@@floridarusticrepairs Seeing the Porter-Cable 146B in action has to be one of the highlights of my weekend. Though I am less fanatical about Skil brand tools, I look forward to the exploration of the 1950s worm drive saw. Now that you have two nice work benches, have you thought of building a 'rough' one for sorting through rusty items?
@floridarusticrepairs17 күн бұрын
@@rightlanehog3151 That 146B is a great saw! The perfect size for most cutting. What I do on the workbenches for the dirty jobs is use cardboard or plastic bin covers but yes, on this workbench I'll be a bit more careful.
@rightlanehog315117 күн бұрын
@@floridarusticrepairs The balance, smoothness and longevity of this generation of Porter-Cable saws, of which the 146B was the last example, will never be matched. It is really not an exaggeration to say the quality of these tools goes down to the molecular level. For cutting plywood and 2X lumber they are a treat. Having used the bigger and heavier 168A 8 1/4" saw for decades, cutting with the nimble 146A is almost a guilty pleasure. My occasional views of Craigslist etc reveal they are still out there at reasonable prices. In regard to the work benches, I am sure you will take good care of them.

@@rightlanehog3151 Thanks for the info on the 146B. I agree that it's the perfect size. Coming up next week, I do routine maintenance on the 4" Porter Cable from one of the tool hauls. Another one of my favorites.

It looks perfect. Those lights should stop any shadows. I think it will be great for the tool restorations. Thanks for bringing us along.

Thanks for tuning in! I need to figure out good camera angles when using this setup. The lighting is great but it's cumbersome to manage the camera.

Very ingenious!

Thanks! The hardest part was actually getting it upright. it turned out to be a lot heavier than I had anticipated.

@@floridarusticrepairs I thought it might fall over and land on the car. Sort of the tree falling the wrong way and landing on the house.

@@alberteurs1501 I was thinking the same thing the entire time I was raising it up which is why I ended up removing the casters for the lift. I did eventually roll a heavy toolbox beside it on one side and the workbench on the other side to stop it from swaying. I put some boxes in place to cushion the fall but when it went over they proved to be unnecessary.

DUDE! I thought I had a lot of Craftsman boxes. Can we get a count of yours in the garage?

Good to see Mugsy came to supervise
@floridarusticrepairs18 күн бұрын
Mugsy loves coming in to see what I'm up to. I tried giving him a cat bed to sleep on but he just naps on the bench instead. Typical cat. 😺
@michaelsurratt959318 күн бұрын
You need to put some beds in for Mugsy and friends, maybe a small rolling cart (a use for the non standard casters) put a food and water section below, a second story for beds (I call them “wireless chargers”). On the side, build steps to make it easier for them to get up and down. Good little project(s). Make it easier and more comfortable for your supervisors, especially as they age . Like 2’ x 2’ x 3’???
@floridarusticrepairs18 күн бұрын
That would be a great project! With cats there's no guarantee they'll use it. I did put a nice cat bed in there but so far they choose to only sleep on the benches or on the floor.
@michaelsurratt959318 күн бұрын
@ if they are like mine, it would take a few weeks of being afraid of it, ignoring it, sniffing it, then using it. As mine have aged, I didn’t think they would use steps. What I just mentioned happened and they love steps now.

Nice! I like it! 👍 I like the hight of the peg board. The addition of the boxes underneath has me thinking that the bench top and lower braces is enough that you can maybe? cut out the lower board in front of the boxes. Little more foot room and not sure if that would allow the lower boxes to role out? Rolling the bench around tells me you had a great crew pour that slab!
@floridarusticrepairs18 күн бұрын
Thanks! I had planned on removing that lower board but have found that it makes a great foot rest when I'm standing there so I'll likely keep it in. I agree, the concrete slab is level and smooth. They did a great job.

Nice work bench. So the items on the pegboard is wall art? Seems awfully hard to reach to be able to use on a daily basis. I like the tool boxes underneath. Thanks for the video
@floridarusticrepairs18 күн бұрын
Thanks! Yes, essentially the peg board on the bench itself is a bit difficult to reach since the bench is four feet deep so I just set a lot of it to display. The tool sets at the bottom and the drills and wrenches to the right are all easily within reach and are used. I got the twin tool boxes at an estate sale and in that garage they were under a workbench and I figured that would work for me someday. It took me six months but I finally got them under a my own workbench.

Ratchet straps from the ceiling to tilt it up? I have used that method to lift a lawn tractor to change the blades. Might work for that pretty well too, for next time of course.
@floridarusticrepairs17 күн бұрын
Thanks! I had thought of using straps but the ceiling beams are just tubular steel so I wasn't sure if they could pull the weight.
