Cam following, telescoping, power actuated butterfly door hinges! That is the name of the game in this video, as I build some prototype hinges to solve clearance and sealing problems with the Arete Project doors.

@@pivotalevent well I am not sure about that Jay. yes the dihedral door was inventive and unique at the time but it uses a fixed arc. This one doesn't. Thoughts?

Really like the idea of using the transfer case chain as flexible but strong hinge/strap.

Thanks. If it works out I can later recreate it in laser cut aluminum pieces, as it is a bit heavy for its size.

Super neat to see the hinge mechanism coming together! Thinking about doors got me wondering what you'll be doing for locks, if you'll have a remote key fob for the locks, and then what you'll be doing for a computer in the car. So many fun problems to look forward to seeing you tackle!

Hi. I'm not so much of a car guy as some. I'm here because I like sculpture, building techniques and aesthetics. You're doing a massive project here that's really impressive. I have a lot of regard for this. I have a question about the initial maquette in clay that was a foot or two long. It seems to have blown up full size quite well, aesthetically. Did you ever think that such a small model might not translate so well visually into the full size body? To detail what I mean - I can imagine that something that you might not have noticed on the small version would have stood out in a negative way once it was blown up. I don't mean obvious, specific features, but a combination of subtle scale relationships might have become glaring once made large.
@pivotalevent2 жыл бұрын
True that the translation in scale is a problem, however this methode is only to get a rough full scale version. Most of the serious design and finalisation is done at the full scale. This is why even the big auto manufacturers build a full size clay. If you start out knowing exactly what you want to build (say a reproduction of something existing- "copy") then it is better to have it CNC carved from foam. Thanks for watching!

That upper hinge will not work properly due to it swinging freely. In order for such a hinge to work, it's mandatory to feature hinge segments with integrated gears so that they will lock to each other and rotate gradually as you bend the hinge. Lenovo YOGA 3 Pro uses such a geared hinge.

I don’t quite get the chain thing, it will be interesting to see how that comes together.

Just wondering. Im preparing to make replica Stradale 33. I think i've figure it mostly. The biggest bump is front/rear windshield and side windows. How are you planing to solve that problem with your car.
@BuilderCreator2 жыл бұрын
The glass is by far the hardest problem to solve in creating a replica. Often replacement glass for the original car is just not available. If you own an original Alfa 33s you are wealthy enough to have the glass manufactured, just for you, and likely at a cost of more than you will spend on the entire replica build. My solution, was to design around an inexpensive existing replacement glass. (97 Chevrolet Cavalier windshield). The moving glass will be tempered flat glass (inexpensive to have made) and the fixed parts of the side glass will be drape formed out of polycarbonate. Drape forming is probably the direction you are going to have to go as you have chosen the most glass intensive and complicated "greenhouse" glass auto ever built. Ha! Luckily the original Stradale used acrylic for the side glass (with the lapped edge side vents rather than sliding glass) so you can duplicate that fairly easily. Acrylic or polycarbonate is perfectly fine for fixed glass, but for moving glass and windshields subject to wipers and bugs the plastics get scratched up pretty fast. Additionally, most jurisdictions, if they allow home builts on the road, do still require the windshield to be safety glass. The last time, many years ago, that I looked into having a complex windshield made it was going to be over $20K USD. In my opinion, you would have to build multiple cars to justify the price of setting up that tooling. You might look into seeing if you can purchase a windshield from the kitcar manufacturers of the Superlight. not an exact fit and you will have to adjust your design some, but a lot closer to the original Stradale than a Chevrolet Cavalier. At any rate, beautiful car - Good luck!

@@BuilderCreator thanks a lot for your time taking to write such an extensive comment. I appreciate it very much. Ha! Even if i do have money to purchase original Stadale, there is no way buying it since only 4 of those are made and all are owned by museums. 3/4 if im not mistaking are owned by Alfa Romeo Museum in Milano. Car is so rare that even there only 20 "licensed" replicas are made. I've got in tuch with grandson of the guy that made it, asked me 5k € for blueprints and another 5 for moldings. I was like, no way. Bought 1/8 Burago replica and worked my way in to making blueprints through AutoCad and SolidEdge. Yup you are about right about the costs. With current prices growth, ive calculated around 25k € for production, another 15k-20k € in paperwork to make it street legal. There is a lot of calculations and tests required by the traffic agency. Another 2k for homologation... But, glass is not included in the costs, only thing not figured how to solve. Again thank you for your time for replying to my comment. It is very helpful. Ps fun fact. I came across an information, that one of those 20 replicas is sold in Spain in 2010/2011 for 850k €.

A sugges… The hinge C piece (printed red plastic cam) would be better CNC’ed, cast alloy part will be prone to cracking and is a high stress, safety part. Just send your 3d print file to a machine shop, it shouldn’t take long or cost too much. A door falling off can cause damage to the car and passenger 🤷
