I wanted to challenge myself to see if I could make a full table's worth of cohesive, thematic ruined cathedral terrain with ONE box of the Eternal Cathedral from Archon Studios (and also recyling my giant mega cathedral for parts). Check out the video to see how I did.
If you want to see more shots and videos of the finished parts, hop over to my instagram page, where I'll be sharing lots more images and videos of the finished parts:

I did something very similar to this recently. After moving house, I realised that about 1/5th of the entire effort of moving was due to big, heavy, fragile terrain pieces. Mostly in the form of elaborate Armies on Parade boards that were next to useless for gameplay but I was too reluctant to get rid of. Ended up spending a weekend extracting GW terrain kits, expensive tufts, and interesting scratch-built terrain elements off these boards and turning them into playable pieces of modular terrain for an entire 6'x4' board. I was shocked how much playable terrain I was able to get out of unplayable display terrain, much like your work here. It was very satisfying and I recommend it to anyone else who's too reluctant to destroy their AoP boards!

"And so, what is your progress, Captain?" "Sir, we had to burn the village in order to save it". I agree with others that the disassembly was a bit heartbreaking - but totally worth it! Usable terrain is 100% better than static bits you cant actually engage with. Cheers!

There are ways to make injection molds where the parts "demold" without being connected to the runners, what most people call spures. These are methods can be more expensive both for the mold and the actual molding (more technical).

Not sure if it'd work under a battle mat, but building on a piece of sheet metal allows magnets to hold up narrow free-standing features (e.g. a straight wall without a supporting L in it). Used to do that when I made 1 : 24 scale floor-plan models for visualization (bare-bones stuff, nothing like your beautiful creations!). Now I just 3D print 1 : 100 scale models with everything fixed in place.

@KnarbMakes 2 жыл бұрын
Its tamiya extra thin mixed with some HIPS sprues to make it a bit thicker. Apaprently plumbing glue, abs or pvc cement might work as well. Even though the parts are not abs, they still seem to react to acetone based glues. Again im not a chemist, just tested stuff in practice.

I like your projects, but lot of time I find they lack in small details. Meanwhile Plastic kits have far too mush details everywhere, so busy! It's like in video game when they make super detailed 3d models/environments just because they can but forget to make something nice to see & play with. I find it look better to alternate simple shapes with more detailed key parts. Some of the terrain pieces could get more printed/mdf pieces to create medium level of details and bridge the gap between crafted & plastic pieces.
@KnarbMakes
@KnarbMakes 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I struggle with it constantly. Finding the right place to add the right amount of detail is difficult. I did add lots more details to the interior of the church itself with the new columns and plaques, and the added rubble in the aisles really does help.
