A viewer within the live video feed asked a question about mounting works on paper onto canvas, that was left open to be answered. I wanted to add a comment that I did an art entry in a city event show one time, where I built a huge wood contraption, and hung my practice art from the whole year all over it. My art from the year was practice acrylic paintings on paper. I came up with the idea to cut simple matching wood boards, the size of the paper. I treated these as a painting board, with an isolation coat of gel medium, to protect against wood acids. I then used acrylic gel medium to paste my paintings on the boards. (And I added hanging hardware by simply gluing wood blocks on the back of the boards, to hold the framing wire hardware.

Felt like I hit the jackpot when I found 3 big and very nice frames at a thrift store. Bought them all. Then I bought canvases in the same size!

I frame my all my work myself including matte cutting. The trick to it is to think about the framing process as you are making your work.

You are so right that it takes hours and hours of consecutive cutting until the skill is down. Who has this kind of time? Plus it sucks up my time that I could be watercolor painting. Great video.

I miss my gallerist ( my gallery closed bc of covid) who was an expert at installing big paintings. For my solo show in 2019 he beautifully hung 6 by 7 feet or 5 by 6 paintings that were very heavily textured. I agree with Lauren about painting the sides, I love doing this to accentuate the sculptural nature of my paintings.

I really appreciated this video. I enjoy the live streams, as analogous to sitting to have a chat with knowledgeable artists. I would also hope for a full fledged art prof lesson on this topic, as she has put forth great videos on other topics. I gain a lot from her 'direct' lessons.... Regarding invitation to comment in the video: I've always been a diy-er. Like I built my own bike trailer, to haul stuff. I learned car maintenance (oil & other fluid changes, lights, minor repairs like hoses, etc). I learned to build my own large painting boards (cradled, with back frame) for $15, that would be $115 or more ready-made; (as I yesterday saw a large stretched canvas at this price). Framing is even more expensive, so paying a framer isn't an option at this stage. This video popped up at the perfect time, while preparing 3 large drawings on paper for a large art event in my city. I didn't think much of the framing, until I have now spent a week doing research, trying to learn all aspects of this task. Cutting mats I have come to decide simply requires the right tool/ setup-- a mat cutter, to hold a very sharp blade steady, & an immobile straight edge--- I have a woodworking straight edge with a built in clamp, so I will use that. Frames can easily be built. I believe I will learn this task--- after recent thoughts of horror, realizing that I could have died crawling under my own car with cheap car jacks, (& have now learned to love car mechanics); in comparison, messing with picture frames seems not so bad at all.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has a hard time making perfect clean not overcut mats. I bought some tools to make frames but was so relieved when you said stretch canvases were okay to just hang without frame. Custom frames are so expensive. The last one I bought was over $500. It looks great but I can't afford to do that all of the time.

The command strips are awesome :) especially the stretched canvas hanger :) I can swap out the stretch canvases easily and quickly. The Command strips for poster works great for artwork on paper, easy to remove without damage to the wall or artwork

I had it custom framed by a professional framer. It was expensive but worth it. I would love to learn to do it myself.

Hi I just tried a new material Stylofoam as frame . It was fun to try but it is quite toxic so I won't use it again.

These live streams are fun to listen to, e.g. while working around the house, but the information density is so LOW that actually listening for information (that I want or need) drives me crazy!

We have been starting to produce 3-10 min. videos which condense info from the live streams if you want all the info in a shorter format, like this 3 min. video kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnSwaqaLmbCmj5Y and this 10 min. video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4q9Y2mopMuppqM -Prof Lieu

For stretched paintings I don't really believe in frames. I think it's a waste of money and a shame not to be able to see the edges of the painting. An exception of course is when the frame is part of the work like with Valerie Hegarty's and Howard Hodgkin's work. For works on paper you really have to frame it to show so the work is protected and the presentation looks professional. The tricky thing that I've been dealing with is my ceramic reliefs which need to be framed and can be wonky shapes.

Everyone has different preferences when it comes to presenting art-- I've had profs who require formal presentation and those who are dead set against it! It's always interesting to see how much presentation affects how the work comes across - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
