I was lucky enough to have been raised in a neighborhood,with many gearhead fathers of my friends! Usually some kind of race work involved! At about 16 yrs old, I built my 1st 450-500 hp Chevy 350( roller rockers,etc.) To this day, I treat your approach to how to work on any engine,in these manners!... now I get dead cars running for my friends,usually for free( because it's usually something really stupid) if I have to crawl under someone else's car... I walk away!.. it's been 50years,of gearhead- ism for me! European,American,and motorcycle's worldwide,logging equipment,diesel,etc.,etc.!.. now it's all computer chips that run everything?/ been driving a jag. For the past 14 yrs. With sensors everywhere!... it's kinda funny that it took about 15-20 years for this world to build cars like jaguars,with all that electrical stuff! And to think my motor madness started when I was 9 years old,when a man said to me : do you want me to make your 3 1/2 hp mini bike to go faster? I said yea! Sooo he put a stiff paperclip on the throttle bar,and governor lever( eliminating the governor) ...what genius!!!!!..."Aloha,from Hawaii....loved the video!"

As a master tech/engine builder I always enjoy watching others building engines- I'm always reminded you can always learn. Good job. One small point of contention- cylinder head removal- ideally you're going to remove the bolts in the opposite order of installation. Same goes for camshaft removal. Camshaft removal/installation will vary from engine to engine but it often more of a 4/2/3/1/5 (bearing cap numbers) and done in several passes. You don't want large sections unsupported while bearing spring load. There's generally a near neutral position for each cam which will keep the least total valve lift across the camshaft, and in this case you'd do this with the pistons all at half travel.

Not sure if anyone else mentioned mentioned as there's 374 comments, but don't install the circlip gap where the notch in the piston is. That notch is there to pop the clip back out. The way you did it, it'll be a PITA to remove it. Best to place the circlip gap in the 6 o'clock position. That'll allow you to get a pick or small screwdriver behind the clip at that notch to pry it up out of the piston. Otherwise great job at showing this process! I watched it as it popped up on my feed and there's a lot of similarities to the design of these year engines and the same years of Saturn 1.9 DOHC engines. Only wish we had the support the Miata's had back then. That engine should be a ripper, rock on!

This video kinda gave me a feeling that it’s not a rocket science like I imagined before. For over 20 years, I pretty much only owned Audis (and a few Volvos)… But had always been interested in Miatas. A couple years ago I finally gave in and bought a one-owner, low-mileage NA. Don’t get me wrong - living in the snow belt, if I had to rely on just one car for 12 months of the year, I’d be entirely satisfied driving around in a quattro-equipped Audi with either a manual transmission or a dual-clutch. But I’d be lying if I said the Audi could provide me any of the experiences and sensations that a Miata could. RWD, naturally-aspirated, light weight, manual transmission, a quick and simple droptop mechanism, and all of this for less than $5k = why did I wait so long to do this??!!? There are few driving experiences more thoroughly enjoyable than a Sunday morning drive in the springtime, top down, through the mountains and along some cliff-side curvaceous routes not far from where I live in the northeast. If you’re currently fence-sitting and can’t decide whether to explore the possibilities of life as an MX-5 owner… Life is too short to waste time trying to make simple decisions.. Especially when you know already know “The Answer.”

Good Job 👍🏼 enjoyed watching this video on the build !!! I share your passion for building engines it’s something I grew up around and have done since a teen. I have a tip that maybe useful to you when removing and installing the valve springs take a socket or something that will fit in the combustion chamber of the head to hold the valves closed and then before installing your valve spring removal tool lightly tap the retainer just a bit and that will help the keepers come loose and prevent the valve from tryin to open when using your tool which is also handy when installing valve springs and keepers during assembly.Nothing against the way you do it just thought I’d share a technique I’ve used and was showed years and years ago.
@NappMotorsports Жыл бұрын

@RiqueRacing Жыл бұрын
A quick way I learnt how to remove the valve retainers and keepers is to get a 14mm long socket, a piece of cloth or paper, and a rubber mallet. Put the piece of cloth in the socket, then place it over the retainer. Take the rubber mallet and give it a quick blow. The paper/cloth is used to catch the keepers when they fly out and prevent them from going through the hole in the socket.

Many thanks for the vid! Could I please offer just one extra hint, learnt through painful experience? Clean out the OIL GALLEYS in the CRANK!!! Get the machine shop to remove the ball bearings, thoroughly clean the oil galleys that run inside the crank, and replace the ball bearings with grub screws. Otherwise, as soon as your beautiful new engine gets up to temp and builds oil pressure, 20-year-old oily gunk will get flushed out of the crank, and straight into your brand new ACL bearings!! Ask me how I know - I built an almost identical engine, and when it was dynoed, the crank gunk came out, and spun every single bearing. For a small extra cost, it is just good insurance. Cheers :)

A note on something you've missed. The cam caps need a THIN layer of sealant underneath them, as they are a metal on metal high pressure sealing surface. This is especially important on the bp-z3 motor. Every cam journal has a restricted oil pressure, other than intake journal #1, which supplies the vvt. Because the front journal of the intake cam receives full oil pressure, it is the most likely to leak from under the cam cap. This might lead someone that is unaware to replace the cam seal and valve cover gasket 3 times without fixing their mysterious leak... please don't ask how I know.

@NappMotorsports I hadn't heard of it either, but I was getting a mysterious and frustratingly persistent leak from that area. Popped the cam caps off and sure enough, there's oil(both wet and baked) under the sealing surface. Seems many people on the forums don't do it and have never had a problem, but some, like mine, leak. I'd say it's most likely due to imperfections in the surface, but it's hard to know. After talking to my machinist and some of my friends in the spec miata World, it seems a thin layer of silicone sealant is in order.

I can see the bottom part of the engine is solid and robust, thick metal and large bearings. No wonder my 1.6 Miata I owned went over 350k without any issue.

Absolutely brilliant. It looks super fun to actually take apart and maybe upgrade an engine. Even though i will probably start with a motorcycle as they are cheaper and easier to acces this video really gave me the lust to actaully get going. Keep it up m8!

When you put the front cam caps you can also put the cam seals at the same time then torque them so you don't need the cam seal tool

Doesn’t guarantee they’re at the right depth though.

When loosening camshaft, crank, intake/exhaust manifolds, and headbolts pretty much anything that has to be flat, always loosen from outside bolts-in. Then when tightening, thighten inside outward. Otherwise Great Video!!!
