Ah, love Giles in all his guises! And Anthony Head using his real accent as a subtle way to demonstrate the way teen Giles wanted to get away from his stuffy, Oxbridge roots is a really nice character detail, building off what we already learnt about him last season. Back in the day Joss Whedon was developing a Giles spin off called Ripper for the BBC. What we missed out on!

Armin Shimerman is one of my favorite actors, he doesn't get a lot of roles where he just gets to let loose and be over the top, but it's so fun when he does.
@roonarific10863 ай бұрын
As much as there is a lesson for adults to let loose more often, the bigger lesson in this episode is for the teenagers. Teenagers rebel etc, and complain that their parents and teachers want them to learn responsibility. But this episode demonstrates that teenagers can take the adults in their life for granted. Buffy complains at the over-protectiveness of Giles and Joyce at the start of the episode, of their demands that Buffy take more responsibility for herself etc. Later she gets a taste of the difficult role the adults play. She has to do her job as the Slayer, figure out what's happening and putting a stop to it. So babysitting a rebellious Giles and Joyce isn't making things any easier, much like Buffy lying to everyone earlier to sneak out and see Angel. It's the lesson of learning to be self aware and adds to the recurrent theme of this season: dealing with the consequences of your actions.

Ahhh… really want to respond to the text at 30:50, but don't think I could say anything without spoilers. But on a spoiler-free note: Once you highlighted the mayor's phone call in the sewers, I loved it. Because he's calling the sewer maintenance guy's attention to exposed gas pipes, which Buffy rips off the wall and uses as a flamethrower just a couple of minutes later. Having him mention them first makes suspension of disbelief easier there :D I love that

Wow I can’t stop thinking about the way you said Buffy is the adult of the slayer world. Because even Giles is in the lower power dynamic to her. As you’ve seen from the middle and final episode, Giles pulls back from ever being in charge and a lot of audience members hated that. They wanted him to be her father; he isn’t. They wanted him to lead saving the world; it’s not his job. He was never training Buffy to be a soldier but a war general. If you keep that in mind, the dynamic between the watcher and slayer makes a lot more sense as the seasons go on.

Lo those many years ago, we were encouraged to support the high school organization that I was in, the Choir. We sold candy, we sold candles, we sold Christmas ornaments. But it was only carried out by Choir members, no non-members were recruited as forced labor to assist us in our door-to-door machinations. Though we had several members of the Choir that also participated in athletics and either band or orchestra. The athletes generally made their fund-raising via the concession stand at the stadium, so no door-to-door for them, unless they also participated in one of the musical classes.

I remember those fundraisers: make the kids sell See's Chocolate Bars, magazine subscriptions, or wrapping paper. (Separate fundraisers) Growing up in a state with aluminum can deposit, "can drives" were frequent. We would go around asking for people's old soda and beer cans, haul it away for them, then collect the $.05 per can. For the unfamiliar, the deposit system is a recycling incentive: you pay extra per can, then get it back when recycled. Lots of people are happy to avoid that sticky mess of a chore, especially for a good cause.

Ah, I do really enjoy seeing Joyce and Ripper having fun in this episode. It’s a joy, and they do it so well! I also enjoyed Trick’s reaction to the mayor’s threat at the end. The very visible fear on that vampire’s face has you questioning what kind of threat the mayor might be that he can inspire such fear in a creature so clearly powerful in his own right. Very nicely played by them both, I thought.

Angle was doing Tai-chi. Personally, I always felt that Buffy was justified when she took off for the summer - her Mother told her that if she went out to fight and save the world that she should not come back home - Zander also was a jerk to her, Giles was irresponsible - everyone was in the wrong, in my view, except for Buffy. She did what she should do with a good chance she would be killed AND she had to kill the person she loved. So no, I feel the show did not handle that right - on that occasion, Buffy was in the right, everyone else was not.

When I was 11 through 13, I went door to door (by myself) selling candy to raise money for my chorus class each year. I don't have kids, but if I did, I would never allow them to do that now. You never know who might open the door and snatch them up. What's funny though is that I kept eating a bunch of the candy bars so then my mom was stuck paying for whatever I ate. She was so mad. But really, you expect a young kid to carry around a huge box filled with candy bars and not eat some of them? lol

"In the mayor's case does it matter how he got to the position he's in if he is doing ultimate good for Sunnydale?". That's a very interesting question, and there's probably no simple answer. This reminds of something my sister told me. She was working as a Missionary in Africa for a while. She told me about Rwanda, where there's sort of a very strict dictatorship. From a western democratic point of view it sounds bad, but my sister says it actually seems to work quite well atm. For example, the hospitals in the whole country are getting emergency supplies sent via drone. This way medicine can be sent in 17 minutes instead of 1.5 hours by car. There's also no trash in the streets etc. So sometimes things aren't black or white, but there can be some gray, and it's hard to judge, especially from the outside.
@lauraw25263 ай бұрын
Yeah, dictatorships aren't necessarily bad - they're a lot more efficient than democracies, and if your people live in poverty and need a lot of immediate supplies, that can be a great thing. But of course, it's also easy for the wrong person to take advantage in that situation.
@mamatthews783 ай бұрын
In my High School, every club and group sold candy to raise money. We had almost no budget for anything, so field trips, competitions, etc. all got funded with candy. Even our Prom was funded by selling magazines. You had to sell so many subscriptions to get to be on the Prom committee.

Comedy Overload with Snyder stealing the show! Band Candy always a fan favourite, and another comedic gem along with Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered from S2. Great to see all the adults acting like brat horny teenagers. Funniest part was when Joyce says to Giles 'your like Burt Reynolds' He was about the most famous Hollywood Film Star of the 1970s! That's what makes younger people reacting to this show so entertaining. The part at the end too was also very funny when Joyce and Giles see each other again and turn away embarrassed. Many have said the serious message in this episode was about the dangers of 'spiking' of drinks, drugs etc losing inhibitions, with the juxtaposition of the adults as teenagers.
@williambowman23263 ай бұрын
Once again, really intriguing reaction. My only addition is underneath the comedy is the subject of duality. You discussed the Buffy/Faith relationship and their duality. This episode starts the Buffy/Joyce examination and their relationship. The show details the journey of Buffy to becoming a successful, independent, intelligent mature woman and that will include Buffy’s possible future. Band Candy shows screen Joyce and a matriarchal Buffy. This is now another relationship to watch on the subject of duality as well as the family dynamic.

Sometimes it’s interesting to see different cultures approach parenting differently. In Asia, it doesn’t matter how strict parents may be, the children shows great appreciation for how their parents’ raise them and in return, they take care of them when they get older. In the west, however, children sees parents as a burden and controlling disregarding the hardship of parenting by saying they didn’t choose to be born. In this case I see Buffy as ungrateful to Joyce and what she had to suffer raising her and having to move because of the life Buffy leads.
@alicequinn5053 ай бұрын
It is interesting, but a reasoned person would see both sides, despite the culture. Parents both committed a horrible crime against their children, by bringing them into a world where they will be forced to survive, and sacrificed a lot for their children and deserve respect. Neither stance by itself is entirely healthy.
