As a retired snow plow driver,I don’t miss the job when seeing this amount of snow.Even tandem trucks couldn’t push this amount. Those operators/drivers are going to need a lot of patience and understanding from the public.Good luck to them and the citizens of Buffalo and New York State.

I lived in lassen county, that's in NorCal. They got plenty of heavy equipment and those snowblowers that go on the 10 wheelers. My street was usually handled with either a dozer or grader of a size used in building highways or leveling multi acre business lots for construction. We had to get our cars off the street completely before they'd even do it. And even then, they'd do it in multiple passes. Blade or bucket a little lower each time. Never really scraping the asphalt.

@@Svrano there in lassen county, half the jobs were seasonal. I knew a few plow guys who worked a different job the rest of the year. After a real storm passed, they'd have a 48 hour week in 3-4 days, and still have 3-4 more days of work that week that were equally long. They only really kept the county highways open during the storm. The rest of the roads, they'd open up in the days, weeks or months that followed the storm. Heaviest snow I saw in my 5 years there, 2' while I slept. Another 2' over the next 24 hours. At that point, I couldn't even make it to the highway. Then another 2' over the next 3 days. I didn't see my street for 2 months.

the way that they officially measure snow is that they take a board and measure snow at 6-hour (or longer) intervals before sweeping off the board. Otherwise, the snow would compact upon itself due to gravity, which is why what you see looks like less than 77 inches… it’s just become denser. I believe orchard park had 77 inches but a measured snow depth of 53, iirc.

I never thought I would swim on a thanksgiving day and to top it off, having my dinner with my BFF til this day with a Mexican family (My new family now) 😂 and I didn’t see any Mac & cheese, collard greens, ect I cried so hard. My BFF dad felt so bad he went to a soul food restaurant and got me everything I loved just so I could feel at home because the culture shock was real 😂🤦🏾‍♀️. We laugh about it til this day, but I loved how the whole entire family took my in as one of there own. People looking at me crazy because Im a freckle face black female 18yo at the time hanging with my New Mexican family and they already had 13 daughters and 1 son 😂. They welcomed me with open arms. I've lived in Buffalo all my 37 years, it's rare to get hammered like this, we're at or above the records. The worst of it is localized, primarily south/southeast of the city. The road crews are well equipped, people have snowblowers, & plow contracts (that's a common winter gig for landscapers & other weather restricted trades), as well as generators in the event of a power outage, which aren't that common/long. It's not the absolute chaotic havoc that people think, I'm 10 miles north of the city, we have around 12"-18" & everywhere is open and navigable by 2wd cars. The last massive snowfall event like this was in 2014, and before that in '06 (or '07?) there was power outages from an early rain/freeze in October which caused alot of downed limbs, & massive power outages. That was the worst I've seen & things were mostly back to normal in a week. Most people are well prepared, there was a few days notice, and sorry to hear two guys passed away shoveling, as well as anyone having trouble receiving medical assistance...but it's really not that big of a deal, in terms of natural disasters. It's going to be mid 40's all week which will cause some flooding, but again, not that much. ... It's funny, because I say "how can anyone live there", to people in Tornado Alley, or Hurricane inundated Florida, where whole towns are decimated.

I live in Lovejoy…& I’m unable to go to work today due to there being 2 1/2 feet of packed snow in the street at the end of my driveway that we couldn’t break up with a shovel. There’s been a car stuck at Vanderbilt & Benzinger since Saturday!! There’s several cars in the neighborhood that are stuck!! Everyone stay safe out there!!!!

I was born on Long Island and remember one Easter in the 60s we had snow, because the eggs were hidden outside. But moved Upstate in the late 60s and lived on a dairy farm, one in Amsterdam and then one in Richfield Springs. And the winters were brutal in Richfield Springs.

@Orcus999 Yea, so are hurricanes which a Cat 3 hit Long Island and NYC in 35 or 36 . My father remembers it .Also you can look it up. The point is.... IT SNOWED ON A EASTER SUNDAY ON LONG ISLAND IN THE 60S.

They need to have a fleet of tracked dozers D6, D7 size with angle blades to get through that stuff, back in the blizzard of "78" we had dozers out clearing roads that nothing else could get through. Winds piled snow up as high as ten feet!

When I lived outside of Boston in the early 70’s while stationed at Fort Devens I took the winter trip from Wisconsin to Massachusetts in Winter past Erie PA got caught in a couple bad storms off the lake. White knuckle driving at 30 MPH on the interstate. Very tough part of the US in the winter.
