Great job on the shuttle. I like the texture the tape gives for the thermal blankets and the weathering you did. Thanks for sharing!

Absolutely impressive work. After seeing the Enterprise, Endeavour and Discovery in the last few months I really want to give this model a go and I'm glad to have learned some lessons from your build. This is such an impressive build and you should be very happy with what you have made Phil!

Awesome video, Phil. I really look forward to all your model videos. I have this model waiting for me to tackle, and I'm glad I saw your video. You've given us a lot of good ideas for making the model even better than what you get out of the box as well as great tips for coming up with a realistic looking finished product. I'm definitely going to get the aftermarket decals for an even better look. Thanks for putting the video together!!

Hi Phil, the addition of the thermal blankets gives the shuttle a great extra level of realism. The streaking on the lower tiles does make it look like they been through the atmosphere a couple of times. Excellent work.

I'm convinced when this kit came out somewhere in the early 80s they had a textured molded underside. KUDOS for hanging with this one but raised tile detail would have allowed for some dry brushing to bring out the tiles.

I watched this with interest as i abandoned my Monogram 1/72 shuttle ages ago, it's basic and has giant picture windows for the cabin!! But i found a guy on youtube who showed an easy fix and you have encouraged me to give it a go with the model. I love your three-foot rule, sure it looks rough under the magnifying glass of the big TV but step back and damn it looked real! But what finish for an in orbit model, NASA or MOONRAKER!😁

You believe that the result is only successful at three feet distance and that it is not successful in the camera, but let me tell you that even on camera, the result is very impressive and wonderfully successful, you are an accomplished artist and you can be very proud of this artwork😊 thank you to shared it

This turned out great! I picked up the Tamiya 1/100 kit last year but quickly got overwhelmed with the research and the endless amounts of detail that has to be packed into those things (and trying to decide which specific mission and look to recreate, which is apparently another thing you're supposed to do for these), but your build makes me want to give it another try now.

Outstanding results. Will use some of your techniques and aftermarket parts when I get to the 1/72 in the stash. Last year I used warbird decals for a 1/144 Challenger tribute. Very good though kind of delicate

Awesome Phil! Really turned out great. Like you, I'm very fond of the space shuttle as well. I'll have to build this someday. I'll definitely use your idea for the thermal blanket. I think I'll use spray Adhesive to lay it down with. Having fun with the new printer? Hope your mother is doing well.

a v notch cut in the foam would have made a fine cradle to hold the ship. and I would have been tempted to paint the outer edges of the decal area on the ship black so any gaps would be pre blackened. Now i see the decals aren't backed in white, so nevermind

The first shuttle I had was the 1/44 Airfix Moonraker - and 1/44 revell with the 747 - which I was lucky enough to see when it toured the UK in the 80s But it's the Monogram 1/72 with tanks in the stash that I will build one day as Moonraker 5. I prefer the look of the movie prop to the reality of the actual 'scruffy' shuttle.

Well, I'm sad that this build is completed as it was a blast to follow! I really liked the effects of that surgical tape, and it really comes together once the entire model is completed. For your next Shuttle build do you think you'll try building the Revell-Monogram kit that comes with the booster rockets? This build has really got me more invested in a Shuttle build of my own. I've got the kit, but the Warbird decals are out of stock at the moment. But looking at my own kit, it's an early version of the shuttle, and it's tempting me to get a second one, and built it as a later version, especially if it has the Canadarm on it :)
@sprueVerse2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! I definitely want to build the R/M kit with its rocket/booster config. I would definitely have to work on those windows though!
@sci_tec2 жыл бұрын
@Phill have you tested putting the decals directly on the thermal blankets to see what they would look like?
@sprueVerse2 жыл бұрын
I did try and they would not lay down or stay down. I even tested a PVA water mix and several types of decal fixative and all ended with the decal deterioration.
@colossalbigfoot2562 жыл бұрын
The molded panel lines really helped the heat tiles. Are those the new sets available on the web? There’s a new printing process in China where they can print in 3D so to speak. It’s not a resin printer but is something they won’t divulge. I’m trying to work with him doing tile because I have the older kit with boosters. There’s no tile detail molded in.
@sprueVerse2 жыл бұрын
All my panel lines were hidden by the cloth tape. I’ve heard about the new 3D process but my after market nose section is not that!
@colossalbigfoot2562 жыл бұрын
@@sprueVerse yeah it’s really good. I work in 64th scale and they do some racing harness belts that are insane detail. You know anyone in US offering the service? I’ve had my Challenger model forever. Tells you how old the kit is.. it was before they removed the Challenger decals.

No…I think China still is the place.

Phil, I think you are being a little hard on yourself. That model is way more than a 6. It's easily an 8...maybe an 8.5. I love the weathering and the blankets look awesome. The overall effect is VERY realistic. I am sure you have learnt a lot and will make the next version at least a 9.5

Spotting the word finale, means all these idea are a bit late. But! Better etc. than etc. Goofy idea 1: When decals are to be laid on the medical tape-- paint a layer of Mod Podge on top. The basic Podge dries mat but some of the other flavors dry gloss. Worth some experimentation, I think. Goofy idea 2: Vac form over some medical tape with thin sheet sty. There's your texture and the right material to decal onto. My thought for my own soon-to-be build is to carve up some texture to the smaller scale (choice of 200 and 144) and vac form over it to make large sheets of basic texture. Goofy idea 3: Those pesky lifting edges of medical tape... damn them! I say, try a very thin applicator, like the edge of some thin stock, styrene or brass-- to apply some CA, forcing it down. If you use a small block of teflon and shape it to a fine edge, you can lay down some accelerator with a small applicator. The CA won't stick. Love the giant decals-- certainly a labor of love by the creator and you make their placement seem easy. Well... fairly straightforward anyway. Satisfying version of the good ship Discovery. Textures are very nice. Your impact splatter looks very convincing.

Just to my eye the medical tape 'blanket(s)' look somewhat over scale! But then again, it's not my model, and I would not know of anything else that you could use. But I guess I will have to watch the rest of te video to see how it turnes out! Now I wonder who we might know, who could make some kind of masking sets that would allow you to Spray the shuttle name(s) onto the fabric? Hummm! Lou D perhaps!? lol

I totally agree with you on the scale issue. I really struggled with that!

I would skip the medical tape you will not like how it makes the model sticky from the glue they use .If you want the heat tiles to look ideal then use black self adhesive foam that way you can use a heated x-acto knife to cut your tiles and the heat makes them stand out individually a little airbrushing and a white pen in the numbers for the ties and your golden

Great work. Frankly, I've never seen anything so confused, verbose and poorly laidout as the Lake County sheets. I mean I'm thankful for them and I am using them but they are so needlessly complex in terms of poor diagrams, incorrect labeling, pages of instructions that are so confused and unhelpful.....they are really a mess. The late era white sheet instructions and the actual sheet that came with it don't comport at all....
