Building a DIY Basement for my OFF GRID LOG CABIN in the WILDERNESS | Aggressive Bear Visits

I'm building a wood foundation with a three room basement for cold storage and off-grid utilities using charred wood wood preservation (shou sugi ban). I install a sand point well in the greenhouse to provide drinking and irrigation water.
To escape the heat and the bugs, we spend time on my favourite lake.
A black bear visited us during the day and got aggressive with my wife, daughter, dog and me so I had to make the difficult decision to harvest it for food before it hurt someone. I cook it in a cast iron crock pot over an open fire while working on the log cabin on the new homestead.

Beautiful place you live in, unbelievable. Thank you so much for sharing it with us. The time and effort you had to put into building the basement all by your self. The size of the beams you drug in, the charring, the heavy walls. Hard to believe all you accomplish alone. I'm watching this on Saturday evening. My back is aching, I have been building a chicken coop using boards I have had covered and stored from other projects since 2019. Blessing that I have them with the price of wood. The coop is so over built but I had to use what I had. I have 4 lower vertebrae fused and 2- 9 inch rods along my spine. I was an RN but all the many years of abuse lifting and moving patients and equipment finally took their tole in 2015, I turned 68 this year. I do what I can but I see what you accomplish and I am so proud of you as I know your wife and children are. Happy Fathers day Shawn my friend and blessings to you and your family.

I remember stumbling onto this channel shortly after the pandemic started. The episode was Alone With My Dog In an Ice storm. I watched for a few minutes and listening to the silence and thought to myself this doesn't seem very interesting...Just this guy building stuff silently with his dog. I watched a few more minutes and then my inner voice told me to keep watching, so I did. To date I have gone back and watched every video Shawn has done and some of them 3 times. I now count the days for the new videos, short or long I watch them with much enjoyment. I think I speak for a lot of people when I say this guy is a gift and these videos heal the soul and I feel I am a better person from them. I can not imagine how one man can accomplish all you have in the time in a day. Canadian days have 24 hours as the US? Right? I watch and marvel at the things you do. No power tools, etc. Just to get one log from tree to cabin are hours. Your work is outstanding. I come from a family of builders and always had an interest. Too late in my life to start any building but I enjoy just watching you. With your talents it is wonderful your life was at a point you can use your talents. I watch your cooking. It's very interesting to see the plans and the progress that you make from one video to the next! I know that Cali gets a lot of "fan mail" and I'm a big fan of her myself! The thing I love most about Cali is that almost no matter what she's doing, her tail is wagging. She's a happy soul and she often steals the show with her wanderings and her playfulness as you toil with your project in the videos. I do wonder though if in her wanderings she has ever been threatened by an angry bear or a wolf pack or a venomous serpent? There are some awful videos on KZbin of wolves attacking domestic dogs. I assume Cali is spayed so that she doesn't attract trouble with her scent. When she suffered recently from heat stroke, my first thought was that she was bitten by something venomous! So glad that you correctly identified and rectified the problem! I love to watch sweet, playful Cali!

All I could think of is Sam Elliot saying, "Sometime you ear the Bear, and sometimes the bear, he eats you" A fun and useful idea, is to put down flat rocks on your most common routes and sow as many different kinds of thyme around them. It will keep the pests down on your paths, when you walk on it it smells great, and the stuff that goes out the sides you can pick, if you are feeling bold ;) Love following the journey as always, thanks for sharing.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... this is the best channel I have ever seen. I live in rural Minnesota. My family has been blessed by finding a beatiful little 35 acres between two lakes with fish, waterfowl, deer, turkeys, maples that have produced delicious syrup, oaks and so much more. I bought a canvas tent and did some winter camping (even during the polar vortex) this year. We can't afford it yet, but hopefully in the near future we will be able to build a small, rustic, off-grid cabin in the woods close to the lakes. We have apple trees and want to do a garden eventually, and wildlife food plots too. It's been a ton of work, but I've never done anything that feels more rewarding. We plan on planting at least a few hundred more trees to improve the habitat even further. Your videos have inspired so many ideas that I have shared with my family and I have to give you a lot of the credit, Shawn. We have always been an avid outdoor sports family, but with me and my brothers all growing our own families I have become even more driven to create something even a little similar to what you have done. I can't wait to watch this new homestead continue to grow and inspire. Also, your videos bring me peace I sometimes need after working in this crazy world we live in now. I work with incredible men and women in law enforcement and many of us cannot handle watching the lies and false narratives on tv anymore. Thank you for giving us something beatiful to watch when so much of our time is spent in some of the ugliest parts of this world. No politics, no crime, no riots, just a beatiful view into a beatiful life. You are an amazing artist in so many different ways! Thank you for sharing this with us.
