Every room in our 18th century Dowers Cottage needs an overhaul. We’re nearly finished renovating the first bedroom when our HUGE fireplace mantle arrives to take center stage in the room. There’s no rest for the wicked though so while we’re waiting for the carpet to arrive, we launch our next project: transforming a tiny space into a functional bathroom. We tackle everything ourselves from plumbing, plastering, electrical, heating, and tiling. Lots of easy and affordable tips on creating a beautiful and practical space.

Oh my god I know that trauma of not wanting to leave the house due to a water pipe fail! Two weeks after I settled on my first house and three days before I was meant to move in, a water pipe burst in the roof and flooded for three days and no one know because I wasn’t there yet! I drove up and could hear the waterfall too. And it was literally gushing out from UNDER the eaves on the outside. And the doorstop. I opened the door and the ceiling had collapsed! Damage everywhere. It was so traumatising!!! Luckily insurance kicked in and I had some help to renno the rest and eventually sold and got somewhere else but I think it took my about three years to get over the anxiety whenever it rained or I turned on water. I kept expecting a random pipe to burst somewhere and ruin my life! Even now I’m SUPER paranoid about leaks and will spot a tiny leak in something a mile away. It’s the worst feeling isn’t it! I feel for you. The faulty pipe trauma club 😂

Love the video guys, it's so great seeing you in a longer video form like this after Insta for the last few years. You're both naturals on camera! Q about the shower though - do you not have to use a waterproofing membrane before tiling? (I think called tanking in the UK). It's mandatory in Australia, but I know countries have different regulations.

Aww thanks! No you don’t, we do a waterproofing membrane in the shower area, but as it’s not a ‘wet room’ because we will have a shower door and screen we don’t have to do that ☺️

Ah installing tile is so finicky! My husband and I have a large basement bathroom to do but the foundation isn’t perfectly level so we are absolutely dreading it. You two make it look so simple! I love the marble tile it’s so clean and classic elegance.

Like Borja said in the last video, never heard of sealing the marble BUT the marble specialist in Italy did say that different marbles and granite have different porosity so some stones are not ideal for bathrooms or kitchens. The chemicals in shampoos or cleaning products can damage it as well.

A tip on the underfloor heating explained to me by our electrician. We had a problem with the underfloor heating which was under limestone tiles, a poor electrician had wired it incorrectly and blown the sensor. Our god electrician got around it by fitting a room thermostat to the heating wiring but said that when he was training he was told to fit 2 sensors so if one fails the system can be repaired.

Love the tiles. We have done the same as you in our bathrooms using a mix of limestone and marble and it hasn't dated. We have just redone a guest ensuite and this time I used a painted cabinet in a bold jade to pick up on colours in the adjoining bedroom. Even if I get tired of the cabinet it is easy to paint it a different colour and change the look. Love what you are doing but don't quite understand where the dower house is in relation to the estate. Is this covered in an earlier video?
