Build a Cinema Rig for Your Canon M50!

In today's video I build out my Canon M50 Cinema rig. I use this for getting the most cinematic video footage out of my Canon M50 or Canon M50 Mark II. The rig includes the cage, microphone, audio recorder, top handle, side handle, and fill lighting.

Canon M50 with HDMI output does not carry the audio if you are using the Atomos Ninja V for external recording (the benefits are recording in better coded and longer recording time). Would the Big Microphone and Recorder that you suggested take care of this problem by recording the audio onto its SD card?

Yes, it would, but you wouldn't have an audio track in the video to easily/automatically sync in editing. So it could be done, would just have to manually line up the audio and the video, which isn't a big deal, but it is a little more fiddly.

What are your sound settings with that Boya microphone on your Canon M50 camera?

Manual, a bit above 1/2 on the gain, from memory. All the other special settings off.

How happy are you with the Zoom F1-SP. Reviews are quite mixed...

The worst thing about it is the dicky, seemingly fragile, battery door. Mine has held up so far, but it seems like a pretty poor design. Th over build quality, is good otherwise, the mic has some self noise, but it usable for my purposes. Where this unit shines is the versatility and price point. There isn't anything out there, that can do everything this setup can, and it's pretty reasonably priced. So if you need/want that versatility, I would highly recommend it. If you are after the highest quality audio, and don't need the versatility, I would look at something else.

@@ww1www I have traveled all over the world and the F1-SP, plus an extra lapel mic, is all I bring. I have lots of other, "better", audio gear, but for the space this setup takes up, nothing can compete.

I love the video. The only thing I don't like is that you are vague with the names of some of the equipment, such as the lens. Which forces you to go to the description. I get it with the affiliate links which you didn't mention in the video, for you to make money but you should still describe the names and relative details. Still thank you for the great video. Honestly, as a dude with a couple of cameras who knows very little about using them beyond basic point and shoot -- we shot a few interviews, a couple of years ago, in less than ideal conditions and had to fight to clean up the audio, but that's about the closest we ever came to "pro" usage -- this has kinda blown my mind. I actually saw another video talking about V-Mount batteries, which intrigued me and got me wondering if they were something I could use with my cameras ... and that led me here. I had never considered -- never even really knew -- that building a rig like this around even our modest M50 was a possibility. This has opened up a whole world of options for me. 🙂

That not unusual, even with higher end cameras.

The amount that first microphone is shaking really does show that you didnt test this at all. Theres no way that audio would be usable

It’s a shock mount, so you get some movement, but no noise comes from the movement. It is a directional mic, but not so direction that the movement causes any issues. This is actually how that microphone is designed to work.
