I had one a few years back and did about the same as you getting it running. One thing is that is it does not say Galaxie anywhere on the car.... It's just a 1968 Ford XL, but yes it is a Galaxie body. Glad to see the revival of this cool looking full size car.

My teenage learning experience of being a hometown mechanic… 18 or 19 years old and a302 V8 in a cougar. Lotta fun watching you work on the same engine. My sister also had a Fairlane like that fast back with a 302.

That was Mike’s dad’s first car, too. We drove Mike around it when he was little.
@SFHCommish_15 сағат бұрын
@ that was my ill-advised attempt at building a cheap teenage hot rod. My engine couldn’t handle a 4barrel even though I bought a 600 Holly and headers to boot. Then I also found the headers didn’t fit because it had power steering. There’s a long arm underneath the engine that connects to the steering pump, and the headers just went right where that rod was. It was impossible to put them on, even though I tried anyway and even banged and even dented them just to make them fit. Not a good idea.🤣

In 1973 I bought my own first car a 1970 Ford XL fastback 429 bucket seat center council with slapstick was a hell of a nice car for a young man. Ran like a bat out of hell just couldn't stop it dam drum brakes all the way around didn't want to drive it on rainy days.

I do like your dad's valve spring compressor tool. I had one that was stamped steel about same gauge as a stamped rocker, worked same way and you're right, it's a lot nicer than the screw-down spring compressor. The seals weren't as bad as I'd have expected. I've seen chunks of them get into the oiling system and lock up an oil pump on a 289. Guess they were replaced whenever that engine was gone through.

Love to have one of those! I do have its relative: a 68 Galaxie 500 former police car. Yes, it rips. I love classic sleepers. Nothing beats steelies and dog dish hub caps, as far as wheels go. Of course, a beefy engine ya gotta have. Grannie drives it to church, yet it yanks decent numbers on the strip. That XL is beat up and beautiful at the same time.

It's technically just a "Ford XL" or sometimes described as "XL by Ford". There are no Galaxie emblems on it. This car may have been sold during Ford's spring 1968 "See the Light" sale, which included a V8 engine (302), air conditioning and tinted glass. I believe the stripe was also part of that package but I cannot confirm it. Hard to believe, but the standard engine in this big car was Ford's 240 six.

DON'T run any kind of flushing chemicals/diesel in the engine!! Just add a quart of ATF to the oil! The ATF gradually breaks down the sludge over a couple oil changes. The engine flushing crap can break loose big chunks that can plug up the oil pump pick up screen! That can destroy an otherwise good engine. Save running diesel in the crank case for the GM's!!
@MrTonyPiscatelle4 сағат бұрын
Where was all that air flow going when you were changing the valve seal boots. I say you got valves that are burnt or not sealing very well.
