These Scepter mil-spec gas cans have some significant advantages over metal jerry cans. I review the plastic fuel can that is the preferred choice of Canadian and US military. These are military grade gas cans that are made in Canada! NO RUST! NO EXPLOSIONS! BUILT ROCK SOLID!

random trick i learned in the military about those when they start to get old and hard to open by hand is put a little fuel on the threads and gaskets before you close them. will help seal them better and will lub the threads to open it easier.

The reason for three handles on the fuel containers is to be able to know what you are grabbing in the dark. The military water containers have two handles. In pitch black it is easy to identify between the two.
@alterego5124
@alterego5124 4 жыл бұрын
Original reason for the 3 handles is as he mentioned and to allow 2 people to share the load and travel easier/quicker in bad/long conditions. The 2 handle idea for water identification is a good upgrade.

The Jerry-can and the Ameri-can have an interesting story behind them. The Germans during WW2 came up with the design after many prototypes. They were adopted by every military force in the world after that The Americans slightly redesigned how the can is seamed together and the nozzle different but the 3-point carrying handle has remained the same. Plastic for water and gasoline and steel pressed cans for diesel fuel as it is oily enough to stave off corrosion.
@jusportel
@jusportel Жыл бұрын
The Americans did more than “slightly redesign” the can, they kept only the general size, and three handles. The US can is flimsy, prone to leaking, very hard to open quickly, requires the use of a separate spout, even on military vehicles with the pull out fuel filler. I drive an M37 every day, and also carry spare fuel. I have two British cans from 1945, and one from 1980. Two US cans from the 80’s, and one of the plastic Scepter cans. The British cans are almost an exact copy of the original “Jerrycan”, and are an absolute pleasure to use. The Scepter can is pretty good, MUCH easier to open than the old metal US cans. It also pours smoothly enough, that you don’t need the spout for the M37. The US metal cans are ornaments.
@Jollyprez
@Jollyprez 4 жыл бұрын
Please note that these cans can hold just about ANY fuel - kerosene, diesel, and gasoline. The ONLY difference is the cap retainer ring's color. Red for gasoline, yellow for diesel, and blue for kerosene.
@lyfandeth
@lyfandeth 4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, in the US a variety of city, state, and federal laws make the Sceptre tank illegal for gasoline. EPA/CARB nonvented tanks and nozzles. DOT requirements for flame arrestors (steel filter screen.) And often it is illegal to put gasoline in a plastic can, or any can that is not red and "approved".

you probably don't have this problem up in Canada, but down here in Florida, where it gets kinda.... warm.. the fumes from the fuel can expand creating enough pressure on the cap to make it very difficult to open. The Scepter cans are the best, no question. Cold weather vs. material has always been a consideration, but I've used these in my personal truck for years, and never, ever had an issue. Scepter used to make a better pour spout that the one now most commonly available in Western Canada, so I'm looking at alternatives. I prefer web/bungee fastening to metal "cages, with a piece of thin foam mat (backpack/yoga mat?) between the jerry can and the side of the box. Some guys say metal cages are better. To each his own - this has worked for me. My personal truck has the OD green Scepter cans - I try to get them on sale. I've got one 10L version of this Scepter Mil-spec container filled with lubricating oil - just in case. (0-W-20 Synthetic in winter). As an old guy with too many miles in the north behind me, I go by experience for some things. Even the "consumer grade" red Scepter gas and yellow Diesel "jeep cans" (same dimensions) are well made, although nothing like the Mil spec that these are.

I've had my pair for at least 10 years: refilling them twice each year. Two primary complaints. First is that the caps lock up between refills. So I purchased the cap wrench which goes with these cans. Second is the fill spout accessory. The cap with the long fill tube coming out its center. They leak, during pouring, and get worse with age. Using a siphon or a battery operated wand pump each require a platform.

I'll have to check those out. Right now I use those "Midwest" brand 5.2 gallon metal jerry cans that you can pick up over at Harbor Freight for about $45USD and some change. They're pretty good, I bought 10 of them so far, and I have had very few problems with them. They're much better than those cheap plastic gas cans that you can pick up over at Walmart, but eventually I'd like to upgrade to some of those "LC Industries" and "Scepter" brand mil-spec gas cans. For those of you who can not afford to spend $90 on a mil-spec grade gas can, like I said Harbor Freight sells "Midwest" metal jerry cans that are pretty good for about half the price of a "Scepter".

The size vs a larger perm. tank is nice if (heaven forbid) you should break down and have to transfer to another vehicle. The perm tank would prohibit you from taking the fuel with you. Also, I like the flow rate of that pump. The pumps at the station have the auto shut off safety so they can push the high flow rate. With this, you are relying on human intervention to limit a spill. If it's dark you might not see it topping off.. and bingo!! your pant leg just became a gas-soaked wick. This was a great find... Thank you! -rob

I wonder if the thinner wall military style plastic gas containers are OK. You can buy them for $17 each at Costco and anywhere else for a few dollars more. They are very durable. A full can will expand and contract with temperature but you can leave the vent valve a little loose which solves the problem. Contraction isn't an issue (I've had it happen). They won't expand until the temp is above 30c.

I bought two of the real metal mil-spec ones. Not the Cheaper than Dirt Chinese knockoffs. Cost me over $100 for each with shipping. And they were being prohibited from selling them to all the surrounding states. My state MA is the most restrictive states and when it wasn't listed I snagged two before I couldn't get them. So they go in the back of my 1996 417,000 miles Tacoma. I use one of the siphon hoses with the glass marble in the end. You just move it up and down twice and it siphons pretty darn well.

Love the idea about it floating we’re it has the air pocket on top ! It would be nice if they were made from recycled plastic they might be and if so that makes it so much more ! Toyotas are great vehicle’s they are hard to beat ! Resale value is always high dependability is superior and they really run and drive so good with great features like the 400 watt AC power inverter! Also if you change brakes or just little ad ons, simple maintenance you’ll find there so easy to work on and have features like 2 pins 3 wire clips and compress the caliper pull old pads drop in new ones 2 pins 3wire clips and your done ! No bolts to take out and have trouble getting them back in or holding it up keeping it together and starting a bolt ! Nope Toyotas are great and easy to work on I’ve worked on them and find something new a great made that solves problems that I’ve seen other manufacturers have and still have. Great video very helpful in deciding about a great gas can !

The whole design comes originally from German fuel cans wich the whole world then copied after WWII. And 3 handles are actually made to make carrying easier and more versatile. So different number of handles is an upgrade (or downgrade) on this piece of German engineering.

If anyone is looking for a bug out vehicle, i would highly recommend a 7th, 8th or 9th (the beginning of ford considering MPG also the use of the 300 L6 engine) generation ford f150 In the current market they are cheap, parts are readily available, the 300 straight 6 is a very reliable and plenty powerful engine (it was even used in commercial applications) they do exist in a 4wd configuration with the near bulletproof c6 transmission. But even 2wd they're not bad for light offroading with a good driver. they can be found with dual tank systems which not only adds redundant fuel pumps but also extended range (off hand the number 40 gallons combined capacity sticks in mind) though the gas mileage is atrocious for heavy daily use (15-20mpg give or take) which with no extra fuel a full set up could result in between 600 and 800 miles of range.

I have some that are less than 2 years old, 2 cycles of fuel storage though them with less than a few degrees temperature change, (stored in climate controlled area) that as the fuel vaporized are now bulged out at minimum 1" per side, even when empty.

I have the metal Jerry can but I do agree the value of the plastic ones is something I should consider when I can afford it. My question is related to fuel I have a older king cab truck with a regular size bed. In your opinion would be putting one of those auxiliary tool box looking fuel tanks on the vehicle at the cost of bed space be worth it? I could carry a few Jerry cans instead and have more space for food, water, supplies, etc. and be alright and I currently carry a metal can now in case I cant get to a gas station for whatever reason.

The brilliant three handle design is from the Germans in WWII. They were the first to do it with their “Jerry” cans.

A pour spout would be faster but if used with a funnel depending on how big the small hole is, it'll be at least as fast?

I looked at these at Princess Auto but choked on the $80 price point. I’m not shy about swapping cash for value, but it’s just a gas can... ended up buying the same size and style at (I think) Canadian Tire for about $22 per unit.

Well I guess theres a reason why they are NATO issue. Certainly not necessary for everyone I agree with you there. They are built much thicker and stronger than those red ones, but it all depends on need I guess.

Did you make a video about the fuel bladder that can be permanently attached to your truck bed? Ideally under a diamondback hardcover

Are the mil spec water cans like this ok for use as gas cans? You can get them on eBay new for forty dollars with free shipping. I noticed some of them when you showed the other assorted cans. For my fuel storage at home I'm running a bunch of older 2.5 gal plastic cans. I do have to burp them all along.

The cheapest gas can I can find is $18 US for 2.5 gallons and they are terrible, these are not priced unfairly for their size and quality.
