Henri Cartier-Bresson said "Your first 10,000 photos are your worst" and it's so true. Practice and knowing your gear is far more important than the latest, greatest (expensive) equipment.

I just came across this video. I have been doing photography for about 20 years. More serious in the last 5 years. I created an Instagram page displaying my photos almost 6 years ago. I bought my first brand new full framed camera in 2015, Canon 6D Mark 1, which I still use as my primary camera. I had a Canon 40D before and just recently sold it. Since the purchase of my 6D, I bought a Samsung NX300 in 2015 new. Now, I have an interest in the older technology cameras. The ones that came out 10 years ago and are considered "old and out-dated" by some people and are no longer great cameras. You are correct when you said there are a lot of great options on cameras that won't bust your wallet. Like the one you use in this video. Those cameras still take amazing photos. I don't use Olympus, but have considered getting an older one to have fun with. I liked this video and you mentioned some really strong points not just for the novice photographer, but telling the beginner there are great options out there if you do your research. Great video and I am now a subscriber. -Craig from the US

9:11 maybe the actual reason you like a small camera, Robin. The difference is you're jacked 💪😆 5:07 this is my favourite from this video, the leading line's beautiful, separate this photo from the usual tourist candid. Whoa, 250 ringgit? I can't find mirrorless that cheap in Jakarta. Should I have a trip to KL instead? 😅

Hi, Robin! I was watching some astrophotography videos using Olympus cameras when I happened to find The Narrowband Channel hosted by Benjamin Chappell. In his particular video entitled "High Resolution Photos of the Moon with Olympus," he paid homage to the popular catchphrase of your videos. At around 2 minutes 58 seconds, you'll hear your name and your catchphrase mentioned. I just thought I'd share this with you. Thanks!

Great video, Robin. I recently purchased an E-M1 mk III and 12-45 F4.0 PRO but I have a couple of older bodies and kit lenses that I still shoot with as well. My oldest camera is a Panasonic GF3...similar to your E-PM-1 and I still like to use it to challenge myself to get the best results I can. Technically, the GF3 is not as good as my E-M1 mk III but I can still get great images from it because the basic principles of good photography still apply no matter what camera you are using.

Good morning from the US! Such lovely images you created prove that one doesn't need the "latest and greatest" gear to create great images. I still have my "antique" E-PL6 that still serves me well. It's the photographer, not the gear, that creates. Thanks for another great video Robin and all the best!

The 8 year old e-pl6 with the 14-150 and VF-4 EVF is one of my favorite cameras. I still shoot it a lot, even though I have newer gear. Small, light, comfortable; it just feels good shooting it, and still gives great images. It's a joy, really.

Great video and images, Robin. I just love my EPM1, that I purchased, after watching your first video on the subject. It came with the 14-42 lens. I have since added the VP-1 view finder and a Panasonic 4/3 - mft adapter, now I can use my 4/3 lenses too. Only issue is, I wish the lowest ISO was 100, but not really an issue.KB

Nice images Robin...& a truth in regard to equipment. It's self-evident really, otherwise there would be no great photography from 10, 20, 30, 40 & 50 years ago, long before equipment standards were where we are today.

This hits home. While I don't shoot M4/3's, I have a similar setup (Sony A6K and a Sigma 30mm f/2.8) that I use outdoors. Took it out for an on-location photoshoot with some fellow photographers. I think 90% of the time, I am getting smirks from the other photographers as well as some models whom I felt is not taking me seriously. Can't blame them, I'm just some random photographer with a "toy like" setup. No big and fancy gear to flex around. But when it boils down to the outputs.. it's your images that does the talking. Side by side, it got them confused who is using who. As Robin stated, it is the photographer who creates the images. One can have the most expensive gear money can buy and still get crappy results. As the old saying goes, there are no bad camera nowadays... just bad photographers.

Love it! Love your advice and your birds are truly awesome. But your results are so much better than mine! As Richard Dreyfuss said in The Competition, "I knew you were good but I didn't know you were THAT good." Aside from your long experience, photographer's eye, and art spirit, I believe that (as you may have mentioned before) you also shoot in RAW exclusively, for color at least. Someday, could you please give a brief overview of your basic post-processing go-to touch-ups? Thank you Robin-sensei.

Sometimes I think my very first digital camera would have been all I ever needed. It was the Minolta Dimage D7i. Then Olympus developed Four Thirds. Everything kept improving, and then they developed Micro Four Thirds. I've never bought the newest camera, though. My "main" camera is the E-M10 Mk I, which I bought refurbished. Most cameras I bought used on eBay, as well as lenses, and hand grips, and so on. I am a bit of an "equipment junkie". I think cameras are beautiful machines. Just a few days ago. I acquired an E-PM2. It fits nicely in my "man bag" along side my IR converted E-PM2, both of which go every where with me.

A couple of years ago my E-M1 and 12-40 PRO broke in an accident, just a week before a holiday in Scotland specifically for photography. My gear was away for repair and I had to use my old E-PL3 and 12-50 zoom instead. Yes, it was a challenge. I entered two photographs shot with that old, entry-level gear into competitions. The judge did not say anything about image quality and the shots did not score lower than what I would usually achieve. - Yes, getting some of those shots took longer. I needed to take a tripod where I would have shot handheld. I had to manually bracket shots for exposure / dynamic range. In the end, thinking more about the process may have made the shots even better, or at least countered the potentially lower image quality.

I have an E-M10 II and bought an E-PM1 as a backup. It's a fun camera, albeit with low-light performance that shows its age. It's pocketable with the Olympus 9mm fisheye body cap lens on it and, though I don't own one (yet), I'd bet the 14-42 pancake. Robin is 100% correct that the E-PM1 is a highly capable camera, as is the 40-150 R a highly capable lens. However, there is one budget-friendly feature that is missing on all Olympus PEN cameras (except the F), and that is focus peaking. Manual primes are the best budget solution to the depth-of-field and low-light limitations of MFT cameras, but using them on my E-PM1 is frustrating because of a low-resolution display and no focus peaking. For people willing to take the dive into manual lenses, I'd suggest that the extra money spent on, say, an E-M10, can be later saved buying manual lenses instead of AF lenses.

yeah. Have a Lumix GF2 and love it. But I'm tempted to upgrade to a GM1 or GX1, maybe an old Olmpus Pen. The new stuff gets bigger and bigger. I would rather have a EV to stick on then a flipping backscreen. If I take a look at prices of the stuff in better condition at ebay it makes me wonder what those product managers at Olympus and Panasonic are doing the whole day... BTW: fantastic place. Anything with a tele will take spectacular pictures as those animals are real beauties/

Just as an aside. I was testing my em5 mark 3 vs the Pen epl10. Same controlled light, same lens, RAW, same distance etc, and Although the Pen had fewer Megapixels and has an older sensor.. When pixelpeeping you actually get slightly higher definition with the epl10, though a little more noise. Making Small text on products just a bit more legible (despite the pixel disparity). I was surprised at how close the picture quality was, different but even (tradeoffs). The EM5 mark 3 has more features and is more customizable though, but I found it interesting non the less. Maybe the EPL10 was playing nicer with the Panasonic 20mm 1.7? Curious how the older 12MP pen cameras compare considering more light per pixel, I think that's something the Black magic pocket 4K optimizes with a bit, considering its only ever doing 4k which is about 8MP on a MFT sensor.

Hello Robin. I’ve been watching your videos for a while as I’ve been looking for a compact kit with telephoto lens. I have in my view locally an E-PM 2 with kit 14-42 and 45-150 R you’re using here with external flash for 200$. But as I was reading on forums, I got worried about the stabilisation of such Olympus cameras. Also the issue of shutter shock I’ve been reading about. Would you say that those are issues to be concerned about or that the E-PM1 or 2 would stabilise the lens well enough at 150mm and shutter shock isn’t an issue? Thank you.

You would miss the ergonomics and controls of the EM5. And you wouldn’t even be saving that much weight or size. I could never go back to the EPM/L series (had the EPL5).

Give a skilled photographer an old rangefinder film camera without a meter, and that person could produce better shots than a bad photographer with very expensive gears. Simple as that.

Meters aren’t as necessary with film because of the wide overexposure latitude. After a year I pretty much stopped taking my meter on outings, and very rarely missed the exposure (under).
