What I like about this episode is how it directly subverts the Princess-Damsel trope. Angel clearly sees himself as Link to Buffy's Zelda--that's why he jumps into the harbor after Buffy, leaving the box to the vamps. But IRL, it's Angel who's Princess Peach. Buffy sees him as the vulnerable one. Willow even says it explicitly: "Then she can protect Angel *and* have cake." This is one of only two shows I've ever seen that so artfully deconstruct the "Disney Princess" story arc.

Vincent Schiavelli (playing Jenny Calendars uncle) has appeared in movies like One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Ghost. I nerded out when I saw him in this episode when it first aired. Having an amazing character actor like him appear in Buffy was a major get. The Judge basically burns the humanity out of you. Typically his touch will not effect demons or vampires but, the Researcher and Spike & Drusilla are special cases as they retain portions of their humanity. Books for the Researche. The gypsy’s aren’t evil, they just want justice for what their people suffered through at the hands of Angel/Angelus. They don’t want Buffy to die because she’s a force for good. They don’t want Angel to die because he won’t be constantly tortured by his soul/conscience. Jenny’s plan was to get Buffy to retrieve the Judges arm (check) and put the idea out that Angel should take it and protect it hence separating Buffy/Angel and removing the danger of Angel’s curse being lifted. Some interesting facts: "Surprise" and its part 2, "Innocence," aired a day apart. Originally, Buffy was at the 7/8/9pm Monday timeslot, and "Innocence" aired at the 6/7/8pm timeslot on Tuesday just before the series premiere of "Dawson's Creek." It would remain in the day and time slot until the series ended in 2003. The Claddagh ring that Angel gives Buffy is the Claddagh ring his first wife, an Irish woman, gave David Boreanaz.

The Judge's touch burns the humanity out of beings. So if you're human, you're toast. If you're demon, but have some human traits, it could be touch and go. Only the truly evil survive his touch. Hence the nerdy vampire with a passion for books and learning doesn't survive when the Judge touches him.

Actually, no. The show has established that Sunnydale is in California and the legal age of consent in California is 18 years of age or older. So no, not legal sex. Of course, human laws don't apply to vampires.
