Lots of people hate on this episode, but for some reason I remember it being one of my favorite one off episodes of the first 2 seasons. Perhaps if I watched it in full again instead of just 10 minute fair use productions on youtube I might be exposed to all the less than stellar parts that my adolescent self didn't have a problem with.

In case no one else mentions it, this episode was just supposed to be Buffy vs Cottoneye Joes. But Marti Noxon mentioned to Joss Whedon a nightmare she'd just had about eggs that were hatching and controlling people's minds. Whedon was supposedly so interested that he told her to add that into the script. Whether there is a connection between sex ed and the eggs is something I can't answer. You'll need to psychoanalyze Marti Noxon yourself to figure it out.

Plot twist: Halloween was her first episode! She overhauled the script (I guess as a Joss request since he didn't like the original). Every writer had his/her voice and Marti became, faaaaaast, Joss's number 2 around Season 4. I'm not her big fan as a Buffy writer but I'm a fan of her as a leader. Ans she is so funny and nerd in a lovely way. During quarantine she took a few minutes to wrote me through Twitter and it made my day.

Plot twist number 2: since you once said or wrote that you'll watch Angel....There is a writer, from Angel, that... Sorry but he is a genius: Tim Minear. And, de facto, a Joss clon. Plot twist number 3: Tim was the first writer to break stories without Joss. And Joss was a control freak...

There are the odd Buffy reactors on KZbin but a lot are just not good, they just sit there and basically show the episode for free in the corner. Your reactions are just so fun to watch and always genuine, but also your editing makes your vids just a joy to watch, in your reactions and on the Buffy episodes as well, despite knowing the episodes it gives us who have already watched something new to see, and the humour in them is so funny. And then at the end you give a good thoughtful opinion of the episode, just everything a reaction video should be. Only halfway through season two and I'm already hooked on your vids and look forward to seeing you upload due to the entertainment value you put in each video, can not wait for how much fun we've got ahead. Buffy and Xander arguing about who should perform the autopsy. Buffy trying to keep a conversation on the rails with Cordelia.

This is my guilty pleasure episode!... I'm weird. But the episode is all about how authority figures have an irrational fear about their children's sexuality. Notice, Joyce assumes Buffy didn't pick up her dress bc of "female hormones" (eyeroll). And notice that the sex-ed teacher is essentially teaching them abstinence propaganda using a lesson that doesn't work. Cordelia literally flirts with another boy saying, "Wanna make a baby?" And Buffy implies that she wants to have a child with Angel, until he tells her otherwise. Essentially, the lesson is based on the idea that teenagers do not want children because they don't want responsibility. But all of the characters lives are full of responsibilities that they are accepting, not running away from. I feel like this is one of the more important episodes of the franchise, even if it's one of the most overlooked.
@anisioc.34264 жыл бұрын
So many great points! Thanks for writing this up. I think Marti Noxon is pretty great at tackling some seriously uncomfortable issues and I’d wager that in many ways people are more turned off by this episode because of what it does right than in spite of it. Also, it’s rather interesting that, plot-wise, the true villain here (Mother Bezoar) is a creature that reproduces asexually.
@Henrik_Holst4 жыл бұрын
Another note is that all the teens that dutifully adhere to the propaganda (aka closely guards the egg) turns into this large conforming mass of slaves to the cause. Also it's a great play on Alien and Invasion of the Body snatchers in a High School setting, excellent excellent episode.

Absolutely - like many other episodes of Buffy, this is the typical high-school plot with a twist - and clearly, in this episode, the 'moral' is the horrors that await teenagers if they have sex. If only they could have played this out in a better written episode. You're right about the music though, it's far better than this episode deserves. As for the lingering on the antics of the Gorch brothers, the only reason I can think of why they spent so much time with them would be something along the lines of 'crap, we've got 42 mins of air time and 34 mins of plot'.

The similarity between them is because the Faculty and this episode are both based off the same book, The Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

@@datickywickygurl But what are the odds of having two adaptations set in schools with teenager protagonists coming out the same year?
@charlottegiles20504 жыл бұрын
@@TheZapan99 Well the faculty writers were definitely Buffy fans - the character of Delilah (the bitchy cheerleader) was specifically written for Charisma Carpenter - but she turned it down as she didn't want to be typecast.

Clea Duvall who played the invisible girl in "Out Of Mind, Out Of Sight" (Season One) was in "The Faculty".

It's pretty much Invasion of the Body Snatchers meets Alien meets teenage hormones. Its quite a juggling act and then you add random cowboy vampires on top of all that, well things get a little loosey goosey. The show can do great juggling feats, combining horror and comedy and such but once in awhile there'll be an episode where they just ask a bit too much. Like you said it was entertaining at best. I enjoyed the horror movie homages and Xander and Cordelia's love-hate bickering act, which is reminiscent of the dynamic between Sam and Diane on Cheers. All in all one of the weaker eps of a really strong season. Can't wait to see your reaction to the rest of the season! It's been fun to see it through a different generation's eyes than my own.

Okay, speaking as an oldie...this is actually a play on an old Heinlein book/movie called the Puppet Masters. It's a trope of 80s and 90s horror, and I can see how if you're not familiar with the original material it might seem weird, but if you have seen or read The Puppet Masters, this is cheesy horror brilliance.

Its very much a tribute to Invasion Of The Bodysnatchers and moreso The Puppet Masters by Robert A. Heinlein

Marti Noxon received her job on this show because this episode was her spec script. Joss Whedon and David Greenwalt called her up and both said with monotonic voices that she wasn't right for the position before laughing and saying that yes she did indeed have the job. Clearly they saw something in the writing a lot of fans don't and thought it good enough to hire her while joking about it with her as well.
