That is a nice looking bed and camp setup and you must love it so much. I would love it too and be so satisfied with the progress made. You need to cut the tops of the upper poles so they are equal and place a tarp over it and tie it down so the wind won't blow it off.

Nice video.By experience,no need to baton ur good knife on small sticks.you could cut it off without damaging your knife.Batoning is for extreme cases ,where you don't have an axe.Good video.im not the kind of person who find faults,but if we do it right we survive longer,with tools in good condition.
@bluesGs8 жыл бұрын
+bukhut Ray Thanks ! Don't worry I do have quite a few axes :) I like to batton my knives to see (and show) how tough they really are. Obviously It's better to use the proper tool for the job but It's nice to know if you can trust the blade just in case. What I did in the video wasn't even near to be an abusive test for this knife, it's a really really strong and durable knife. Thanks for watching.

In the beginning you said bark from a birch. Not to be annoying or frustrating by any means, but what you want is a white paper birch, preferably still alive, but mature. It's the oils in the paper bark that are highly combustible. Any dry, rotted wood makes fine tinder after about 5 or so minutes of shaving and tearing...
@bluesGs10 жыл бұрын
Hi Sitric :) I get what you mean, but just by scrapping the bark of a birch that was dead on the ground and rotten inside I got a fire going pretty easily. Dry punk wood is indeed a good fire tinder but beleive me, tha branch was very very wet inside. I just wanted to show that birch bark is good to go even when found on the ground, Thank you for watching and commenting. Have a nice day.

I like what you have done, but I would like to give a little constructive criticism, and even invite discussion that counters what I am seeing and saying. Your raised bed shelter has some minor flaws that can be easily fixed (I am assuming you had forest debris for the roof). Execution was excellent, but design needs work. Try lowering your bed and building a box filled with pine boughs for mass below your sleeping platform. The roof of the shelter shouldn't be so high that the steep angle of the roof wouldn't allow for you to get completely under it should it rain. Even unfinished it does not look like the finished structure will give you adequate shelter. If you were just going to use it as a frame for a tarp or canvas tent it would work just fine the way you have it if you can close up the tarp to keep you dry. The way it is set up now, debris for the roof would just slide off. If you were using a tarp backing, the angle to the fire would reflect the heat from the fire back out instead of down onto your sleep platform. Please feel free to point out to me where I am wrong. I used to work as a wilderness search and rescue specialist and now teach scouts wilderness survival skills. I would appreciate it if my flaws are pointed out to me! There is no room for hubris in survival situations. That all being said, damn good job on the structure. Given time, I can see splitting some lengths of logs and putting real over-lapped siding on that thing!
@bluesGs6 жыл бұрын
Hi that's the first video on this shelter. I've made two more after that modifying it. (check out awesome bushcraft day in my videos to see the '' final product ''. But if i had to make a new one i'd change a few things for sure.

Hi Stefan. It's a small fiskars saw. Try in gardening stores or on the internet. I guess they are on amazon or ebay, pretty cheap and very light. Have a nice day.
@stefanstroie10 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thank you for your reply. I will try on gardening stores. It is awsome I really like it. And I also love your camp. How it was to sleep in that shelter. Were yiu cold?
@bluesGs10 жыл бұрын
To be honest I've only tried once to sleep in it. It was pretty cold outside. I raised the fire pit to the same level as the bed so it'd be closer to me. Put a survival blanket next to the roof. And it was toasty warm :) Now I don't sleep in it because the spiders and other criters have taken it and claim it's their home :) (I even saw a bird's nest inside of the roof =) ) Have a nice day :)
@stefanstroie10 жыл бұрын

U should get a BK9 Knife IT THE BEST Bushcraft knife
@bluesGs8 жыл бұрын
+Richie Murphy Hi ! I've been thinking of getting a BK9 (or a junglas) but never pulled the trigger. I have a Terava Skrama for a big knife and like it but I usually take an axe and smaller knife for bushcraft. Maybe I'll get one someday though, it's a nice custom project. Have a nice day.
@charlesjames83688 жыл бұрын
Right to build the fire first. But second should always be get at least a nights worth of firewood. The fire alone can get you through even a cold night if you keep it going and lay close to it. Plenty of time to build the shelter with a full next day of daylight.
@bluesGs8 жыл бұрын
+Charles James That's what I would do too, in a survival situation, that raised bed was for a bushcraft camp, no stress involved. In a real survival time I would find a sheltered spot, maybe arrange a few branches to shed from the wind (5 min max), then Fire , firewood as you said. Have a nice day.

cutting down living saplings might be good if its really a question of survival. But, if its practice and thousands of people are doing it, then its NOT OK.
@bluesGs9 жыл бұрын
Jack Rainbow Sure. If you're home, I guess you can do what you whant, but in a public area I never cut green wood.
@jackrainbow5609 жыл бұрын
If we are talking about Surviving after economic/social collapse then the forests will be stripped as will the ruins of cities by the few million desperate survivors. If the situation is Lost or Air Crash etc, then cutting down living trees is a survival necessity. But if , in a small country like the UK, where it seems thousands of well fed folk are getting hip to survival fantasies, cutting down saplings in the few thin forests remaining ain't OK. I wonder if its possible to build an emergency shelter using only materials like fallen branches and leaves etc., binding with strips of nettle stalk and so on, using nothing but a knife to make everything needed. No polythene sheeting, no manufactured twine, no metal spark strikers, no smart manufactured tools, no manufactured flat pack wood-stove. To me, that would present a challenge.
@bluesGs9 жыл бұрын
That's a really big challenge, It's not impossible but it would take a looot of time to make one.
