Guys… I’m familiar with sleeving cylinders. If the machine shop doesn’t want a zillion dollars to do it, that’s what we will do. Also, this is true year round, but it’s especially important today - my channel exists in an alternate universe where politics don’t exist. Any comments that blur the line between these two universes *WILL* be deleted. I appreciate you, but I don’t want to know how you vote. This is my sand box, don’t poop in it. Thanks.

I had a hot 283 Chevy in the 90s. It dropped a valve at 7200 rpm. Messed up #8 pretty bad. Block was already .060 over with trw foraged pistons. Machine shop sleeved #8 and it was back up n going. Fun little motor. Surprised a lot of guys on the street with that set up.

I can understand that. That would be a real score. Years ago, I knew an older guy who used to race a 55 Chevy with a 265 engine. He told me he used to shift it at 10,000 RPMs. Small bore short stroke engine. He used to build a lot of wild sbc engines back in the 60s and 70s

Jamie send it to the machine shop and put a sleeve in that bore and machine out to 30 thou, my 318 has 3 in it due to the rust in the bores , it runs fine. And remember don't buy a donor car from the Australian outback that was in a flood 30 years ago. Don't waste a 273 , over here they sell for good money.

It will be cool to see what the 273 will do. My brother had one long ago and unfortunately, it went to a scrap yard. The engine was freshly built before he got it and the car it was in had an incident with a busted fuel line and a spark. The engine looked fine, but he never got it into his Dart.

JAMIE Got 2-273 one fresh just broke in and one waiting for a rebuild. I'm trying to find a 4 barrel intake for it, and of course, it's a 66 with the old bolt angle. Thought of putting a newer 273 heads, and then it is easy to find an intake. But around here, it's just as hard to find heads as it is for an intake

I really like the idea of the 273 in the late 60’s A body sized car. I always thought that was a perfect setup for around town coupe. Just a nice sporty car, perfect sized for a small V8. Always bugged me that Plymouth didn’t stick with those cars because today a similar sized car with a v8 is a luxury coupe and big money. Modern premium brands have a coupe with a V8 , and Plymouth was doing it years ago and anybody who had one loved them. Today a Lexus GS 350f is a good comparison .

The Chevy 265 had a 3" stroke and the Mopar 273 had a 3.31" stroke. That's almost a 5/16" difference. That doesn't sound like a lot, but in the grand scheme of things, it may be. I'm not an authority on that. I can say that back in the 80s I had a 70 Chevy 350 4 bolt main block in which I installed a stock cast crank and rotating assembly from a 68 350. I may have used better rod bolts but I can't remember. I used to shift that engine at 7,500 RPMs when I raced it. I'm not familiar with your 273's rods but who knows
@DeadDodgeGarage26 күн бұрын
I would love to find a “destroker” crank as was used to build the 305 T/A racing engine. With a stroke of 2.96”, it would be right in that neighborhood. I have a nice set of new aftermarket rods, but they are still standard I-beams.

@DeadDodgeGarage26 күн бұрын
Yeah, I'd be shooting myself in the foot there. Unless I have Dan re-drill the intake holes, which he offered to do... The real reason I don't want to go to the Magnums for this build is I want to retain the shaft rockers. My goal is high RPM, and the shaft setup is just about the best you can get for that.

That’s exactly the plan! And worry not, because those slant bars will be cranked sky high once the drivetrain is back in. That’s the stance I’m going for. @AllensAutomotiveReparations26 күн бұрын
Jamie maybe you have forgotten this but there is an old quote ..... it goes something like there is no replacement for displacement ........ your obsession with Chrysler's smallest cubic inch motors IE I think I'll turbo a slant six but wait lets make it the 170 cube engine for fun (shaking my head and thinking "why") next up I want to drag race a 1st Gen Barracuda with a high revving small block (OK one thinks) but wait I also want to tunnel ram it with multiple carbs (ok that's cool) but wait I want to use the 273 because they are harder to get parts for and I want to use stock heads and pistons if possible (again the head shake) from out here in keyboard land it appears you want to spend a lot of time and some money to achieve mediocre to dismal results but I suppose there is some reasoning in the " why do what everyone else is or has done when you can do what everyone says doesn't work just to be different and see if they really tried or are talking out their a$$" it can be fun to be the guy who doesn't follow and does what they want for no other reason than because you can. Good luck and thanks for keeping us engaged and wondering WTF.
@DeadDodgeGarage26 күн бұрын
You tell me if the results are dismal. I don’t think they will be. The entire point is to do more with less. It’s the essence of hot rodding - which is what I’m trying to capture here. This pursuit of greatness where there shouldn’t be any is just about my *only* interest when it comes to “go fast” stuff. And a lot of people get that. The 170 is actually a great choice for boost. It’s the exact same bore as a 225 with a shorter stroke - IE, lower piston speed at high RPM than the 225. It is an over square engine, just like a muscular V8, and that is the better recipe for power production. I think the 273 *could* actually be a great choice for RPM. Tiny bore = lower frictional losses. I think the trick is sizing everything to the tiny bore. If you’re at all familiar with Studebaker’s high performance R-series engines, you know where this could go. Limitations are an incredible driver of creativity. The same is especially true in the art world, and in music production. You work with what you have, and come up with creative solutions. I don’t need to replicate any other build. If I do that, I will learn nothing but how to copy someone else’s work. I want to do what I want to do. I want to be myself. Yeah, you get it.
@AllensAutomotiveReparations26 күн бұрын
@@DeadDodgeGarage I do get it people have refused to give up on the 289 Ford and build them for fun hi revving applications and putting Turbos and building 200-300 cubic inch straight sixes has a huge following. I'm more mild daily driver than wild lets see what it'll do before it breaks. Hence my thinking a mild 318 will be equal to what the slant can produce and be more reliable and a mildly over built 360 will produce more usable reliable power than your 273 idea. I get your ideas are more fun and less main stream though. I do look forward to seeing what you can accomplish and it appears you are getting lots of comments and interest so I'm sure that too is a positive.

I keep seeing and hearing a '66 Barracuda and I'm not seeing one. I have owned 2 '66 Barracuda's, "64 Barracuda, '63, '65 & '66 Valiant's. What I see on the lift looks like an Austraillian cross breed, the grill is similar to a '66 Dart, the body lines really don't look right, and where is that big rear glass window ?
@DeadDodgeGarage14 күн бұрын
You can’t see the window because the car is on the lift. I’m sorry I forgot to say “this is my 1966 Barracuda with a 1966 Dart nose” like I do in most other videos, because I learned that people come into this not having seen any of the videos I’ve been making about it for years and get confused.

I have a friend that has a parts car Dart station wagon with an original 273 that's never been molested, and it's getting scrapped. I need to check whet year it is, I think 1966.... I'm running up to Washington from NorCal in December, If it's the right one, I'll throw it on the trailer and it'd be free.... What's the casting # you need??

Oh, I saw your other comment first. That's what I need. I responded to the other one with my email. Please and thank you!

@@DeadDodgeGarage Hey, Jamie, didn't see the other reply, but I'll put your name on it and yard it out. I'm in NorCal but have a lot of old friends in Washington state (Longview, Raymond, and Kent) that I visit regularly, half the time pulling a trailer, so It's no big deal to haul it up there. I'm huge fan of high winding small block v8's, and everything I ever owned has three pedals, LOVE this project !!

Can you put the 273 crank into a 360 block?
@mikusmaximus750726 күн бұрын
You can with bearing spacers. Callies used to sell.
@DeadDodgeGarage26 күн бұрын
That would be interesting. I have read about the bearing spacers as mentioned by MikusMaximus but I've never seen them in use. Here's the thing, though - if you want a 360 with the stroke of a 273, what you actually want is a 340, as the 273/318/340 cranks are all the same (barring the forged/cast difference of course.) The stock 340 bore is the same size as a .040 over 360. And if finding a 340 block is challenging, well... find a really good 318 block to massively overbore. It's been done before. For my own education if nothing else, I have an interest in working with the small bore size. Working within limitations is where I find my fun.

At 60 over what are the end cubes or cc’s?
@DeadDodgeGarage25 күн бұрын
A .060 overbore brings it to 282.4 CI. Not a substantial difference.
@stannelson258227 күн бұрын
When all of this is done can you do a comparison build to a 360 and do all the same work. You know turtle vs hair test. Jamie it’s a joke relax. You will have fun and so will we following along.

Oh hell yeah! If this thing made 320 horsepower, that would be a *huge* victory.
@racer658327 күн бұрын
Yeah what are your plans for the w block that Tom said you are to receive????????? It does smell that those sweet head are junk but here's idea take your nice original 273 do the .030 treatment take those forged pistons and soak em in evapo rust, then find a small flat tip screw driver that is slightly rounded at the tip then lightly pry the rings I sure you know how, its wither you want to. Of course I just saying what I would do. But it's yours so do it the way you want. And remember anytime you can save some penny's they become dollars in the future!!!!! Eventually.

I know what to do with the rings. The giant pits in one of them is another matter.

Why not just put a 340 or 360 block I see you broth got a good score at a swap meet as in free parts hop he can track guy down and find the other heads that were not ther hopefully the guy still has and didn’t scrap them

I don’t think we’ll be hearing from that guy. I already built a pretty great 360. Now I’m doing something different.

So, ex-pres. Obama and his wife, walk into a machine shop looking for used engine parts, maybe cores even. The machinist listens politely and then asks, "so will you settle for a core?" "Yep" says Obama and his wife. "What's that on your back yer carrying?" says the machinist. "That? that's Michelle!" (for the sake of clarity and the joke itself, an engine core is also know as a "shell". Obama's wife's name is Michelle... or Chelle, for short. Wait for it... wait... DING!) Happy Holidays!
