It has lived in our kitchen ever since and is as solid and functional now as it was then. I decided to make another one, and this time document the process with a video. I had intended originally to do a faithful historic duplicate, but the original shaker stools that I found in books are really quite large --- too large for our average modern house with 8foot ceilings. So I had to scale down the design to just 19 inches tall. So instead of a shaker step stool, it is a shaker inspired design. I'm very happy with the results, and the fact that the original is still going strong at age fifteen is a pretty strong endorsement. You might be able to build these just from following along in the video, but I do have detailed plans available at a modest cost. Really like the simple functional design. I’m with you on the contrasting wood it looks great. This is an item that will end up in a family member’s home in a hundred years time, have you considered pencilling somewhere inconspicuous the details of when where who, so that there will be a connection for following generations?

I used a "tung 'n teak" oil the first time, which is similar to danish oil.

Why the brad nails vs dowels for the top step? Didn’t know if it was just personal choice or what. It’s a cool technique either way. Just curious

The little pin nails just keep it from slipping while being glued. The glue provides all the strength needed.

If you need metric just do a rough conversion. 12 inches roughly to 300 mm and so on.

Hmmm. Two step stools? A helium balloon party? Love the stools but I usually do things alone and can't find someone else who wants to join me when I'm on a stool changing a bulb or getting that Turkey platter down ..🤣.🤣 Nice build. I tend to prefer Craftsman style but..Shaker is OK.
