I agree with this 100%. I tell customers 330 hp on shit California gas, 390 with E85. If all is right, this is track day safe. A little more is possible for short duration like street use. This is if the tuning is perfect, the fueling, cooling, and everything else is great, and the engine is in good shape to start with. At higher power levels you are one knock event from killing it so it is all about the tuning. The tuner has to be smart and understand Subarus.

As a dyno guy... I seem to see that 430whp is about the end of what may stay together(stock block daily), and that's assuming good fuel and not doing sustained side to side G-Load. After that I feel it always benefits the user doing something more substantial in the block/heads/gaskets. Depending on the "stock block" year/type though, you could be only safe around 350whp...
@Smeedia2 ай бұрын

Hey, I got a question I hope you can answer! I hate to ask forums because I know the hate I will get lol. I have a 2012 WRX Hatchback in rally blue that I love. It went from 49K to 215k without a single issue other than the clutch, brakes, tires, and headlamps. Now it has low compression in a cylinder. The car itself is in great condition. No rust, no tears inside, carpets have been always covered by mats, etc. I want to drive the car but inspection won't pass due to engine fault with cylinder. I'm curious, should I just buy an engine from eBay? They say compression is between 130-140 in all cylinders, and the engine looks VERY clean, but not clean to the point where they cleaned it just for photos... It is USDM but they don't know the mileage :( OR do you think I should rip apart my engine and rebuild the short block? I have the money but I don't want to stick too much money into this... but there is an ROI, and that is I get to drive my truck less... if I keep driving my truck, the worth of it is going to decrease more than the cost to put in a new engine into my Subaru and drive that instead. I'm good with my hands, I have tools, I've done this work before but not on Subaru (Mitsubishi is where my mechanic experience comes from), I have a truck, I have a place to work on it, etc.

The crevice volume (area between the top of the piston and the compressio ring) of a oversquare engine like the EJ is naturally bigger and thus increases hydrocarbon emissions. Gas gets stuck between the cylinder walls and the pistons, then get expulsed on the exhaust stroke. This is why Subaru had to use small ringlands, higher up on the pistons, which makes them weaker, especially during detonation events.

I need an opinion: I am daily driving an 05 sti, Freshly rebuiilt heads and new block at Auto Science, a trusted subie shop near me. Although the block is stock, the internals are wiseco forged, and its tuned very well at 24 psi on a blouch 1.5xtr on Flex Fuel @ 440hp If daily driven normally with the occasional pull, would the motor last a while? Theres also a million other supporting mods like Killer b ELH, pickup, baffled pan, AOS, Oil cooler, etc

Very Educational. Any chance this video can be made for wrx FA20 I’m at 371hp/349tq on flex fuel tune Dmann with some other bolt ons thanks either way I love me some cur purts ✌🏼

Speaking on built 2.5’s sticking a 2.5 in a 05 wrx, I have decided to just go that route so I can have more head room for power. Would you do the hybrid or make 2.5 heads work? I’ve seen parts to make the 2.5 heads work just can’t find a good enough set of castings to use
@Smeedia2 ай бұрын
Personally I would just use 2.5 heads. You can scoop D25 heads for a decent price on market place or eBay. You can do a hybrid set up if you want to. Don’t see it done as much anymore but can definitely do so if you want to 🫡

@@Smeedia I’ll have to keep looking, I’ve decided it’s probably better to just build a 257 vs building a 205 lol

What are your thoughts on the FA20 motor? I remember COSWORTH did thousands of hours of research on that motor when they built the supercharger kit for it and they said “top power safe and reliable is 240.”
@fatalscape2 ай бұрын
Do you think a block that suffered head gasket failure could be saved by being machined - bore/hone and decking? I'd like to put some power, 300 daily on pump gas, into the car but I'm not sure if I can use the core I've got or if it would just be better buying something from Outfront or IAG.

Totally as long as it’s not overly warped you should be solid to send it out for machine work 🫡

What are your thoughts on a open deck block with forged pistons & rods? What is the power threshold/realizability in your opinion for that set up
@AudioHead8092 ай бұрын
Dang brother I wanted to keep my sti stock because I was scared to blow it up lol. I’m a pretty conservative driver but wouldn’t hate more power. You think I should shoot for 350whp with bolt ons? To add I only have pump gas around me. Also I’m in Connecticut so I’m not sure who to use for a tune. I don’t want to go to Mike botti though lol. Been there done that.
@Smeedia2 ай бұрын
I would feel pretty confident about 350, been done numerous times in the past. Plenty of good tuners out there as well!

@@AudioHead809this was my set up. Non ra block. 360whp. 2015 STI with Killer B Headers, Cobb 20g Turbo, Invidia Q300 Catback (stock downpipe), 1050 injectors, ETS TMIC, Killer B hard inlet, Koyo Radiator, Cobb Intake, IAG AOS, Cobb Uppipe, AEM 340 fuel pump, VSC radiator hoses, 04 STI fuel regular, Grimspeed turbo heat shield, and Grimspeed 3port. @@Craiggg12345 dude thanks for all that info! I screenshot it so I can basically follow the build on my 2017 sti. Are the killer b headers something you think I should do no matter what? I love the rumble but if the equal length headers mean better drivability, better for the engine and easier to reach that power then I’ll use them for sure. Also why the 04 sti fpr if you don’t mind me asking.

This isn’t so much a stock motor as such but more a stock turbo question. I’m currently running a pw verticooler and turbosmart have plumb back bov on my stock turbo 09 Forester XT. Currently I don’t think the stock car is making enough boost to open the piston in the bov, making the car “dose” to an extent. Should I be worrying about compressor surge destroying the td04? For reference the car has 86k miles
@Smeedia2 ай бұрын
I wouldn’t stress it much tbh, you might see accelerated wear but nothing that should be radical or immediate. Does the BPV have an adjustment to it?

@@Smeediathe current one I’m running does not. I’m going to switch back to my GFB Response, missing the sound of it all. With the gfb I wouldn’t expect to have any issues with it right?

comments on the ej20x? everybody hates them but they have forged crowns on the pistons, forged rods and crank, and a better turbo. idk why everybody hates them, at its heart its just a better ej205 from the factory

There's no such thing as a forged crown. Stop perpetuating this damn bs.

@Smeedia - Who do you recommend/use for a dyno tune in the Seattle/Everett/Tacoma area?

Kinda curious, for the crank shaft, do you tend to re-use the crank shaft from a blown up engine? Or are they a part where you can't use the old one ever
@Smeedia2 ай бұрын
Nope I always toss and use new. New cranks aren’t too spendy.

Tbh depends on the Porsche engine. The turbos and most newer ones use dry sumps. On some older P cars the cylinders actually bolt onto the case halves
