@peter I think what they were trying to go for was the underscore and reassert that Spike was truly evil (which although he always nominally was, had long been forgotten by most fans by this point.) and to make the point that he had effectively hit a brick wall in his moral and character development which motivates him to take the actions he does subsequently. The idea is sound IMHO, I think it was just a victim of execution in that this scene is so repulsive, it overshoots the dramatic point they were trying to make.

Her blood was splattered on Willow's white shirt, much like how the fawn's blood was splattered on her hands while she was wearing the white dress. Definitely the S6 episode that hits fans the hardest IMO, because losing Tara really did come out of nowhere. For everything they've been through, a stray bullet from a bitter man-child is what kills a family member and it proves how random tragedy can be. As for Spike, well... I think it's in this horrible moment Spike realizes why Buffy can never be with him. For all his feelings towards her, he is still little better than a demon driven by instinct. He's never known genuine love in a long time, and that coupled with mixed signals, he never understood until now. Buffy was right to break it off and the painful honesty coupled with it revealed her remorse.

@Logan_Baron5 жыл бұрын
Yep. Even before this Joss had pointed out many times that the audience kept forgetting that Spike was a monster. Vampires can love, but without a soul it is twisted. It's obsessive, it's selfish, it's dark. I love the Spike character, but we need to understand this. It is what drives him to seek his soul back. It was pointed out that Buffy had said no to him before, and then had sex with him. This was different though. She was crying. He realizes that a man would know the difference. I monster wouldn't and he doesn't want to be a monster anymore. He gets the soul because he wants for Buffy to have the man she deserves rather than the monster.

But he often forgot to show other kinds of strength besides traditionally-masculine (physical & arguably magical = another representation of overwhelming physical ability b/c of how magic in the show interacts with the physical world and renders others helpless). And he fell so in love with his grimdarkbad!realism and quippy-lines that he increasingly sacrificed character-consistency, to the show's detriment and in an unfair below-the-belt hit to the fans who expected better of him.

I have to fast forward the scene. I apologize. Not very good with putting long sentences together. I'm glad he went away for a while. To take care care of some business. But I also understand he does not have a soul. James was soo affected by this episode. In his contract it says he refuses to do scenes like this, he even turned down roles like that. Spike may do some good things, but without a soul he can never truly be a good guy. @@stormnightmare4378 No idea. I would say maybe it’s because us Americans are edgier and have a higher tolerance but anyone who has ever watched a French horror movie knows that’s not true AT ALL. I avoided watching BTVS for years because it was a “campy 90’s kids show” but midway through season 2, I discovered this was absolutely not the case. I’m floored by how much they got away with as a cable TV show aimed at a younger audience. I’m even more floored by the things they DIDN’T get away with (just look up some of their scripts). This show was NOT afraid to push the envelope. Seriously, I lost count of how many torture scenes there were in the show and pretty much every character was kinky as hell. Heck, the character of Spike alone is a walking parental advisory warning.

In Italy we have a way to determin the rate of movies and TV shows...green,yellow and red marks...the 🟢 means everybody can watch it,the 🟡 means kids must watch it with parents,the 🔴 means no kids allowed."Buffy"started as 🟡,then became 🟢 and finally 🔴.

Yep, you are as observant as I thought..... you caught the sick joke during the opening credits - where Amber Benson was added in the episode Tara is killed. I know people who have watched the series a few times and never caught it. Joss Whedon giveth. Joss Whedon taketh away. As for Spike's attempted rape of Buffy: Spike and Buffy's sexual relationship was always rooted in violence. It was their foreplay, for the most part. Spike in an act of desperation went with what he knew - Buffy responds when he gets rough with her. Their relationship was never healthy. Tough to watch but it sets up the catalyst for Spike's venture to the far off land to make the deal.

Joss wanted the death to be a Major Character, and "Officially" Amber wasn't. Granted at the last minute. Amber is in the Next Episode also, but not as "Tara".

Shan, I only discovered your reaction videos a few days ago and have been binge watching them since. After seeing your reactions to five plus seasons of Buffy I could see how invested you became in the stories and the characters. This is the one episode I actually dreaded watching, not for what happened in the episode, I have seen it many times, but knowing how you would react and how hard it would be for you to experience the events within. I'm a 61 year old man who as I said have watched the entire series many times but I always tear up when watching Tara's death and did so even more as I watched your heartfelt reaction to it. I know it has been many months since this video was posted and I just hope the hurt you felt didn't last too long.

Hugs to you Shan. I couldn't wait for you to watch this one and at the same time I dreaded it for you. Every time you say you loved Tara or the couple, I thought oh man, it's going to be that much harder for you when you see the end of Seeing Red. Even though it hurts, I'm glad you weren't spoiled for what happened. There are a number of scenes I always look forward to people watching during the seven seasons(lots of them are the shocking/ sad things that happen) but I have to say, Tara getting shot is the one I most want to see people's reaction, and I always get mad when someone gets spoiled about it. I don't know if anyone has followed the Mark Watches series on the internet, but he used to do reaction videos for the later season and Seeing Red was one of them, boy he flipped out when that bullet hit Tara. That was his favorite character and he lost it! The video isn't on KZbin or anywhere else I can find,but at the time, you could download it from his site so I did and I will never get rid of it. He also got very upset over the bathroom scene with Buffy and Spike. You can read his written review of Seeing Red here: markwatches.net/reviews/2012/08/mark-watches-buffy-the-vampire-slayer-s06e19-seeing-red/

This is one of the episodes that's been written by Steven DeKnight. Who happened to produce Spartacus at the end of that decade. His style is always gritty and shocking and he really understands how to shake us with some crazy storytelling.

I remember watching this when it first aired, but I didn't understand how disturbing it was until I saw it again when was much older. What makes that last scene with Tara so frightening is just how *real* it seems; all-powerful vampires and demons are scary, but fictional. Being attacked by a lone, raving lunatic with a gun is far, *far* more terrifying, because it could happen to any one of us. Also, James Marsters was so badly affected by that rape scene that he specifically put it into his contract that he'd never do anything like that again.

My sister turned me onto Buffy. I texted her one night after watching entropy and asked if I should continue on or stop because I had a class the next day. She said to wait cause something would happen that would want to make me keep watching. I checked it out the next day and I’m glad I waited cause I would have been up all night finishing up the season. I’m also glad no one was home when Tara got shot because I almost had a panic attack. RIP Tara, you and Willow should have been forever.

Hugs all around for my BTVS fandom fam. This one hurts. I think we all feel similarly about Tara--her death was hugely shocking and devastating. "Your shirt" stays with many of us forever. The bathroom scene. For the actors, I hate that the writers put James and Sarah through such a scene. Both despised it, and James has spoken about the toll it took on his mental health. For the characters, I feel this was Spike's wake up call. He thought he could have a relationship with Buffy, but she understood that theirs was never a healthy romance. Compare soulless Spike to Angelus, who tortured the women he fixated on by killing their loved ones. Vampires can't love because they're inherently selfish. Once Angel regains his soul, we don't blame him for the actions the demon committed while inside his body. Nor do I blame William for Spike's actions. What Spike did was awful, period. The fact that he shows remorse, however, tells me that he's at least better than Angelus.

See? Jonathan actually is nice. He saves Xander from getting pulped, and tells Buffy how to defeat Warren. I think he only joined The Trio out of peer pressure and his heart was never really in evil. Also, the Tara shooting really did come out of nowhere but Joss Whedon is an a-hole worse than George R.R. Martin. Randomly and horribly killing and/or torturing the sweetest and most wonderful characters in any of his shows.

Seeing red is a colloquial term for being so blinded by your emotions that you act impulsively. "I was so angry I saw red."

Oh, and in the bathroom scene, when Spike says, "Great love is wild and passionate and dangerous. It burns and consumes." Sound familiar? That's because Plec took THAT line, paraphrased it, and it became Damon's line, "you want a love that consumes you. You want passion, adventure, and even a little danger." Of all the Spike lines/scenes to paraphrase, she HAD to go with a line from the bathroom scene. Nice job, JP.

I crazy cus I KNOW Spike doesn’t have his soul yet BUT this ep got tons of hate fan mail. I wish they gave Spike a different motivation to get his soul. He’s still MILES better than Angelus ever was. Angelus never felt remorse. Spike DID And don’t get me started with Tara’s death!
