Hi guys, just wanted to say that I wish I discovered your channel years ago. I began working out about 9 years ago at the age of 32. I was always the "fat kid", but when I hit my 30s, I really started to feel it. I 391lbs, pre diabetic, sleep apnea, and just felt like sh##. I have a son. he was 5 at the time when I decided I wasn't going to die at 40 due to reasons I can prevent. So I began by making small changes in my diet, and got a gym membership. The most I could do was ride a stationary bike for about 20-30 minutes a day, 3-4 days a week. Then I started to slowly incorporate weight training. In six months I lost 100 lbs. then six months after that, I managed to lose about another 70. So I went from 391 to 220 in a year. To be honest, I went a bit crazy and ended up in an ER once. I worked out 6 days a week, 2-3 hours a day, only ate egg whites, plain chicken breasts, spinach, broccoli, and protein shakes. I slowly learned the hard way that carbs are not the boogey man, and that I need to give my body time to recover. 9 years later, I still feel I am a work in progress. I have had injuries, a bad left knee, bone spurs in my right heel(which make it difficult to do regular barbell squats), and a torn rotator cuff. I have also struggled with my weight fluctuating, since I have also have put on more muscle in the past years, unfortunately along with some unwanted fat. It gets a bit frustrating, and there are moments that I want to give up, but I am always reminded of the alternative when I see a 400 lb guy riding in a hoverround. I love your channel. You guys are truly a breath of fresh air and I am happy to see that you are not the run of the mill fitness industry douchebags. Your dad and family is really cool too. My son is now 14 and I have him hitting the gym with me, so hopefully I can start my own Buff Dudes family tradition.

John St Maximus. Nice story man. I'm similar but the opposite end of the spectrum. I was too skinny and needed to gain weight. I started out at almost 6 feet tall being 130lbs. I was just skin and bone really. Started working out so I wouldn't be so small anymore. 2 years later I'm sitting at 175lbs. My friends and everyone at my work says I look way healthier. Haha I don't have a kid or anything, just got tired of looking at the small guy in the mirror. Keep it going man! We will be what we see ourselves as eventually.

The mental is by far the most difficult aspect for me since I suffer from cyclical depression. However, I got myself a personal trainer to structure my workouts and to get me motivated (you don't want to miss your sessions cause that's a lot of money out the window). That's when I noticed a different aspect of the mental challenge: BELIEVING that what you're doing works. If a professional is telling me this is the workout I'm gonna do today, then I attack it (and give it that extra effort) feeling confident it'll work. When I just did workouts myself the motivation was lower because I doubted it would even work. And then why put yourself through it?! In one month I lost 5cm around my waist and put on 1.5cm around my bum and arms... Money well spent.. Plus I had to cut down on snus (tobacco) to afford it, so double win! Great video as always you guys :-)

2 things i wanna point out 1 Thanks for bringing up the mental aspect I think not a lot of people talk about it and its the quickest route to failure and sadly for me contributes to a wide variety of my own failures, where the gym is concerned i've found 2 good ways to shut "that guy" up; go with a friend who motivates you (not always the one you like the most but the one you can bounce off of and you keep eachother going) and do 1rm's of all your main exercises because the difference is not always visual. For example when I first started going to a gym I was near anorexic could barely do just the bar of anything, a month or so later im looking cut (but still skinny) and my deadlift max was 70kg, after having a bike accident and falling into a massive depression I stopped going to the gym and got...fat enough to not be able to see myself...this went on for 2 years before I snapped out of it with my gf and we essentially dare eachother to go to the gym. Now I'm still fatter than i'd like to be and no cutting is showing yet but I KNOW the 5x5's are working because I've done them before and because my deadlift is now 110kg and I am instantly motivated to work hard for the next one and see how much further i've gone 2 NEVER put whole tomatoes in a blender with metal blades...the blades split the seeds which then soaks through the blend and makes it taste bitter, dont believe me? bite into a tomato seed and you'll see what I mean. You CAN get blenders with blades designed to not split seeds I think they're made of rubber or sillicone but it is much better to blend everything except the tomatoes then squeeze the tomatoes with your hands in a bowl until you're happy with it and then mix it all together with a spoon. Try it out you'll be glad you did.
