O M G ! You really had me going when you "tasted" the adhesive! Great joke on us all! This dinghy is really taking on a life of its own and I am enjoying watching you build her piece by piece. Reminds of a time long ago when my Dad built we boys a little boat for us to play around in. Our biggest wish was to have a small outboard motor for it one day. On a Christmas morning, under the tree, there it was.......a CLINTON 2 HP motor for our very own! Motored around many a harbor back in the day and never could thank Dad enough for such a great present. Later on Dad went through many a Seagull motor that sounded like an old sewing machine! Thanks for bring all of those memories back for me sir! Oh yes, so nice to see your helper lending a hand for her Daddy!

Yep, of course. Cloth and epoxy went on the individual panels before final assembly. Another thin coat was brushed on afterwards as well. It would be possible to do afterwards, but it'd be a real pain in the patooty.

First - Great video and a marvelous first attempt at fiberglass work. Now - right to it... I work in aerospace and have seen bad things happen quickly with fiberglass use. You should proabably have Molly (and you for that matter) in at least safety glasses if not also long sleeves, and perhaps even a respirator. One mishap with the brush flicking epoxy in her eyes and she could lose their use. Also, epoxy can cause one to develop an alergy or sensitivity to it with repeated exposure to the skin and or vapors - probably worse for a child. Once developed one is unable to ever use epoxy again - once acquired, I've never seen it go away. It can happen literally overnight. Epoxy is not tremendously dangerous and limited exposure usually does not harm you- but it should be respected. Sorry for the rain, but I felt compelled to at least mention it to you. Have fun with it. Chris Clark
@Sailboatstory6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the concern, and yes - you are correct about safety. I'm not completely irresponsible concerning epoxy safety, but it's an oddity how the scenes with her in the respirator oversized safety goggles fail to make the final cut. Fact of the matter is, yes, it only takes 1 mistake. I'll do better. :) -B

Nice Ben! What keeps the centerboard from dropping through the centerboard well and will you do the Laser modification? The Laser Mod is a bungee cord that goes around the mast and centerboard to hold it up at various heights hands free. It's good for beach landings.
@Sailboatstory6 жыл бұрын
Right now, the daggerboard has a rope handle. The rope can't go through the slot, so that will keep it from going all the way through. The height will be adjustable with a bungie that I will mount to the bulkhead behind the daggerboard trunk. Of course, all that is just in theory right now, but it seems workable.
@raykiii6 жыл бұрын
You should have this finished just in time for nice weather. Good timing on your part.

Yeah! I don't think there are too many people that can even recognize a RATT song. Good ear! Yeah, I'll do some trial runs at the lake to get used to the boat. We'll probably do another 1-way Budget truck trip when we head back out again.

The guy that said the wood will suck up the resin.....deleted his comment just before my post and I wanted to say that you're doing a good layup job Ben. No worries Ben....you used a wet layup and the wood will stop sucking the syrup-thick epoxy as soon as it begins to thicken or cure (about 15-20 minutes depending on which working time hardener you used), and that cure is faster in the wood than in the cloth (wood holds in the curing heat). This guy may be thinking of polyester resins, which are thinner than the epoxy resin mix. You're doing just fine......
@Sailboatstory6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for saying that, Ed. I deleted that comment after blocking that fella. He’s been a long-time complainer, nitpicker, and chronic know-it-all. My patience ran out and I had to put an end to that. I’m all for constructive criticism, but his feedback was never constructive. Whew - Lord bless the folks who have to live with people like that. Anyhoo - That’s good to hear from you. I really feel like, if anything, I probably put on too much epoxy. This dinghy is far from perfect, just like me ;) but overall, I think it’ll be a great little tender for our next adventure. Thanks again, Ed.
@kirenireves6 жыл бұрын
In the last video, I also asked about pre-soaking the wood with resin. Glad I wasn't the fellow in question who you blocked, because I'm a BIG fan. ^_^ All love and support for the three fleas who live in sand. ^_^ " Since the big boat is the "Sand Flea", maybe the small boat should be the "Rock Fly". Please submit my suggestion to Second Mate Molly for her consideration. I seem to recall she was the chairgirl (?) of the naming committee.
