I get asked almost daily when I'm testing the next Orion amp. Well, those who continually ask, here ya go! Today I try out the baby brother of the XTR-2500.1dz, the XTR-1500.1dz. At the time of the video, this amp was available on Amazon for $220 shipped. Who knows what the price will be when you check, but I've been told by Orion this amp is discontinued and will be replaced with a more powerful version. We will get one of those to try for sure! Let's take a closer look at this 1500 watt amp and see how it performs on the Amp Dyno!

Never had any problems with these bad boys. Except getting them all gone along with my Plye pro 15" (x2) Cerwin Vega 6x9 (x4) Audio Art 6-1/4" 3" 1". (X2) Denon? Tape deck$750 Yup that's was all in a 1985 Nissan King Cab slammed with one of first air ride. Toyota 4Runner 4x4 rims 15x7 running BFGoodrich 195/50 R15 yup it was bad to bone and stollen in 1987. I was 17 years old bought it all myself. Worked since I was 9 years old. Insurance Co. gave me $3700 and got my truck back and painted it better than it was before. And you know I did the system all over even better. All HiFonics & Redline pushing 3kwatts easy. Ahhh the good old days.

I bought the 2500.1dz after your original Orion test 2 years ago, and mine is still going very strong to this day. I can confirm that they put out tons of uncertified power. I still love the way it sounds on 2 American Bass XR 12's. Very strong for just a couple 12's in a ported box, on a $350 Orion amp.

If it wasn't for your original Xtr 2500.1D video, I never would had known how good the newer Orion amps would be. 2+ years later, it's still as powerful and reliable as it was brand new. I'm positive I could hit 150db with this amp if I had more, or bigger subs hooked up. The pair of 12's isn't quite enough cone area for 150db in an SUV

It's great to see old bassheads still with the hobby. I got my start in 1985, bought Kenwood's first CD player. Had major problems with it skipping and freezing up. Brought it back to CRAZY EDDIE'S three times and still had problems, got loud (and pissed off) and they gave me a newer model with FM radio. No more problems. I'm back in the game, recently purchased a XTR2500.1Dz and a XTR750.4, still in the process of installing all new gear.

Both amps were really good! That second amp was a stunner! Pretty ain’t said jack! Very well made, needed some 0 gauge power and ground with 4 gauge speaker wire hookups to be super sweet! Loved that 1/4 pipe vid on the front! Go BigD!

Since you have been around car audio for a while you might remember Orion's end-covers. They were installed in succession between amps to make your build look better, it was like having a continuous amplifier no matter how many you had, it looked great. Don't know if they still sell those though. I started installing Orion back in 1987 and I loved them so much I saved up and bought a (NEW $650) HCCA 225 from my employer. It went through seven different cars and trucks I had until 2019 my S10 got broke into and the thieves basically took everything but the seats and steering wheel. I wonder if they knew what it really was. We used to demo THAT amp in a van we (JM Mobile Electronics in SoCal) built. The van had 26 amps powering 24 Cervin Vegas, the other two went to the tweets and mids. IT ROCKED!!!!!!! Usually to the sound tract of TOP GUN

I purchased one of the Orion 1500.1 amps about 3-4 years ago from an online dealer. It took me a few months before I installed it and it sounded weak when the subsonic filter was on. After turning off the filter the sound was much better. The main issue I had with it was it would only play for around 30-45 minutes before shutting off. It didn't matter if I had it at 1 ohm, 2 ohm or 4 ohm, it just always shut down after less than an hour and even a low volumes. I later purchased the xtr 4000.1 and never once had an issue with it. Not sure what the problem was with the 1500.1, but the 4000.1 was/is a beast and I recommend that amp.

I remember going to a car audio show in Ocala FL back in 1986 or 87. The loudest vehicle there was an S10 Blazer with a bunch of Coustic 380 amps. He had (8) Gauss 15" pro subs in an isobaric enclosure. He would throw his wallet up on the roof and it would do a few flips until it flew off. Pretty impressive for the time. The most interesting thing at the show was a local guy in a pickup. He flipped the seats forward to expose a pair of old school Pyle Driver subs and what looked like a "bread board" home built amplifier with no cover on it. Several years later it occurred to me that he was one of the US Amps founders. I should have paid more attention...

FWIW, the birth sheet on the Orion, that test is over the entire range the amp covers. It's not just a 40hz tone, more likely white or pink noise. It's not surprising it has a higher output than you're seeing at 40hz.

That 170 amp pull at 1500 watts 2 ohm. That 66.6% efficiency is why the amp is so affordable. Not terrible by any means though. This amp outputs a tremendous amount of power but be aware your power supply needs to be beastly.

I was a teenager in the beginning of the 90s and can remember Orion gear fondly. I haven't messed with them since the late 90s as they seemed to go downhill at the time. They had been owned unless mistaken by GE or something like that. Their HCCA amps were amazing then. I had a pair of 12" DVC subs that I LOVED. I just don't think that I would risk buying any of their gear anymore.

I loved the Coustic DR test. These older amps might not have the same power as today's tech, but there's a chance some of us might have some of this stuff lying around that we don't use because we don't think it will keep up. That amp made plenty enough power and I would use on if I had it. Even if only for mids/highs.

No surprised in the least by these results... Orion is no joke in the make power department... Sound quality is still respectable... I do have an idea for a video! How about a US Acoustics Mike vs the Orion 1500? Better yet!!! Do the amp dyno drag race but then do an actual all variables equal SPL run like on the old school SPL challenge... Then maybe some qualitative listening comparison... Just a thought.

Orion amps have never let me down!!! I ran my Cobalt 260 at 2ohm bridged hard all day back in 95 and STILL use that amp to this day. I wonder what it really is putting out because it never had a problem pushing my 2 12" xtr's

Look at the Orion test voltage. That's where your discrepancy is. They rate at 12.6V where you're testing 13.8-14.4V.

I'm outta heeeeere!!! Back in the day coustic I always thought was low grade and was very easy to find used for next to nothing and I always passed, I had to have my Orion or Rockford, etc... But now I wish I would have snatched up all that i passed up, I'm the big dummy now lol

big D when i was younger im 52 know ,but in 1978 i believe this friend had a complete pioneer im talking head unit 3 gm 120 40 watt amp for the component speakers lots of toy's you can hear this guy 1/4 mile away this is really old school,at the time i don't think there was much better,i mean the gm/were rated at 60 watts per channel and this was before sub woofers,then the best bass was out of the trunk of a 72 nova,or any car with a big trunk,just sayuing i really like the way you do things,peace out.

1trucavalier I had taramp amp hd3000 and I had a xtr1500 original laying down, I pick it up and did some test and this amp almost blow my speaker so I went and got another... now I have 2 xtr each playing @1 ohm on American bass xfl 😍

Remember those old "Crossfire" amps.. They used to sell those at the flea market and swap meet car audio hawkers all over Los Angeles and Orange Counties in the mid late 90s.
