The estimate button copies in the actual figures from a previous period. Like, "if this year goes exactly like last year, this would be the budget", and then you edit it from there. So for the 8 month budget in the video, you'd need at least 8 months of historical data to fill it all in automatically.

It would be useful to have a tutorial on how to create custom budgets. The GC wiki says one can program in Scheme to do that, but I have yet to see a compelling example in the wild and/or a tutorial.

What do you mean by 'create custom budgets'? Do you mean a budget report? That would involve Scheme and some other language which is not friendly to new developers. I think that section of GnuCash needs to be rewritten to allow for modern UI languages to interact with the data files. KMyMoney does a very good job on their budget feature. Give that a try and let us know what you think. I have used both and GnuCash is nice and more ideal for those with business accounting needs but for home use, KMyMoney has more features. I just wish KMyMoney's reports were Business style reports. Like the Cashflow statement. Gnucash has it right, KMyMoney needs to fix it. Other than that, I like both. GnuCash does not allow for Tagging transactions. (tagging all transactions for a project or a trip is great!)

Hi! Thanks for the video. I struggle to understand how to interpret the figures shown as ACTUAL in the BUDGET REPORT. Income and expenses are obvious but I don't understand Asset and Liability. It's neither the total amount nor the net change versus last period. How should I read this?

Assets are what you have (like savings), liabilities are what you owe (like unpaid credit card debt).
