This is really nice starter woodworking project. It looks really nice. The 5 degree taper was a great idea. Great job, Jon!

I like how you approach this more as a conversation, how you approached it, and making decisions along the way. That's how many of us work, too. I like the 5 degree taper, but not the overhang. Loved the dovetails. I would have mortised the lateral support into through tenons in the sides and made a central slot in the top to fit a hand vs. two teeny finger holes. The cherry was gorgeous. I think I'll go make a stool. Thanks for the motivation, Jon!

That step stool turned out great Jon! We all make those little mistakes along the way! Making things is just part of the overall learning process! Thanks for those plans! 👍👍😉😉

The stool turned out beautiful...especially for such a utility project. Love that you were about to repurpose that cherry. I've not used the combo of sapele and cherry before...I like it!

Beautiful little project and i have to say, some of the reasons I like your videos are... 1. Direct communication, not a lot of fluff. 2. If there's a mistake, you share it for us to learn 3. Part of the enjoyment of building, creating, making is doing it as you think about it in real-world time. Not everything has to be from exact planning. Thanks for all you do.

Thank you, Jon! I don't like using a metal router dovetail jig (tried two or three brands), and don't always have the motivation for handsaw and chisel, so I should give your method a try. Isn't woodworking all about dealing with little goofs along the way? As always, a very inspiring session in your shop!

Looks like a great practice piece. I just watched your jig build as well. I've tried a router jig, but I got too much blowout when using plywood. This method should work fine with plywood. I'll give it a go, I'll use my scroll saw until I get a bandsaw. Why would anyone make dovetails in plywood? Well, why not practice making dovetails when building essential shop furniture? Also I was very surprised that I can get Bloxygen here in Australia, and it's not expensive! I'm definitely going to give it a go. I've had problems with varnish and Danish oil forming a skin. It should also save PVC cement from setting hard in the container! It seems to me it will save me both money and time.

Love seeing a project build! Very nice results. I was curious if you are worried about the top overhang splitting off along the grain direction under foot? I was thinking that some dowels or pegs sunk perpendicular to the grain direction along the face could add some insurance. Also, with some contrasting woods could add a style element.
