or would have maybe even called her life a waste of time, believing in nothing but the cold hard 3d reality I was living in. I was never one to formulate any such hateful comments or anything, but to myself I might have thought that. And that made me cry even more. I want to make it at least a daily habbit to follow in her footsteps to pray for and bless every human and every being. It has been my deepest desire in my subconscious for as long as I can think for people to understand and be kind to one another, even in times of disagreement to meet each other as members of a team, trying to reach the same goal of not suffering and experiencing every moment as fully as it presents itself to us. Even if it is "just" in a tiny hut doing "nothing" but praying. Bless you all! May the good hearts of humanity unite us once again to make us re-remember who we are at the core. Love. The all.

Beyond eating and sleeping, Tantric meditation is the single most impactful, beneficial life process a human can undertake. It’s completely modified my life by dissolving mind processes that carried no benefit, quieting (most unhealthy) aspects of the discursive aspects of the mind, connected me more closely to groups of amazing people, and dissolved so much of the attachment and aversion I carried around with me. I have literally become a more effective, genuine, caring beneficial being, and I am so grateful for every being that’s carried these teachings and methods forward for thousands of years, I owe them my life. People that enjoyed this wonderful video might want to check out the movie "Wandering But Not Lost" about Mingyur Rinpoche. He is a senior monk who leaves the monastery, does a retreat from the monastery basically, for TWO YEARS. Part of that time he spends in a cave, but the other part is out and about with people in the world. At the end (spoiler) he says, now he's truly at home wherever he is, so simple but so amazing. It's a little hard ro find, you have to rent the movie, but well worth it, amazing footage and personalities as well as his story and teachings.

I was in Nata monastery in Tingri area. She had two younger sisters who were nuns. She was a beautiful young nun who did wear clean robes. I escaped Tibet in 1959 to Namche Bazaar area. I learned later that she had to run away to Tibet from her village suitor lama Dakpa. Lama followed her up to Tingri where met a Tibetan young lady. Initially she hid herself in Tethung village from there she went to Nata nunnery to take refuge in Buddhist. I admire her simple life & high thinking about Buddhism. She was the nun of 20th century. Let us bless by her.

This lovely woman has spent 45 years projecting love and peace into the collective consciousness. Her compassion, and of others like her, is a big part of how our world is able to change for the better. We all create from mind, and when we are caught in the turmoil of mind we create chaos and suffering. I believe if we truly knew the sacrifice of these nuns and monks we would honor them as heroes of mankind.

You can find enlightenment and become a bodhisattva in any skill, although Monks can find it through their faith others can find it through skills which they can help others. My passion is Art and hopefully through my practice over several lifetimes I hope I can attain enlightenment and help others. The passion for my skill allows me to conquer all addictions and sometimes I can retreat for days doing what I love, and I believe she’s doing it in her own way. Although I can do it for for days I am still attached to the human material world whereas I believe she is able to rid herself from the material world much like the great Buddha, hence why she can live in solitude in peace.

Sitting somewhere for more than 1 minute without moving terrifies people - and especially now with people so deeply immersed in the Internet and suffering anxiety from FOMO - fear of missing out. It is very challenging to be still and not believe the mind, to allow everything to come and go and just sit, be still, not doing, just observing without wanting and not wanting, the body starts to freak out and its uncomfortable, the mind clings to an identity to 'be someone' so sitting and not 'becoming' is the practice and allowing what comes to come.

I dont really know, what to say. The most beautiful hearts in the world, should not have ever had to prove themselves. Its always too greater sacrifice. I was imagining what I would ask her if I was standing at her door, then I realized, she said it all. It makes me ashamed, and I feel both respect and sadness. It makes realize the pointless-ness of almost everything I do. Now I understand what Hanh means by making everything a rite. Awakened Mind, Awakened Heart. I feel blessed.

@graycam a good question. one has to decide (constantly when conditions change) which actions would be most effective. A person more or less has an idea about his/her own abilities and what they can do best. Taking mother theresa's life as an example, we can say this nun grew up in a very different environment and was equipped with very different skills. They both chose paths where their determination could bring them to dealing positively with the suffering of others although the routes differ.

- Solitary retreat = she retreats alone, not in group, communicates only to few of those who help her with daily needs. This is the first time she accept talking to the guest. - The venerable Matthieu Ricard was a French scientist (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthieu_Ricard) - To those who doesn't understand Tibetan Buddhism: Yogi/Yogini like her wishes to attain enlightenment, but vow to come back to help others (Bodhisattva). She must sacrifices her entire life to the retreat to archive enlightenment swiftly, which allows her to help others million times more effective than being just an ordinary person. The Buddhist Sangha work on a bigger picture. The ultimate goal is to help all sentient beings in all 6 realms. That's the motivation of a mahayana buddhists, and not looking for a "paradise" just for themselves. - Question: How do you define happiness? Living in a luxury life? having a lot of money?

@graycam 1. Vajrayana Buddhists believe that instead of merely combating the superficial manifestations of suffering (war, mental illness, rape, poverty) this woman is destroying the root causes of these things within herself. Also, her prayers may generate of supernatural help so that she is able to remotely do more for sentient beings in that little hut than Mother Theresa. Or, in my view, she is not separate from Mother Theresa; they're like two hands of the same body.

I see that some people here are confused about a Buddhist's life. She is not wasting her life, she is just living it a different way. Maybe by your diluted and society driven standards, she is wasting her life, but to her, this is what makes her the happiest. Living free from all attachments, taking as little as possible provisions from the people but then sharing the dharma in return. We youtubers, we sit here and watch other people's lives as ours go by and that my friends is a waste of life.

Au contraire ~ as last sentence implies ... what? Doing so is absolution only for the infirm? There isn't a day in my life that I'm not grateful for the Internet as it brings all of humanity closer, yes, even discord; as even the sharing of thoughts is a blessing whether spoken aloud or chanted in solitude.

@@jeanneserrano3397Sorry, but I can’t agree. The Internet is just another way to waste your life… just with more opportunities to talk about your wasted life, and to pretend that you are not wasting your life. It also affords you the luxury of no-consequences attacking of others. Unless it is being used for Dhamma or Dhamma related content, the Internet is not very different from a chat in a pub or a conversation on the phone. It is just a tool. Most people will use this tool for sense gratification. So it is not so different from any other communication device or social opportunity, except that it is more pervasive and permissive. The Internet is like the ghost-reflection of most minds: confused, deluded, addicted, and noisy.
