So sad that a majority of this country is decades behind other parts of the world when it comes to public transportation, both over long and short distances. I spent nearly a month in Germany and didn't need to rent a car or any other mode of personal transportation.

Absolutely incredible! And the drop-point being Disney Springs means there's no need for entry-cost. You can just get your shop-on if that's all you're interested in doing. Good move I say, However. The replacement of Disney-Express would still need a way to get guests to their "check-in' destinations, and their luggage. I hope that Disney intends to do internally.

@@Batsquatch98 Blame Amtrak. They have lobbyists that have IMMENSE power in Washington and have managed to block private rail on every single front. They've been a huge block towards us having a nationwide bullet train, claiming their crappy Acela is a "high speed rail." Their ridiculous explanation? Their lawyers said "The nation's infrastructure is not suitable for "ULTRA" high speed rail. WTF is that?! They refused to even explain at a hearing but because of so much political corruption, nobody raised any questions and they were allowed to keep all their networks while private bullet train companies were denied entry into the market! This is why I despise Amtrak and will NEVER use them. They are so awful that one of their Acela routes saved barely 30 minutes over taking a plane the same way!

Here in Pennsylvania it’s become cheaper to take the train from Pittsburgh to Harrisburg/Philadelphia than it is to take the Turnpike (which is now one of the most expensive toll roads in the world). I can’t imagine requiring Amtrak to reimburse the Turnpike Commission for lost toll revenue.

@robmar1970
@robmar1970 3 жыл бұрын
These new toll roads are many times through a Private/Public partnership. Part of those deals is that when the roads finally open, the Private portion of that partnership would get a percentage of toll revenue over a certain amount of years as a return on that investment. Additionally, there are also bonds issued and loans taken out by government entities to finance these projects. Future toll revenue plays a large role in determining the financing of such projects so that is most likely the concern here about potential toll road revenue loss. The government needs to pay back these investors and loans so if there is a loss of toll revenue then it would mean that they need to offset those losses by other means. Which could mean the tax base footing that bill.
@Mike__B
@Mike__B 3 жыл бұрын
@@Shundi879 Yup, lets try and get less cars off the road because it's better for the environment... "But you better not touch our income revenue!" I see the same thing in San Francisco all the time, this war the local transit authority has against automobiles, not wanting them anywhere... but the #1 source of revenue for the city comes from automobiles often in the form of parking, and more to the point parking enforcement (tickets).

Exactly! This is a privately owned company and the state of Florida is holding them hostage to make sure they get their cut of the profits (because that's easier than the state building a railroad). Does the state of Florida also hold all the bus lines hostage that run back and forward to the cruise docks (I wouldn't be surprised since they replace hundreds of cars per week) or do they just charge buses a hell of a lot more money for the tolls? (basically the same thing) The idea of the toll road is that those that USE IT pay for it. I understand that the state of Florida has to pay back investors for building those toll roads, but they shouldn't be allowed to strong arm a company that is building a better system to make it easier for some to travel around the state. Over time the state of Florida will derive more income from the normal operation of the rail system than their toll blackmailing will provide and will give them a better relationship with a company that can provide that income with the possibility of expanding to north Florida in the future. (something they're not likely to do if the state tries to grab as much of the rail profits as they can)

This is an excellent explanation of the dynamics of Brightline and the repercussions of Disney abandoning their free bus service. Brayden, you have a lucid understanding of the complexities of these transportation modes and have clearly presented them in your video. As a resident of West Palm Beach and a regular Brightline rider I can assure you they are a first class operation. The trains, stations and service are of the highest order. @@tommytube268 So first off, the whole Virgin fiasco. Second, that the line is the most fatal in the US. Third, that they’re failing financially. Fourth, that the money they pay to the throughway authority is simply for the land they’re using and not for a toll offset. Finally, that the majority of the railroad’s construction has been because of state and county infrastructure investments. Those major points would be good to mention, as well as prices on the existing line being much higher than advertised.

@@afcgeo882 Lets take a look into that then. Virgin Group invests in so many different thing that they probably decided it wasnt valuable for them anymore focusing on Galactic instead. Secondly since Brightline is new they are going to be more "dangerous" than companies who have operated for decades without many accidents. Third, many companies struggle financially in the first few years of business, thats just how it is. Some do better than others and some take a while to make money like Uber and Lyft. You are correct with you fourth point though.

My thoughts on Disney discontinuing the ME is that they want you to rent a car. Then you have to pay for the parking fee at the resorts. Win, win for Disney. You're still paying for the ME since the cost is built into the resort room, which as you said Brayden, the cost of the resort rooms is not going down.

My 2 cents: Disney should exert some of its considerable influence and financing to make this project a reality. For me, it's not a vacation if I have to drive. The main thing that's kept me vacationing at WDW over the last 20 years, in spite of living a 6 hour drive from Anaheim, has been the pleasure of knowing I don't have to deal with routes and traffic and gas stations.

I have a friend who works for WDW Transportation in management, she told me that WDW had to cancel the deal with MEARS for the Magical Express due to 2 factors: 1.) The Airport wanted a multi-million dollar increase for the lease of the loading/unloading area. 2.) Mears wanted a 20 year contract renewal for nearly 5 times the current price. Disney knew this decision would upset people tremendously but they were backed into a corner without any choice given the reduced park admission during COVID times.

Biggest issue with the bright line from the airport is that you’ll have to then change at springs (or wherever the station will be located) to another means of transport to get to your hotel and not only is that more money but it’s more hassle especially if you’ve got a few bags or if you’ve travelled for a fair amount on a plane already

I stayed off site at a hotel that had a courtesy bus to Disney World's transportation center where you board the appropriate monorail to your ultimate destination (Epcot, Magic Kingdom, etc.). I drove to the hotel as I didn't want to go off to other attractions. Do research before you finalize vacation plans and stick with the plan. Don't forget to tip your courtesy drivers! Have a relaxing vacation and enjoy the magic (and make some happen if you have the chance). If you elect to stay off site, look for places that have shuttle service between the airport and hotel. Account for additional travel time to WDW from your hotel and make sure their shuttle schedule meets your needs, again, before you book. Vacation planning and doing it are stressful enough, but making the effort to not 'wing it' can go a long way to ensuring a successful, memorable vacation experience.

Totally! If you didn’t have to worry about bags it would be a great stop for a bite to eat before hotel check in, but families who have been flying all day will definitely not enjoy lugging bags around springs to find their bus. I can just picture all the cranky families now 😬 I think most will end up doing a car (either rental or Lyft, etc).

I didn’t even have to go to my room right away- I could check into the hotel and go do what I wanted knowing that my bag would be in my room when I got there later on. Now I will have to collect my bag, get on a second peoplemover, take it to the train station, get on a train to Disney Springs, get my bag on to a third form of transit to my actual Disney hotel, check in with my bag at that time, then go do something. Not only will all these transfers substantially slow down my first and last day, but I’m going to have to haul luggage all over Central Florida.

beyond stupid - i cant even believe they are considering this - i wouldnt take the brightline if given the option of the Disney Magical Express. Why isnt Tesla making a fleet of electric busses for Disney yet? Or is that already happening? There was, very briefly, an operational air field at WDW. For a small extra fare, guests flew a short hop from MCO to Disney. If Walt had lived to see WDW open, I'm quite sure the field would have expanded to become a full fledged airport, with direct flights. No need for Magical Express when the customers are flying right into the magic. After all, MCO only became a major hub because of Disney, Orlando the city only became a (somewhat) large city for the same reason. Walt wanted complete control of his environment, but the men who came after him just didn't think on that scale.

You know how our city is. Walkable places are few and far between (Bell Tower, downtown, Linear Park, and Lakes Park.) Even the new Midtown they're planning to build promises to be - and I quote - "more friendly to cars" (likely due to boomers complaining about the narrow streets of downtown.) Perhaps the new mayor could change these plans, but it doesn't seem likely. Brightline will only be successful in the short term due to it being a shuttle to the tourist hub of Orlando. All our Floridian cities will need to be rebuilt to be more transit friendly (bikes, buses, light rail, etc.) in the coming decades for it to last and to be a true inter-city network, and Fort Myers seems like the place that's least likely to make that transformation. Also, we do not have existing infrastructure here for a train to run on, unlike Miami - Fort Lauderdale. Makes building an extension hard to justify economically. But who knows? Maybe Beijing Biden will stick to his claim that he loves trains and give Brightline the money they need for a stop in every county in Florida.

Seeing this potential for a train that connects them all is exciting for me. Even though it will be years before it’s in operation, I’m already dreaming about riding that train when I head down there for visits to escape the wintry north. So glad I stumbled upon this video 😁

This feels like good and bad news. I'm happy for Brightline, but feel a little down that Disney is getting rid of the Magical Express. It's the only way I've ever traveled to and from the resort to the airport. We shall see how this goes I suppose. I'll probably be one of the first to find out since I'll be going Dec. 26 - Jan 2.

I think it should be first extended from its downtown Tampa station to also the city’s airport and stadium. If you used existing bridges, you’d have to to route through Clearwater to get to St. Petersburg from Tampa. That’s kinda an inconvenient and roundabout way of connecting the two, if you ask me.

@JasonSterlingRMC
@JasonSterlingRMC 3 жыл бұрын
@@afcgeo882 It's the same thing really. They want more money directed at the bottom line. They can either increase rates or cut service. Sometimes they can cut places like landscaping or other staff that might be missed, such as scrubbing the entry pad on the buses each night so they look brand new the next morning- not kidding, lol, that was an example of a cut to increase money to the bottom line that they were hoping no one would notice. As far as I know no one did. In other cases it's something like this, drop the free transport from the airport. Every room at a Disney owned resort is now making whatever the amount the service cost more per room used. While the guest is paying the same amount for the room PLUS whatever it now costs them from the airport, should they fly of course. If they drive themselves then that cost was already added to the resorts a few years ago when there was a charge added for parking your car at your resort.

I don’t see the train being a good alternative to the magical express. You would need to run multiple dedicated trains per hour to keep up with the volume (they currently only run 1 train per hour from Miami). Then… you get to Disney Springs and I’d assume transfer to a resort bus? But those are not configured for luggage. I’m thinking people either use Mears Connect or hire an Uber. Rental cars are expensive in Orlando, and you have to pay to park everyday at the theme parks. I don’t think it’s a huge deal that disney is getting rid of the free option…… I’ve never been anywhere that has free airport shuttles to a resort

@banksrail
@banksrail 3 жыл бұрын
Actually, they currently aren’t running any services due to the pandemic. But it’s typically 2 trains per hour. 1 every 30 minutes in both directions. Also Brightline has ordered more rolling stock so that they can increase the length of the trains to 7 cars instead of 5. That being said, Brightline is certainly prepared for the extra volume of people.

I remember having to pay mears before magical express came into existence it wasn’t too bad I do remember for a while when magical express started a lot of the other companies that handle transportation were pretty upset that they lost revenue I guess they will be happy now the cab drivers the Uber drivers the rental car companies all profit from this. In California they have a bus similar to magical express but they charge for that it’s a private company that runs it it’s not too bad either considering LA traffic

How about luggage? I figure it won't be difficult to carry your luggage on the train from Orlando Airport to Disney Springs, but then you still have to take the Disney Bus System to your Disney Hotel. If I'm not mistaken the current on property buses don't have luggage space. Maybe there will be a bag drop (for a fee of course) at the airport and your luggage will be delivered to your room. What would also be nice is that when you fly back home you could already check-in for your flight at the Disney Springs Station. In the end if I have to pay anyway for the train or a Mears bus, I think I would choose the convenience of the bus that drops me in front of my hotel.

B - this has to be, hands down, your greatest video ever. People from documentary companies should be grabbing you up. Just utterly fantastic. As for “toll compensation” what a crazy notion, regardless of passenger count in the rail system, the number of cars on that road will only increase. Florida should be paying brightline hand over fist to save them from themselves. Guests increasingly face dangerous road conditions and larger waits, a situation which people think about when planning return trips. If Walt could do it again, and knew the future, I am sure there would be a monorail in place already.

Flights into MCO, with a connection to the cruise terminals of Miami, Tampa and Port Canaveral via rail, is going to be ideal for me personally. Normally we spend a few days in and around I-Drive and then drive to one of the cruise ports, but this is normally a hassle with tolls, parking cost at the port or having to arrange a drop off at the port and another car rental to get us back to MCO. With regards to the Magical Express, I know it was included in your hotel rate, but given the extortionate cost of Disney Resorts I can’t see why this would be a deal breaker for those willing to fork out premium hotel rates for standard rooms.
