Beautiful. You can make hula hoops covered in window screen. They float nicely. Put in water hyacinths and water lettuce. The plants thrive keeping the pond clear, give the fish cover from underneath the hoops. Can also use any kind of floating materials if you want smaller sized hoops.
@kimuseni3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip. I think I will try that this Spring. That’s a good idea with the screen to prevent the koi from eating the plants.
@vongeisen3 жыл бұрын
@@kimuseni they still nibble at the roots but aren’t able to devour the greenery in 10 minutes. Also keeps the algae away, and keeps the pond shaded in the hot summer months. I thought I had a unique idea, found out lots of people make all finds of stuff all with the same principle. Always buy the softer screening. They will last a couple of years. Bull frogs love to hangout in the foliage. Best of luck.

It’s so relaxing to have a pond. You should start soon. It doesn’t have to be expensive and extravagance. You can start with a simple set up. I don’t have expensive system. It’s a poor man’s DIY system.

there were lots of planning mistakes there, but its like you say, learning as we go along. Let me just name some so other can learn as well. The ground slab is a must becasue its takes the full weight of water and you dont want the ground to sink in. Use rebar or a welded wire mesh to make it consolidate better and not cracking under load, a bottom drain would be essential to keep the bottom clean and the flooor should be slanted to the drain. The sides would be much cheaper and better plummed with concrete blocks and since its a in ground pond you dont need rebar or to fill the blocks with concrete as the dirt around it will hold it in place. By using those 2 wood boxes you were unable to keep the walls straight due tot he weight of the concrete. I was surprised the ground slab didn't raise due to the side loads from the wallls being poured. Like you mentioned it is a learning curve and as long as it meets its purpose then its mission accomplished. The next one you make will be better and more efficient for sure. good job
@fasousa47987 жыл бұрын
I didnt seee that. I apologise. The best liner you can get is fiberglass. I recommend you take a look at Matts work on GRPliningservices here on YT. That thing virtually lasts a lifetime if not more and its water proof. Paints usually crack and peel and its a waste of money and time. The trick with FG is to render the walls as smooth as possible, no sharp corners and without waterproofing additives so the resin can be absorbed by the concrete. the finish after the quill, finish layer and flowcoat will be plastic smooth. Look at the videos and take your own conclusions. It should be applied by somene with some experience with composite materials
@fasousa47987 жыл бұрын
You might use Hyacinths and other pond plants as a good nitrate controller as opposite to UV light. Try it and if its not enough go with the UV. The koi like to nibble on the plants though so a lettuce and every so often will make them happy

Nice video! My grandparents had a fish pond about that size in their back yard. They had very large white and orange fish. Not sure if they were Koi or not. Why are you using a liner if you have used concrete on the entire thing? We used to have a liner, but we decided to fill it with concrete instead, I think that it is leaking somewhere, but I am not sure since it the water level stays at 2 feet and wont fill all the way to 3.....
@kimuseni6 жыл бұрын
we are not sure what to seal the concrte yet to make it waterproof
@d3admous36 жыл бұрын
kimuseni we actually filled it afterwards with nice tiles and used a rubberized paint called quick seal
@kimuseni6 жыл бұрын
themagiclotus wow. Is it holding up ok? No leaks? Do you think I can use the same rubberized paint where I live. I live in Chicago Illinois and we have hard winter here with below zero degrees in the winter. So you have videos of your pond? I would like to see it.
@lukeholmberg48545 жыл бұрын
The problem with concrete is that it will raise the ph and possibly harm the fish it not counteracted with chemicals such as balancing additives.

Why the pond liner? Wouldn’t the concrete had have adequate?
@kimuseni6 жыл бұрын
Duane Dibbley the concrete itself would not be adequate. At the time, I could not find any waterproofing or sealant for the concrete that I felt comfortable with. A really good option would be to apply fiberglass but it would have been really expensive. Plus I don’t know how the concrete would hold up during freezing and thawing during our winters and summers.
