Interesting to find that the lower velocity projectile made it through the kevlar and the quicker ones did not. Learning more and more that the axiom 'velocity kills armor' is only a hard and fast rule for steel. Density, not velocity, seems to be the primary deciding factor with ceramics; the right bullet made out of something denser than lead and steel will take what a much faster standard construction pill will not. And for kevlar a strong jacket to allow the projectile maintain its shape + a velocity that isn't too slow but not fast enough where it will bleed all its energy flattening out seems to be the recipe for success (at least for pistol calibers, that is - once you get to rifle velocities that velocity alone is usually enough to overcome kevlar). Such interesting stuff. I wish I had the money to try out different projectiles on different armors and ballistic gel. With the ammo shortage I can barely afford to poke holes through paper. Gotta say there's some weird shit going on with the ammo/primer shortage. >_>
@BuffRANGE4 жыл бұрын
Yep, it's amazing how SB193 can penetrate Kevlar, and PE at subsonic velocities, but when you drive it faster (say 1500-1600 fps) it would get stopped. Extending the velocity further then brings you into the rifle velocities which then can typically defeat those materials again unless they become very thick (level III PE plate)
@justinlance41742 жыл бұрын
Bullet construction defeats armor not velocity or mass.
@Reticuli8 күн бұрын
@@justinlance4174 It's all of the above, plus bullet spin. The velocity is squared and actually does have usually a larger influence than bullet mass comparing supersonic rounds in a like to like comparison. However, supersonic rounds have to deal with the abrupt, disrupting transonic threshold upon impact, which a pointy, high-spin-rate subsonic round out a high twist barrel doesn't have to deal with. Disrupting characteristics of ceramic armor, for instance, is one of the reasons it's so effective: randomizes and distributes the energy. The transonic threshold shockwave is no joke, going into it or passing back down through it. Supersonic travel is also highly inefficient already once you push through that added wall, which is why subsonic rounds travel so far and can be weirdly more accurate. Add a high spin: the drag improves further and so does penetration. None of this was predicted. JSOC just wanted pointy subsonic rounds so their dudes with cans could be quiet and still punch through level 3A, but upon implementation it was learned that there's some other cool stuff going on. This is also another added benefit to the XM157. Subsonic rounds can be treated like artillery or an unguided ballistic missile: they may not have a flat trajectory, but it's efficient and can go a lot further if aimed correctly.

A couple of factors; one, he's a firearms channel and firearms channels are sort of in a 'black hole' when it comes to recommending videos. KZbin doesn't like guns, so they stuff gun channels waaay in the back. If you search youtube for car videos, they might recommend videos on engines 'cause it stands to reason you'd be interested in engines if you like cars. But say you search for war movies, or airsoft? It would stand to reason those people would be interested in firearms, but unless you search SPECIFICALLY for firearm-related stuff they won't recommend firearm content. In fact, I don't think they will recommend 'new' firearm channels (channels you haven't previously visited) at all - for one to show up on your recommended bar, you have to have visited that channel first, which is NOT how it works with other topics. So you almost have to either already know they exist or happen to search for something they made a video on specifically to find them. Channels like Forgotten Weapons got attention through publications and events and doing consultations for pop-culturally stuff outside of youtube to bring people in. Quality videos alone just doesn't cut it.

Perfect video with perfect timing. I just got some of Fort Scott's 80gr SCS 9mm bullets (slugs, not loaded) in today. Lovely bullets, totally over packaged though. I plan to reload them so I have some special threat 9mm on hand to make me feel better about not having a 5.7x28mm handgun with ss190 😞 According to Fort Scott's load data, they use a sub max load of bullseye under that bullet. If they went max (I'm assuming max *standard* pressure/low end +P), they'd get like 1,470fps out of the G19. A max load of Power Pistol (a low-mid pressure powder) gets well over 1,500fps from the G19. I'm certain that powder has a little wiggle room to go up on the charge...

Buffman - R.A.N.G.E. HV The story starts in France, with an attempt to produce pistol ammunition particularly intended for police requirements. The stated aim was to achieve good penetration, stopping power and accuracy while achieving a marked drop in recoil and in the "danger to surroundings outside the target"; i.e., a short range. The designer was a Mr Antoine; he was hired by SFM (Société Française de Munitions) who promptly secured the patents, produced the ammunition and began to market it. The design principle was to produce a very light bullet which could be launched at high velocity (hence the name THV = Très Haute Vitesse = very high speed). The bullets had a sharp point which in conjunction with the high velocity was intended to provide excellent barrier penetration. However, the sudden widening of the bullet behind the point was designed to generate a wide wound channel, and the light weight meant that it would quickly lose velocity, both in the target and (should it miss) in the open air. It was therefore only suitable for short-range use, and SFM only produced pistol rounds. As well as the three pistol loadings in my collection it was also made in .38 Special and .45 ACP. The cartridge cases are headstamped 'THV SFM' with the calibre. The bullet material is not specified in the manufacturer's data sheet but appears to be copper. The bullet was made with a hollow base, reducing the weight still further. The bullets were made with two different shapes: the first type had a simple point, but this was found not to feed well in self-loading pistols. A second pattern was therefore developed, with a wider, blunt tip, for the auto pistol loadings.

That's when you hope your helmet has some way flinging off your head so maybe all the energy doesn't get dumped into your skull LOL. Idk. Pretty impressive from the helmet though I like watching these armor videos pretty interesting.
@DrBakterius114 жыл бұрын
You don't have to worry about your neck because the impulse of the hit is extremely short and the weight of the bullet is very small compared to the weight of your head + helmet. That .308 shot would definitely kill you. Backface deformation and NIJ are outdated. Nowadays even American authorities buy helmets according to the European VPAM HVN 2009 standard because it focuses on the residual energy. 25 Joule is the maximum residual energy allowed acc to the VPAM standard because that's a number that's still survivable. When the residual energy is higher, the risk for brain damage or death rises exponentially. What is the material of which the test had is made? If it's too hard, it blocks the free dynamic deformation of the helmet, consequently reducing the bfd. That's also the problem with standard HPWhite test heads. The best test lab in Europe (Mellrichstadt, Germany) uses 100% plastiline heads because you can use the volume of the deformation of the test head to define the residual energy. The problem for aramid or PE helmets is, that they are very good against penetration but have high residual energy. To reduce the residual energy you have to use hybrid helmets with metal. Those helmets are also far better for multihit and rim-protection. From a ballistic standoint, the best helmets in the world can be found on www.ulbrichts.com . Those helmets in combination with their headshield can reduce .308 to survivable levels of residual energy below 25 jules.

@@BuffRANGE The helmets that people order, they always send the wrong one, they even "sell" a Crye Airframe replica for $400 and the guy who bought it complained and showed a picture of getting an OpsCore Hi-Cut replica instead, but at least it was still ballistic, not one of those thin airsoft helmet scams.

honestly with that ricochet at 10 mins I am wondering if you should have a barrier for yourself and the kids....you really don't want the kids to get nicked because CPS is a massive troll and loves to troll gun owners with kids.

That was the ejected brass case being ejected from the gun, but we have made some changes to where people are allowed to be when we're doing these tests.

@@BuffRANGE No I am talking about the bullet that ricocheted off the helmet into the wood base for the manikin then ricocheted into the wood back wall that you are pointing to @10:07 If that ricocheted the opposite way it would have came towards you! I don't know if it would have had enough force to injury anyone and I know the odds are low that it would have gone towards you (it has 360 degrees of ways to go) but it did go pretty far into that wood. All it had to do was bounce the opposite way and you could be in trouble. I just want you to realize that because it could have been a lot worse and you do amazing stuff and I don't want a really bizarre mishap to cause you trouble ^-^ There has been some famous deaths from bizarre ricochets so I just wanted to point it out just incase you didn't realize it. I mean this with the utmost respect.

What good is a helmet that doesn’t have any coverage? There’s no way that I’d wear a helmet that has this profile.. it doesn’t even cover your ears... since when did these stupid designs gain any favor??
@BuffRANGE3 жыл бұрын
Honestly don't know. I know the ACH and ECH and similar have profiles like this. The new IHPS helmets offer more side coverage. I'm guessing people who study where soldiers took hits deemed that area to be not as crucial?
@03c123 жыл бұрын
Lighter weight, allows the wear of ear pro/comms and the ability to take off sad ear pro and comms without taking off the helmet, better air flow into the helmet to keep you cool. Studies show that being shot in the side of the head is significantly less likely than the front or back so the "less" protection is a negligible difference. Like complaining about the M4 because the M16 has a longer barrel.
