Building a Covered Manger Feeder for Small Livestock & Wildlife

When a wildfire destroyed most of the pine trees on Red Moose Ranch in 2015, it also took with it a small manger we used to feed the mule deer in the winter. In this episode, I FINALLY build a new, covered manger from scratch.
As always, I use as much repurposed and re-used material as possible. I'll take you through every step of the process, show you a bit of awesome winter mountain scenery along the way, and even top off this video with a hint of holiday music.

4:40 Having grown up on a farm (if you want to call what I am, "Grown up") you never throw anything away because "you might need it in 7 years.". Everything gets saved because you will eventually need it. That's why farms have so many and such big barns. You only really need about 2 of them, the rest are full of junk. I took that into my adult life as well. Not the volume so much as having duplicates of things and buying stuff in bulk when I could find it from free to cheap. My garage was an annex of Home Depot. I rarely ever had to leave home for hardware. I either had the exact thing or something I could make work quicker than the time it would take to go get whatever it was. Selling my house and RVing full time (with no home base) potentially could have been the most traumatic time of my life but farming makes you adaptable, so it wasn't.

10:43 We were building the dais at my church a few years ago and one of the guys was going into the trades. He'd tried a bunch of jobs after coming to the conclusion that delivering alcohol didn't quite blend with his life as a Christian. He went through a lot of jobs (he's not a conceptual thinker}. So when one of the guys put a level on the next box to form the dias, the right side was high. He says, "We'll have to dig down to level it." The guy with the level looked at me with shocked bemusement. The idea of shimming all the boxes on the left never occurred to him and digging out the concrete slab was his first thought. Don't get me wrong, you can teach this guy stuff and he'll do it competently, but he doesn't have the ability to extrapolate variables that he's never encountered or been shown.

Houston here. This is a very appropriate video for this time of year. I like that you are showing a small project. It's pretty awesome that you are putting out a feeder for the deer, albeit to help keep them from nibbling on the baby pine trees. I'm starting a small 4' x 8' storage shed build in my backyard tomorrow, which will eventually lead to an adjacent raised deck between the shed and the back concrete patio. Hopefully, many nice family nights will be spent grilling and hanging out on the back patio and deck, with a place to store my yard equipment right next to it.
