Before I get into the description I want to make it clear that I have no affiliation to Sunshine Fishing and have not been paid to make this review. I have not even added affiliate links to the product. The opinions expressed in this video are my honest views on this outfit.
I am often approached to do reviews of products (which is nice) I want the channel to be a resource where people can get an impartial view of products. When I have found things wanting in the past I have given the retailer the option not to publish the videos (I don't have to) this offer has been taken up more than once!
I have not used the rod for a prolonged period but but on the back of this initial review all I can say is how very impressed I was considering the cost of the outfit.
I hope you enjoy the video and I look forward to your comments.

Thanks for that, Lyndsey. It is surprising how some budget/entry level rods are better than one would expect. Its nice that experts like yourself are not to proud to check them out and give an honest opinion. All adds to getting more folk fishing, and that can't be so bad for the sport!

Excellent advice, there are some good rods, reels, lines at less than a ton, my favourite is a Shaky sigma supra. My money goes on good quality flies, that's what the fish see. Tight lines.

Yet more proof that fly fishing does not need to be expensive. You can do it on a budget.

I bought a Greys K4ST for £70 when started fly fishing again, just for river work and lighter tackle, the floating line that came with it is brilliant, i use it everytime I'm out.

Budget gear nowadays is light years ahead of the stuff on the market when I started 36 years ago, the budget stuff now probably compares to some of the best gear back then.

I picked up one of these rigs for my father in law, he was interested in going on a trip with me. I figured, rather than letting him use one of my decent rods to stab onto trees and whip back and forth like he was taming lions, I’d throw away a couple bucks for a sacrificial rod. After the trip, and the ridiculous abuse I anticipated, the rod was still intact, so I ended up using it as my own backup rod!! It’s not pretty enough to impress the fellas on the bank, but the dang thing can throw a bug!! And after hours of getting blanked, I don’t feel guilty for taking a little anger out on my rod……and it somehow keeps performing!

A lot of fly fishing is just fancy kit which is great to own but not essential to go fishing.

Great vid as usual L. Thank you :) I fished Powdermills today and I reckon I took a fish you’d caught n released last week, judging by evidence of a little jaw scar. Didn’t stop it feeding though ! Took fish on a Red Devil and black n gold stalking bug

A first rate review. Not so long ago I spent may £’000s on a Hardy rod. It is a lovely rod which I really enjoy using. But it came with a small label saying “Made in China”. It made me think that much of the price of these top brand rods is perhaps the brand name. Since then I have bought 4 rods from Maxcatch in China , maybe it’s because I’m a bit crap, but I would say each of these rods is really very good and costs a fraction of a flashy name.

A lot to do with branding for sure.

What net (pole and net) do you use, mate? Does it change from bank to boat or stay the same?
@lindsayiflyfish
@lindsayiflyfish Жыл бұрын
It’s an extendable pole with the net head attached and a spike at the bottom. The Wychwood Bankman, it could be used for the boat but to my mind the pole is not long enough.

It's kind of a double edged sword having these packages out there. I like them for beginners but they come at a cost to the sport I suppose. That's my problem, I have become an old crotchety mathom of sorts. With today's technology and available materials, having to spend a great wad of cash to get started is kind of a nice change. I actually still have my first fly rod from 1968. It is an old fiberglass Daiwa. I have the Daiwa reel that I bought seperatley. One day I may tidy it up and use it for Bear Hunting! It is that heavy! There is a Chinese Company called MaxCatch that has been improving their equipment for at least five or six years now. They actually sell a fly line that is too good to believe. It is sold by a company you would know but instead of $130 Canadian it will or does sell for $25 Can via MaxCatch. To be honest I have reservations about making everything easier to access. I won't piss anyone else off and just stick to that. These beginner packages are probably at least as good as the original Carbon graphite rods that first came out. I've bought one or two to try out as my fishing experience grew. Instead of running out and buying a 10 foot two weight for $800 to $1000 I buy much less expensive rods to make sure I actually need one. "Need," being a subjective word! 😂🤣 The only thing I have noticed about these inexpensive rods, is that as I think you pointed out, are not always rated for the right line. Did you ever go to the Sexy Loops website years back? A European fly fishing site with a lot of good information and observations. This same thing was brought up there. The observation was that if you bought a rod weighted as a 4wt say, but it really cast much better with a five or six weight, then that rod was not rated properly and they were trying to get away with misrated rods.rather than provide a properly rated rod. Thankfully this trend has waned as materials became less expensive and Companies like MaxCatch worked to make better equipment for a reasonable price. This is good news in most cases. Do you have a cane rod Lindsay? That is my next thought.
@lindsayiflyfish
@lindsayiflyfish Жыл бұрын
No cane rod for me Kerry, I would like one but can’t justify it for the one or two outings it would get each year. I have visited the sexyloops website, wealth of information. It might have been there that I read about them doing away with the old AFTM rating. The budget kit is ideal for folks wanting to dip their toe into the sport which is a good thing. I always equate it to cars, you can buy a mini and it will get you from London to Edinburgh but I would rather go in a Bentley!
