This video shows the process of building sliding barn doors to replace an existing door in a home. Jay gets wood from Jaime’s and prepares the boards by flattening, jointing, and planing them. He then cuts the boards to size and assembles them into two door panels using pocket hole screws. Hardware is installed including hinges and a track system. The doors are stained and finish coated before being installed. Viewers learn skills for wood preparation and door construction. Challenges like mismatched board sizes and installing hardware are discussed. The finished doors receive approval from the Steph who was surprised by the project.
Here is link to Barn Door Hardware I used in the Video:

The wood prep was great. This is how I should have gone after. You leave the panel a little wider a little longer. GLUE The panel, straightline on jointer or with a plunge saw. Then cut it to length. You may need a piece of metal 3/16 x 1 1/4 so your panel doesn't cup, that face on one side may not be enough to keep it straight. You cut a notch on the face piece to hide the metal. Glue the face on, use 2 nails to keep it from moving and clamp the pieces.

Jay, love the doors! You did a great job and I knew Stephanie would love them. Thank you for keeping them natural😊. Only one comment and hubby said it and I agreed, you need to put a second knob on the other door so it looks symmetrical. She could use either knob to pull, but it looks unbalanced with only one knob. Again GREAT JOB!!!

At first I thought you were absolutely right that knob should be close to the hinge. Until the very end of video when you closed the door. It's better near the hinge for opening, it's better in the middle of the panel for closing door. I think I would put the knob 1/3 of width the panel from the hinge.

I'm no builder or anything but I wonder if putting the knob in the same position on the other door might have been a better choice, that way when it opens the knob is facing outwards and won't catch on your clothes or whatever. Look, either way, what an amazing job Jay! Totally the right choice on the clear coat, that's some beautiful timber right there, be a shame to try and cover it with a stain. Looks amazing. Kudos from Melbourne Australia.

Someone else had said that same thing. Never thought about the knobs sticking into the opening? I guess it would make sense to put on the other door. Just don’t know if you would get the same pull effect on the other door. Thanks for the pro tips and thanks for watching.

It was devastating at the time but Jaime (that's how his name is spelled in their about us section of their website) has been my biggest inspiration for overcoming fears on the job site. He acknowledged his accident and showed his rehab process and even outside of work has figured out how to swap hands for playing guitar after his accident with the jointer. He's inspired me to be more proactive in using the tools but being safe about learning the dangers. I'm honestly curious what earbuds he currently uses for hearing protection and how loud music is since his accident was because he had hearing protection in and didn't realize the jointer was still running which was what caused the mistake in the first place

I rolled a 4 wheeler years ago, broke my arm and dislocated my elbow, as soon as I got home from getting the cast on I went to work fixing it so it would be ready to ride again. He knows the machine wasn't the cause of the accident. It was operator error, and as far as I remember he's got safeties in place now to prevent a similar occurrence in the future

I am so glad that I am not the only one who had a hard time with this. I used to cringe anytime he was near it. I don’t do that anymore. I think it’s because he worked to hard on his recovery that his robot hand is just his hand now and I try not to think about the accident anymore.
