Good video. For yellow jackets 🐝 🐝 my dad and I use to do the following: Two lawn chairs about 30’ away or so, A shop vac with extension cord. Set vacuum nozzle at yellow jacket entrance and plug 🔌 in extension cord back at house. Relax in lawn chairs and enjoy the show. The vac aggravates the yellow jackets and they come out in droves only to make it about 2” before taking a ride in the black tunnel of death. When you open the shop vac you will see that carnage. I’m not sure how they die so quickly, maybe it’s when they hit the filter inside.
@DeMac102 жыл бұрын
My shop vac has no filter I dont think, just a tube that leads to the basin, meaning I'd have created a new den for these creatures, hundreds of flying yellow jackets cooped into a shop vac. I'd probably just suck my cars exhaust into the vac at that point to kill them off
@glidershower2 жыл бұрын
I think they die of a combination of asphyxiation and dehydration, as their oxygen intake is deprived by the massive air current flowing outwards, which in turn also removes the water in their bodies, like putting a wet rag on the intake side of a fan. Gotta hate wasps myself, lolz. Highly aggressive, can sting multiple times, they don't hunt enough pests like spiders do to justify tolerating them, have no useful byproducts, and goddamn do they reproduce like mad, _and kill honeybees, an insect that's a 1000 times more valuable and less aggressive._

I use my 2.0 on yellow jackets under the apple tree. In a few days, the jackets got smaller, and then smaller still, as I depleted the workers and the younger ones had to venture out. Most are a 2-3 hit per kill. Can kill a baldie, but you need 4-5 shots. They need to make a full auto BAS! Even more fun is the stable flies that drove me nuts on Lake Superior. They love to congregate on my mining buckets. You'll have a 5 gal bucket with 200 flies trying to warm up on it. Best shot so far has been 15 KIA.

I have all four versions of the BaS family. Although the earlier versions claim they're not as effective on the wasps etc, I have found they also work just fine. The Lawn and Garden has even dispatched small roaches and stink bugs. The Black Fly edition 3.0 is a beast. I haven't tried the official salt. I want to try a coarse table salt or even pretzel salt to note the difference.
@FrederickDunn6 жыл бұрын
Hi Marc, I think the dust and smaller grains of salt in some other types of salt tend to gum up the loader and cause misfires. I'm going to continue my BA3.0 adventures in 2019. The "weaponized" salt seems good and won't jam your shooter!
@MarcPipistrello6 жыл бұрын

@MarcPipistrello4 жыл бұрын
Frederick Dunn it’s been about a year, and after further testing I’ve discovered that most effective range starts around 10 - 12 inches out to around 3 feet. At point blank, the salt hasn’t hd enough time to pick up most effective velocity. Also, the wider spread after one foot out makes for a better coverage. I have also tried kosher salt. Way more effective when it hits but the pattern doesn’t allow optimum coverage. Although I never had any dust caking issues, I can see where the high performance salt would excel.

I had an idea a while back: on a day with no wind, jab some sticks in a circle around a ground hive a safe distance away, then attach a 'fence' of plastic to the sticks and dump dirt on the bottom edge to give it a fairly good seal. Next, dump a couple of pounds of dry-ice inside the fence. As it melts, it turns into CO2, which is heavier than air. Theoretically, it /should/ sink down into the wasp nest and suffocate them. Any that fly down into the nest won't see or smell anything alarming before it is too late. Does that make sense?

I'd make a small cage with aluminum screening, and a hole big enough for the barrel of the salt gun to fit in. Place it over the entrance to the nest, with the barrel of the gun in the hole. The wasps can leave the ground, but not fly away, while you're busy blowing out their mean little brains! :-)

Well I didn't see one wasp die, but it was fun to watch. Two summers ago had an issue with wasps flying into my walls where my furnace vented out. Was pondering how the heck gonna get them out. So .... got me a bucket an extension cord and my shop vac. Propped the hose end up by the hole turned it on.... Went inside. Few days later, well ok ..... next spring opened the vac and full of dead wasps. Was fun to watch them sting the hose wand, that is until one landed on me and got stupid happy.

Is a full auto version possible? I mean, there’s full auto air soft guns, so why not a bug a salt mini gun?

they have a modified crossman co2 pistol they sell now. Not quite full auto, but 10 shots before you gotta reload, and a lot more kick than a pump can do

Realize I am late to this party by a few years; but I just ordered the CO2 Shred-Er. Purpose for that is for when paper wasp gets into to the house. Not sure if will kill yet but hope so! I have encountered nest outside as depicted here and this just wasn't right tool for the job. Valient effort though!!
@FrederickDunn3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure they want that thing fired inside the house? BUT, I hope it goes well. I also think it's going to make a mess :)

There are more effective ways to eliminate yellow jackets. The best and safest way is to locate both entrances to their nest in the ground during the daytime when they are active and then come back at night and cover both entrances with clear bowls. Leave the bowls on for about 24- 48 hours and they will all die from starvation. They will see the daylight and try to get out both entrances and will be confused and not be able to get out. This would eliminate the issue of being stung, but of course, using a great salt blasting weapon is certainly more fun. 😁
@FrederickDunn6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jason, there are certainly lots of methods and options. For this video, I was testing salt. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. :)

@@ryank7142 why do you say I'm an idiot? Apparently you are either just a troll or don't know anything about ground wasps and their stupidity, oh... probably the latter since you seem to be just like the wasps
@jasonmcdougal89986 жыл бұрын
@@Felisargyle they won't dig new holes because they are attracted to the light of day and try to go out to get food. They aren't smart enough to figure out that they can't get out and won't even attempt to dig new holes. They will however dig if you cover the holes so they cannot see the light of the sun.

They came out with a c02 edition called the Shred-Er which appears to be much more powerful. It looks like it would take out wasps.
@FrederickDunn Жыл бұрын
Not a fan of having to load a CO2 cartridge. Part of the beauty of the original units is all you needed was salt. But you're right, it would kill wasps, but then so would a CO2 pellet pistol without a pellet, the air blast alone would blow it apart.

Idk man looks like u got a few hits in but damn when you dropped the gun I lost it loll sheesh that crazy but def a flame thrower next time or actual wasp spray sum that’s not gonna have you retreating, getting stung on behalf of doing another company’s free promo is wild but to each there own. Them suckers looked brutal ouch 🤕😵💫
@edgarlarios47185 жыл бұрын
I imagined this from the WASP point of view. Like A Bug's Life, with an Uncharted 4 camera. A wall of salt lines the exit what broken fragments a body parts lay. On the flight up you come right in front blows up and you know you're in for a world of hurt. LOL.

not the best method for destroying wasps, it is easier to open their nest, run off to wait and then run up and pour them quickly with boiling water and run off. In practice, the method said works well. This is for medium and small nests.
@FrederickDunn4 жыл бұрын
This was a salt gun demo. True, there are lots of more effective methods to deal with wasps.

I think I would have set up a bait station a few feet away, which would attract the wasps. Getting them out of their nest would likely be more productive (lol, destructive!) than pointing it into their nest hole. And it would probably be safer. Plus, you'd be able to keep the a-salt weapon in your hands.

Awesome footage of the yellow jacket assault. Love how the gun gets dropped like a french infantryman. A better strategy for wiping out that colony would be to set up a vacuum cleaner with the nozzel at the entrance and just vacuum them all up.

We used to use coarse sand in our slingshots when I was a kid and it was quite effective from a few feet away but never tried it on an inground wasp/hornet nest.
@FrederickDunn6 жыл бұрын
Sand would certainly work. The Bug-a-salt is designed for use in the house and around food, but I could definitely see where grains of sand outside would do the job. More abrasive than salt on windows and some other surfaces.
