the axis is the imaginary line in the middle of the mattress while it spins. So the lyric basically means that he wishes when the mattress spins while he's lying there feeling alone, he will magically be moved to the girl's mattress to be with her. I've been a John Mayer fan for the longest time and for some reason, Edge of Desire has always been close to my heart. Two years ago, I fell in love with someone and we were in a long distance relationship. Whenever I used to miss him, I'd just text him the lyrics "Maybe this mattress, would spin on its axis and find me on yours". This year in January, we broke up. It's been so, so difficult to watch this video ever since. Somehow, I always end up watching this on a Sunday night. This reminds me of him and I don't want to associate this song with him anymore but it's tough. I didn't know where I was going when I started typing this comment, but I'd like to say one thing to everyone who's reading this comment (if someone *is* actually reading this hello lol) - cherish the love you have. Tell people that you love them. Don't give up on people who love you. Otherwise, like me, you'd be lying in bed, with your phone on your chest, waiting for it to go "brrrr, brrrr, brrrr" and trust me, that's not a good feeling.

@josepaucar34306 жыл бұрын
Yes!! He did it in Any Given Thurdays in 2002. I was looking for the video but i couldnt fin it, but I found the speech on internet, this is it. Hope you like it... "So I was thinkin' about relationships and about how it pertains to songs about relationships, And uh, I was trying to think, well it occurred to me that the key, I figured out the key to a relationship and how to make it work. Check it out, this is, this is, a tip from your uncle John, check it out. When you first meet somebody, you find out they like you, first of all, a friend of a friend of theirs say, he or she really really likes you, and it kills you, floors you, sends you to the ground, you've got to pick yourself up off the ground; then you get their phone number and you call them up, right, and you say "Yeah, that's a really great phone conversation, can I see you some time?" and then they say this, they say, "I'd like that." Nothing feels better than "I'd like that". So now, your blood pressures' goin, you're six feet off the ground, you can't sleep, because of "I'd like that". So then you hang out for a while, and you call and you talk on the phone all the time, and then you drop the bomb, what feels like the bomb, you say, "You know what, I've been thinkin about you a lot." And she goes, "Ahhhhhhh!" And you go "What happened?" and she goes, "I'm sorry, I just, I just, I just, that's, I've been thinking about you too." Bam. Higher into the sky. But now "I'd like that." Tch. Done. Now you're up to "I'm thinkin about you." Then however number of months pass, it makes you feel comfortable saying it, you say "I gotta tell you something." They go "What?", you go "I'm in love with you." And nothing in the world sounds better than "I'm in love with you." And then maybe she starts crying, or maybe he goes "*gasp*". And all the sudden you're like "I'm in." But now what doesn't work?; "I'd like that." and "I've been thinkin about you." Now we're at "I'm in love with you." Then maybe some day it'll move up to "I love you." Fast forward, now you're like "I love you a lot; I love you more than anything in life." Now "I love you." doesn't work. It's a threshold that keeps movin up. Fast forward, like six months, six weeks, whatever the case may be, now you're on like, "I want to marry you." "I want to impregnate you with my love." "I wanna, I wanna just send my love to you." "Damn it, words don't work anymore." And then you say this line, and you know, you know you've used this line before, "I just wish they'd put a new word in the dictionary bigger than love because love just doesn't describe what I feel." And so now he or she starts askin, "Do you love me?" and you start goin, "Of course I love you." "Well say it." And then it becomes "Say it twice." And it goes "Say it three times." And then, you cross a really interesting point, where all the sudden it becomes "I hate you, I hate you." And you go, "Oh my god she hates me." And now it's like "I hate you more than anything." And then it's like "We're over." And then they go "No we're not." And you go "Yes we are." Now the words completely do not work at all, you're left with nothing. You're throwing punches under water. You're done. You know what the moral of that story is, if there is one. Never, ever, ever, ever underestimate the power of "I'd like that." John Mayer

Okay John. I was seeing someone for over two years... Hopelessly fell in love with her ... Got my heart broken ... And it fucked me up . I stayed away from all these stuff for a while because I didn't want to go back to falling in love and getting my heart broken like that. But you know how it goes. You cross paths with interesting people as life goes on. Wasn't different in my case either. There's this girl in my class . I'm happy when I'm around her. I keep smiling from ear to ear which is something I have not done in a long time. Even though I know I like her , I'm scared to tell her . I've seen this video hundreds of times before . And every single time , the speech before the song gives me goosebumps. When I saw it now , it gave me the motivation to tell her how I really feel. I'm going to tell her tonight. It's a Sunday night after all. I might get my heart broken , maybe tonight, maybe later. But I don't care.. " Life is too short to keep playing the game. Because if you really want someone , you'll figure it out later " Thank you John. I love you ❤️ Edit 1 - 07/10/2019 Guess I have a girlfriend now :) Edit 2 - 30/06/2020 It did not work out. I'm gonna move away for higher studies and she moved for work. The pandemic took a toll on our mental health as well. :( but I do not regret anything. We still are great friends even though we've gone our separate ways Edit 3 - 25/03/23 Wow. Feels surreal writing this tbh. We've been pretty busy figuring shit out in the past couple of years but still kept in touch. And recently we started speaking quite often and it reached a point where we admitted to still having feelings for each other. The last time I met her was November of 2021. I'm gonna see her again in 5 days and I'm super excited about it. Wish us luck :) Edit 4 - 07/05/23 Leaving again for studies/work. She's busy with work as well. We've agreed on giving long distance a go and I'm really happy that things are finally starting to go in a good direction. Wish us luck. Edit 5 - 15/09/23 Long distance has it's ups and downs. We're going through our fair share of them as well. Edit 6 - 02/10/23 My heart is heavy when I'm typing this. We've decided to part ways. Is it what I want? No. But you don't always get what you want or things doesn't always work out the way you want them to. I feel like this thread has been a part of our relationship in a way, so I'm updating this. Life's hard rn. I hope I make it through.

@@ivessosa9298 My best guess is because as humans, we desire variety; in this case, being with different women. Even though you love this person, they are just ONE person and thus they are unable to satisfy one's craving for variety. So to say "Let me wish you were someone different" is to say 'let me wish you were someone else to trick myself into thinking i'm with another woman.', because ultimately, it is possible to get bored of the one you love. It all links back into what he said about life being too short to "Playing the game.

It's been almost 9 years since we dated, but we've seen each other here and there. This song resonated with me so hard during 7 of those years. We'd speak occasionally. We'd remain there for each other throughout all the boyfriends and the girlfriends. We'd often end up asleep in each other's arms on a couch after a night of partying with our mutual friends. But we'd say nothing about it. I moved away for 2 years and we have barely spoken these last 3. We spent one full day together last January, where everything came rushing back. The nostalgia the memories. We actually both planned just to catch up for an hour, but neither of us ordered the bill. Each time he waved at the waiter, I expected him to ask for the bill, but he said "another carlsberg please *turns to me* did you want another drink?". I saw john mayer live a few days ago, I remember telling myself during the set that if he sings edge of desire i'll take it as a sign to contact him. Or to tell him how i've felt all this time, because I never did. It was too much, and I couldn't trust him. But I loved him. Now.. I don't know.. there can't be love there we barely spoke in 3 years.. but there is residue. A yearning for the past. Well, john sang the song, but I couldn't message him. I just couldn't do it. 9 years of holding back, just to say it in text? Not to mention, He's in a relationship. But i'm here, listening to this again, 5 years later, thinking about him. It's bittersweet I guess.

I know this video is a decade old, but it is just so representative of a universal feeling today. I’m sort of a late bloomer Mayer fan and this song was always in my ear after first hearing it. I had always thought of this song as a cry for longing for your lover. Throughout my relationship with her, I would always talk about this song and how it made me just want to be with her, lie together on the couch, just letting the world disappear around us. Those moments were just so awesome. To feel like the world couldn’t do a damn thing to us. But it turns out it could. Ever since we broke, I’ve truly understood this song now. I don’t want to play the game. I want to tell her everything that’s in me, both the hurt and the love. But I can’t do it. I can’t reach out because all its going to do is bring more pain. Either way, I don’t think i’m going to hear the phone buzzing or ever hear her reach out. But that cry, “just come over, just come over, let me cry all over you, let me wish you were someone different” will ring true.

People who don't like his speeches can I have your concert tickets? :D I don't see what the problem is..his speeches add a lot to this experience of his shows. If you don't like hearing other people's opinions it's up to you. Considering the majority of the venue goes crazy for his speeches he will continue to do them. People care about what he has to say. If you don't then that's just too bad for you. Concerts are also very much about hands on communication with the fans. Plus it is used as a transition/ intro to the song in almost all cases. So. It is always a plus. It shows dedication. It's easy to just go up on stage and repeat songs. Communication with the audience is key.

It’s okay to argue. It’s okay to yell. It’s okay to be sad, angry, mad, jealous. It’s okay to cry. People always seem to forget that we are human. Far from perfect. Far from getting it right the first time. Johns songs really embody that idea of imperfection that’s why I keep coming back. Because imperfection is beautiful. And perfect is something I’ll never know

I always come back to this song when I my heart hurts, makes me wanna text my ex and tell her how much our relationship meant to me and how I want to start over. Never felt so in love with somebody before, just to watch her walk away with somebody else. Breaks my heart knowing there won’t ever be a second chance with her because of her unfaithful acts. “I want you so bad I’ll go back on the things I believe” is such a powerful line because I can feel that so badly, but in the end I know that will just break me again.

I have a story to tell. One month ago I wanted so bad to wright a message to a girl I didn’t know at the time. So I listened to this speech and it motivated me to do it. We spent one month getting to know each other but we never got further. But tonight I was watching live shows on my TV and this one came up again, it made me realize how much love deserves a hard try. I wrote back to the girl telling her I was coming to her home to kiss her. She was so surprised but she came out and we kissed under the rain like in a movie. Just to say that love exists, it’s just hidden behind the fear of the other and the lack of confidence. Music is a reminder that it’s true. Thank you so much John ❤️

This song. This performance. This intro. “Yup, come over”. That John’s voice is a little broken by this time in that tour, makes this performance even more meaningful.

sometimes speaking up isnt enough. if a person really dont like or love you im pretty sure words are just words to them. theres no emotion, no excitement, no meaning, nothing... but theres nothing wrong expressing out your feelings. you have this time and chance to say the words so you have to make up the most of it. thats what I did. but I ended losing myself and her. this song really reminds me of how love correctly works. if a person totally wants you, even if you dont say a word they will come over. if you want somebody give it a go or regret not doing anything. acceptance or rejection it doesnt matter because either ways you'll still live in this world full of pain and happiness.

It's impressive how he preserved his voice through this. You could tell in the opening speech that he only had so much left in the tank. Took a lower path on one of the choruses and went all in for the last one. He was probably 3-4 more big notes from blowing it out to no return, but kept just enough to finish the show strong.

I remember what time of my life I was when I found this video on KZbin. This John's speech made me feel butterfly in my stomach. Because I think it's really beautiful. I was with someone, nothing serious. And I thought we were going to be together sometime. 3 years later and 2 attempts of getting back, and now I'm single. This video means nothing to me anymore.
