-- PRESENTATION: INTERVIEW GUILLAUME ERARD PART 1 --
Guillaume Erard is a permanent resident of Japan with over 30 years of experience in Japanese martial arts. He holds the 5th Dan in Aikido from the Aikikai World Headquarters in Tokyo. Erard is also one of the few non-japanese to hold a 3rd Dan in Daito-ryu Aiki-jujutsu, the art that Aikido's own founder, Ueshiba Morihei, studied under the legendary master Takeda Sokaku.
Erard gives Aikido lectures and seminars throughout Europe and he is one of the most prominent researchers on Aiki and its history in activity today. He has studied under many of the most senior masters in Japan and abroad and has conducted in-depth interviews with many of them in order to promote the public understanding of the art.
Considering he is a supporter of Seido since its inception almost 10 years ago, we decided to sit down with him to find out what drove his incredible enthusiasm for the art and how exactly he puts into practice all that he has learned from his masters so far.

19:36 The concept of internal power is Chinese in origin, and it started of from Taoist obsession of seeking immortality, or at least longevity. The Japanese has something similar to Taoism as well, but it was more like a hybrid of Buddhism, Shintoism, and Confucianism. I believe that Kobudo masters simply developed efficiency to such an extent that it looks effortless, hence possessing "internal power". A lot of things that O Sensei said about being One with the Universe, and connecting Heaven and Earth, sounds to me very Taoist in nature. Maybe it's already part of Japanese culture.

Is there a difference between the relation of Aikikai standard aikido and Daito Ryu and Iwama Aikido and Daito Ryu? Thank you

Forget the art, it's the jitsu. It'd seem like a whole lot of training the body to be sensitive, yielding to force, feeling when off balance is felt then to respond to it. Where the Gracie's are athletes but they've proven to be experts. Which Daitoryu in feudal times could have been crude or refined. Technique is important of course, but training of the body surely is much more. Looking at Morehei Ueshiba though created Aikido, he was still trained in Daito-ryu.

My humble respects but It’s a pity to hear some commentary from the interviewer such as is martial ridicolous or even Sensei Guillaume is missing an opportunity to explain to occidental people what Ki is, something that is the basis not just for O Sensei but for many masters of all other martial arts forms and spirituality

That's a very funny comment :) Because I'm the interviewer, Guillaume is my best friend, and we essentially agree on more or less everything. Now you can rewatch the interview from another perspective ;) (Also check out "play devil's advocate" on Google ^^)
