Life on the Moose

Six months ago I featured the off grid Spur Cabin in a start to finish timelapse video that was heavy on ambiance and inspiration, and light on details and information. I told you this video was in the works...so here it is!
This deep dive video contains all of the details of building a cabin in the middle of nowhere, how much it cost me, and my rationale for the methods and materials I used...all back-dropped with GORGEOUS mountain scenery.
So, sit back and relax OR...grab a notebook and a pen. There's a LOT of information AND inspiration to be had in this fast-paced video.
What's YOUR favorite part of the build?
Oh...and be sure to subscribe, so you never miss what's coming next.
Thanks for watching @LifeontheMoose! You are appreciated.

I'm on an ADHD rabbit hole binge watching of cabin builds for the future cabin I'm going to build on the land I don't currently own. Things I learned: pay attention to codes because building a deck not attached can save you square footage; prevent damage from burning tumbleweed; I need a saw mill and had no idea I could just own one. :).

@@LifeontheMoose, how does a deck count towards sqft? I thought sqft'age was "heated living space'"?
@nickw4898
@nickw4898 25 күн бұрын
@@denvernow7294 unfortunately typically the general laws say "finished living areas" not necessarily heated, an attached porch outside for some local laws counts because they dont differentiate between enclosed and open porch if its attached to the actual living area itself, hence free-floating deck.

@@LifeontheMoose yes, thank you for taking the time to put this in a summarized video of the whole build. You definitely put in some major work on everything. It's so refreshing to see a man be the man...we need more strong men like you and my husband. He's an amazing talented mechanic. Not great with wood but he tries. We're actually putting a down payment on some acres in a week or 2. So excited to see what we can do at 55 and no money 😅😂 God is good though so I'm sure we'll me more than able as long as we keep Lord Jesus in the front. God bless you sir and your family

In New Zealand, there is a similar maxim to your, "It'll be fine," and that is, "She'll be right," (Mate), with similar syntax, intonation and purpose, being basically, "You're only recent to thinking on this topic, I been doin' it for a while." To be a critic it is most necessary to have a comfy chair, in a warm restful spot with little distraction and to only emerge briefly from a light doze to make pronouncements before returning to rest. Thanks very much for the postings. Compliments of the season from Down-under and Happy & prosperous New Year.

I enjoyed this, after watching all of the original videos you did a great mob editing it all together. Having been building on my own on my property ( I am about 20 miles as the crow flies on the Canadian side, about a 1000 meters higher), it is nice to watch other people do the same kind of thing and see what tricks they come up with that gives the illusion of extra hands. We are currently doing a second home on our property and due to some health issues I am having to hire out a lot of the heavy work. It is not easy to do, letting someone else work on the property after having done most of it myself for over 30 years. I will do most of the finish work, using materials I have been gathering for the last thirty years. I have been milling fir and ponderosa pine and using it where the law allows. We are not allowed to use Ponderosa pine for structural purposes here so I use for finish work like you did. Thanks for sharing, I look forward to seeing what is coming next.

My husband and I love spending Friday evenings with you, Patrick. We've taken to grinning and saying "it'll be fine"to each other, as we're dabbling in planning our anticipated retirement, with plans kind of similar to what you've achieved so lovingly on Red Moose Ranch. Question for you, with the hopes you might consider an episode on this topic: you've mentioned a number of times that you occasionally purchase materials through auction, or other creative options. Can you make suggestions on how to find these alternative ways to source materials? I love the idea of repurposing lumber, like you did from the old cabin, both to reduce waste, and for the aesthetics.... Another topic we know very little about is purchasing undeveloped land. We've purchased houses, but recognize that undeveloped land is a very different beast. We so appreciate your humor, approach to projects, and your tenacity. Happy New Year to you and yours!

Really enjoyed it brought back so,many memories of my build. We are preparing to start another on. 35 years later! This time we plan to use hardware cloth on entire foundation and attic as rodent protection. We spend a great deal of time cleaning out mouse poop from everywhere. They chew into our cabin and gain entry. We have tried everything to stop, suppress them and we admit defeat . Prevention is our new thing. Now we must keep every item that can be chewed in hardware cloth lined boxes and this is working but what a pain! The smells have become overwhelming so we lost our joy of going to the cabin. Eastern North Carolina in the middle of wildlife refuge. Oh the finished wood darkens overnthe years but the unfinished stays light, but u may know that.

Man I feel like you did an amazing build, I saw a few things I was concerned about, but everything was addressed. My only concern is your breathing of the roof. I understand you have no humidity. My experience is southern Texas and South Florida. So, please forgive that concern....Rock on

I'm Ontario last year I built a 12 *24 cabin. The exterior is 60% complete and will get back at it in the spring. I like the 3 foot metal exterior and plan to finish some of it with Black metal and board and Batton . Thanks for the video.

I’m so impressed!!! My dad built a double calet house in the early 80’s all by himself also even the electric and plumbing. So I know the work that goes into it and there’s something to be said for the quality also !!! Your cabin reminds me of that time only on a much smaller scale but man would I love to ride horses on that beautiful property!!! Thanks for showing me how’s it done !!!!
